the Invitation
it hurts. my head. it really hurts. can he just shut up for a moment? no ofcourse he wont. because that monster lives to make her life hell. its still raining, the storm is vicious. the loud sound of thunder makes me jump. im so scared. mother is still sleeping beside me. “make the horses go faster papa!” Jonathan squeals. the lightning strikes lighting up the moonless night like bright day and the horses make an ear splitting neigh. And everything shatters.
Avi opened her eyes, drenched in sweat. ‘It was okay’, she told herself. She was safe now and no more an eight year old. It was all past and she had to move on. Almost every morning she would tell herself the same thing. It was still dark outside but the sun would rise soon. There was no point sleeping in. So she got off the bed.
Once she was ready, she picked her dagger from the table and hid it in her boots. It was her mother’s, Grandma had given her mother the dagger when she turned thirteen and her mother gave it to Avi when she first started to learn swords, she was six and could barely hold the dagger. She would tell mother that she would be the best warrior just like her. Thinking about it made her eyes fill with tears. She slapped herself in her face. Tears were for the weak. And she wasn’t weak.
She looked at her reflection and saw a girl with braided dark brown hair, bright eyes that phased from amber to red and then merged into black. When she looked herself in the eye, she saw that determined girl who would do anything to get her revenge. She pulled her hood on and went for her morning training.
“Morning sissy, breakfast time!” Nat called, entering the training area shamelessly. It was nine already, she didn’t even realize. It just felt so right when she trained. She could get her mind off everything. Just Avi and her target. No wonder she was ‘Aylin of Selena’ the moon halo of State of Selena.
“Take a break sissy or they’d start calling you a man.“, Nat teased. She ignored him and shot her arrow.
“Bull’s eye!” he exclaimed. “Oh come on now Avi, I am starving...” that baby monster. “Take a sword and enter the arena.” Of course I had to challenge this shameless idiot.
“We both know who’s going to win little sis, no need to show off.”
“Loser”
“Let’s ask Professor to take a geography quiz then.”
He knew I’d lose. I wonder how we were twins. Except our eyes nothing matched. Even our eyes were different; his were clear beautiful amber without the red. He looked beautiful, I looked scary. He liked to party and be with people, I liked to shut myself. He loved books, I loved swords. I mean I liked books too but just the nice ones...You know what I mean? Okay all books are nice, I am just not a fan of studying them, I like to read once and that’s it. I and Nat were two halves of one being with not a single similar trait. Maybe we looked a bit alike, or so the people say. I obviously don’t believe them.
So I just rolled my eyes at his comment and he smiled, proud of himself.
When we reached the dining area, Uncle Eric and Grandma were already there. We exchanged good mornings and begun eating. I was ravenous, and the delicious pineapple pastry just made me ten times hungrier so I dug in.
“Manners Avyanna, this is not how a lady should eat.“, Grandma scolded.
“Apologies Grandmother.” I apologized.
“Grammmmy, who can resist such delicious pineapple pastry. I could eat it every day for every meal and not get tired of it.” Nat used his silver tongue and winked at me. I’ve always wondered how could someone as nerdy as Nat could know to sweet talk people and be a people person.
Uncle Eric, “In my office after you are done. Both of you.”
It was uncle’s serious tone that got my attention. He was usually kind and happy person. But when mom passed away, we saw him getting serious. But he was normally fun to be around, if he was serious it meant he wanted to talk about something really important.
Uncle Eric was the current Duke of the State of Selena. It was my mom before him. And it will be Nat after him, thank whatever heavenly power that made him 3minutes older than me. I could never handle that title. You just heard grandma poking me. It was something that happened everyday every time I saw her. She would find a blacker spot in a perfectly black cloth if it was made by me. If not for Nat helping me out, I’d probably never appear in front of her.
We both knocked on uncle’s office door and entered. He was reading a letter. It looked important and...royal? Selena was the most important state after Eunomia, the capital and Colete, the state Queen was from.
Uncle looked up from the letter and said, “Avyanna, Jonathan, we’ve received an invitation.”
