‘The world as we know it has come to an end’ I wrote in my journal. ‘It’s Wednesday, March 25th, 2020. The outbreak started two days ago and I’ve been bashing zombies left and right. Nowhere is safe. Not anymore anyway.’ “Cleo!” Cleo is my German Shepard. She’s been by my side throughout this pandemic. She jumps up on my lap almost making me fall off the bench I was seated on. I decided we’d take a break on a bench beside a bus stop. Cleo barks at me intensely. “what is it, girl?” I ask Cleo closing my journal and placing it at the bottom of my dusty black school back. Cleo starts running and I follow carefully behind her. She runs in between buildings then stops at the end of the building closest to the big open street. Cleo and I peer out from the shadows to see a girl swarmed by zombies. Does it look like there are 10?! Wait maybe, OH SHIT NO THERE’S WAY MORE!! I run out of the shadows right away without thinking and Cleo barks at me. Half the zombies start to walk in my direction and I’m about to grab my bat out of my bag when I realized that it’s not here. “GOD FUCKING DAMMIT I LEFT IT ON THE BENCH” I yell. Well, old fashion it is then. I take out some black gloves from my bag instead and run towards the zombies. I start punching each one coming my way trying to slow them down and Cleo bites at the zombie’s legs. We make our way through the crowd to the girl. Most of the zombies that swarmed her were gone but three were left. She takes her stick through one’s head. Two left. Some of the zombies behind me started to get up. Hurry up. She slashes one’s head open. One left. All the zombie’s id fought were up and walking towards me again. The girl tries to stab the last one but dropped her and fell backwards. Oh, come on. The zombies were so close to me now they could catch me if I fell. I run-up to the girl with Cleo by my side. Cleo tears off the zombie’s right leg making him tumble to the ground. I help the girl up from behind and she turns around to look at me. “Who the hell are you?” she asks, crossing her arms. “No time for that, let’s go,” I say, beginning to run down the road. Cleo and the girl follow behind me and we turn the corner onto a quiet street. The girl turns to look at me scowling. “You know I had tha-″ she stops mid-sentence and grins at me. “Well hello there,” she says flipping her hair. “Who might you be?” she asks, tilting her head. “I’m Ian, Ian Park and you’re kinda freaking me out,” I say to the girl. “Brianna Taylor, and how so?” she asks, raising an eyebrow. “Well you were yelling at me a minute ago and now you’re all smug,” I say raising my shoulders. “Welp, it’s not every apocalyptic day that you meet a handsome stranger,” Brianna says taking a handbag out of the rim of her skirt. She takes out a mirror and moves it around. “Shit, now my hair’s a mess! She grumbles and closes the mirror. “Okay Drama queen, let’s find somewhere to rest,” I say, gesturing for her to follow behind me. Cleo, Brianna and I venture on the long cement road to our next destination.
