Prologue

Reyna opened her eyes. She looked around, momentarily forgetting where she was. They moved around so often now that she was constantly forgetting where she was. She was in her little room in their tiny movable house. Still half asleep, she sat up, shaking her head, she remembered her dream. It flashed before her eyes, and she shuddered. She got out of bed, and rushed across the hall.

“ Emmerich, I had the same dream.” Her brother, twin, friend, and BFF, and in her world, the place where she would find the most comfort, slid out of bed. Even though he was her twin, she looked up to brother for comfort and warmth as if he were older. Emmerich had dark hair, pale skin, and liked to wear baggy clothes.

“It’s okay,” He said, placing his hand on her shoulder. ”Reyna, you have to tell me if it was the same dream or different. One small difference could change everything.”

“No, it wasn’t the same.” The dream was a scene that haunted her sleep three days a week. She had described the dream many times to Emmerich.

It shows a girl, about her age, with slightly curly hair smiling up at her. But after that happy scene, it dissolves into red. When the red clears, there are a bunch of cloaked people with medallions engraved with a different animal. They are circled around that same girl, but now she is tied to a tree. Reyna immediately tries to help her, but finds she can’t move. When she looks down, she is standing in a river. But when the water touches her, it turns into this thick, honey like gold liquid. She has a feeling what it is, but wakes up in a cold sweat when she’s about to find an answer. Still, as she wakes, she has an idea of what that is, and it is definitely not honey, edible yes, but not sweet. Something that is probably what shaped her future, and changed who she and her family lives, and is.

“Why do I have this dream?” Reyna wonders aloud to Emmerich.

“I don’t know, this could be anything, just a random occurrence, but I don’t why you’ve had it so many times, it’s a little disturbing.” Emmerich said softly, but his tone doesn’t fool Reyna. Her brother is confused, but also in a way trying to protect her.

“This isn’t helping anything, it doesn’t reveal anything, and it doesn’t seem to be related to all of us, only me.”
