Chapter 1

Third Person

It was past curfew. Nicolas Black was sitting in the courtyard staring at the stars, thinking about how he let his grandfather, Sirius Black, down by being sorted into Slytherin. Elizabella Malfoy is the Gryffindor prefect. She was patrolling, making sure no one was out past curfew, when she saw Nicolas.

She walked up to him and said, “What are you doing out here, Black? I’ll have to tell Professor McGonagall.”

Nicolas hesitated to tell her but said, “I come out here to think about how much my family hates me.”

This made Elizabella feel bad. She knew how he felt. Her parents didn’t like her because she was in Gryffindor. Nicolas sat up on the bench and looked at her.

She sat next to him and said, “I know how you feel. My parents aren’t exactly fond of me. I’m the first Malfoy to be in Gryffindor.”

Nick looked at her and then looked down. “My grandad, Sirius Black, he was in Gryffidor. His whole family was in Slytherin.” He paused. “He didn’t want anyone else in his line to be Slytherin. I’m his grandson and I disappointed him.”

Elizabella didn’t know what to say, so she hugged him. Nicolas looked at her and said, “I never knew someone had felt that way too.” Elizabella smiled and was about to say something, when Nicolas spoke more. “Has anyone called you a traitor or disappointment?”

Elizabella said, “Many people have called me a bloodtraitor. Someone pushed me in the hall, the other day.”

Nick looked at her seriously. “Well those people are not very nice.”

Elizabella laughed at this. Not the laugh where she pretends to be interested, a real genuine laugh. This boy made her feel important, as if she were his friend.

Nicolas also laughed. “Just ask them, ‘What’s got your wand in a twist?’”

She laughed again. Then they heard footsteps and talking in the corridor. “Did you hear that? Some students are out of bed.”

Elizabella whispered, “Hide” and pulled him behind a bush.

Nicolas whispered, “Wow. You’re strong.” He poked his head from behind the bush to see who it was. Then he quickly ducked his head. “It’s McGonagall.”

Elizabella’s mouth dropped. “We’re going to get caught. I know we will.”

McGonagall said, “I’m sure I heard someone talking. It must have been my imagination.”

Nicolas whispered to Ebony, “Oh no.”

Elizabella had a puzzled look on her face. “What?”

Nicolas is still whispering, “You know, Slytherin and Gryffindor. They might think we killed each other.” He laughed quietly.

She giggles a bit. “I doubt that.” The footsteps faded.

Nick looks up “What should we do now? If we go inside, they might see us.

“We could stay here.”

Nicolas looked at her. “Okay, it’s better here, with you, than it is in the dungeons.”

She blushed a little, but he didn’t notice because it’s dark.

Nick holds her hand

She blushes more. “What are you doing?!” She whisper-yelled.

Nicolas took his hand away and stutters. “Uh...I...My hand was co-ld” He said, trying to cover it up. But he was a bad liar and started laughing.

Elizabella tried to be sarcastic, by saying, “And you think my hand is warm?”

Nicolas laughed at her attempt. “How was I supposed to know?”

“I don’t know.”

Nicolas laughed again, then it faded.

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know.” He sat back against the wall of the school. He thought of the memory of his grandfather dying.

Elizabella softened her voice. “You can tell me.”

He looked at her and told her. “I can’t get the memory of my grandpa dying out of my head. I don’t know how it’s there. I didn’t witness his death.” His eyes started to tear up.

“Oh. I’m sorry.” She kissed his cheek to make him feel better.

He blushed a little bit. “Hanging out with you makes me feel better about everything.”

He reached his hand out to hold hers, when she suddenly got up and said, “It’s getting late. I should probably go.”

“Oh yeah. Sorry I was keeping you. I think I’m going to stay here.”

“Okay. It was nice hanging out with you.” She waved to him.

“It was nice hanging out with you too.” Elizabella went back to the Gryffindor common room, thinking about how he was such a sweet boy.

Nicolas sat there for a few minutes, thinking about her. He finally got up after what seemed liked an hour and walked to his common room. Nicolas fell asleep thinking of their conversation.

Who knew a Gryffindor and Slytherin would get along.
