Hello Stranger
As I sat in the crowded airport terminal, surrounded by the symphony of rolling suitcases and distant announcements echoing overhead, I encountered the most peculiar young man I had ever met. He appeared to be in his early twenties, with tousled hair that framed his face and large, expressive eyes that sparkled with an unusual intensity. Clad in a faded vintage jacket adorned with patches from different cities, he seemed out of place among the sea of business attire and travel-worn backpacks.
As travelers bustled by, oblivious to the world around them, he sat cross-legged on the floor, scribbling furiously in a worn notebook, seemingly lost in a world of his own creation. His presence added an unexpected layer of intrigue to the otherwise mundane wait for my flight out of the country, prompting me to wonder what stories lay behind his eccentric demeanor.
We were both seated in the same waiting area, surrounded by the impatient chatter of travelers and the occasional announcement crackling over the intercom.
It wasn't long before he struck up a conversation, sharing wild stories about his favorite video games and the adventures he dreamed of having around the world. His enthusiasm was contagious; I found myself laughing at his imaginative tales.
As we chatted, I learned that he had an entire collection of postcards along with his passport stamped from various places I hoped to visit someday.
Despite the chaos of the airport, our connection felt effortless and genuine. Before boarding our flight, we exchanged contact information, and to my surprise, we quickly became best friends, bonding over our shared love for travel and adventure.
This unexpected friendship transformed an ordinary travel day into a memorable journey that I cherish to this day.
Destin has always found profound beauty in life’s simplest moments. His demeanor was refreshingly uncomplicated, steering clear of the weighty worries that often accompany thoughts of tomorrow. Yet, within this lighthearted approach, Destin embraced the lessons that each day presented, regardless of the challenges and heartaches that came with them.
This young man could easily be described as happy-go-lucky, navigating life with an infectious spirit. He bore an extraordinary sense of responsibility towards others, displaying the rare gift of empathy that allowed him to connect with those around him genuinely.
The young man, whom I had only just met yet felt an inexplicable connection to, wore a smile that resembled a suit of armor, its brightness a stark contrast to the challenges surrounding him.
His eyes, despite hints of weariness, sparkled with an unyielding spirit, revealing the depth of his experiences.
As he navigated the storms of life—each obstacle a testament to his resilience—he did so with a grace that inspired those around him, turning even the harshest tempests into opportunities for growth and understanding.
If one were to encapsulate Destin’s essence, it would be through the image of someone who could effortlessly breathe joy into a somber room, transforming sadness into laughter with his mere presence.
When I later met his friends and loved ones, they painted a vivid picture of his personality. They recalled how his jubilant laughter could resonate like music in the air, recognizable to all, even if one wore a blindfold.
Surprisingly, none of those who knew him best anticipated the remarkable heights he would reach in life. Destin was cherished simply as a good man, deeply loved for his kindness and genuine nature within his inner circle. However, on a broader scale, he was celebrated as something much greater.
To the world at large, he earned the respectful moniker of “The Pathfinder,” a fitting title for someone who not only navigated his own journey with courage but also illuminated the path for others to follow.
I met Destin on February 13th, 2010, as I prepared to board an international flight bound for South Africa. I couldn’t help but notice as he stood a few feet away.
He was strikingly odd-looking, with an eccentric style that made him stand out in the crowd. Destin's hair was unkempt, and his clothes seemed to clash in a chaotic yet deliberate way, a mismatch of colors and patterns that did little to soothe my nerves.
What really caught my attention, though, was the strange, almost unsettling grin plastered across his face, reminiscent of a cat that had just devoured the canary.
It was a smile that exuded a mix of mischief and confidence, making him appear both intriguing and slightly disconcerting.
I felt a ripple of unease wash over me, exacerbated by my unusual phobia of social interactions. The thought of making eye contact with him filled me with anxiety. I could already envision a scenario where he would strike up a bizarre conversation, filled with odd anecdotes or peculiar questions that would sweep me into an unwanted engagement.
The idea of interacting with a stranger, especially one as distinctly unconventional as he, was more than I could muster at that moment. I was simply not in the mood to meet anyone new, let alone have an encounter that could veer into the unusual or uncomfortable.
So, I averted my gaze, hoping to slip past him unnoticed as I headed toward the jet bridge.
This trip was meant to be my escape, a time for me to unwind and savor life away from the hustle and bustle. I craved solitude and peace during the long flight, a chance to immerse myself in my own thoughts without any interruptions. But reflecting on past experiences, I recalled a particularly awkward moment that made me cringe.
Not too long ago, I made a rather foolish mistake—one that still baffles me. There I was, minding my own business in a crowded line, when I noticed a stranger nearby.
In a moment of spontaneous friendliness, I flashed him a warm smile. Little did I know that a simple gesture would lead to complications I never anticipated. To my surprise, he took my smile as an invitation. Before I could fully comprehend what was happening, he reached out and grabbed my hand, intertwining his fingers with mine.
What began as a lighthearted moment quickly escalated into an uncomfortable situation, as he held onto my hand with an unexpected tenacity. I stood there in awkward silence, surrounded by fellow travelers, wondering why I hadn’t just pulled away right then and there. “Why didn’t I just let go?” I still ask myself, feeling a mix of embarrassment and confusion.
But as fate would have it, amidst the throng of people, he began walking toward me, drawing closer with each step. My heart raced, and I was left grappling with a blend of disbelief and the desire to retreat from this unexpected encounter.
As I made my way through the bustling airport terminal, I noticed a figure approaching me with unwavering determination. He maintained steady eye contact, a bold choice that seemed almost intentional, as if he wanted to ensure that I was fully aware of his presence and the request he was about to make.
To my surprise, he wore a broad smile that seemed to harbor a secret, almost as if he was brimming with anticipation for our encounter. I couldn’t help but wonder, “What could this gentleman possibly want?” The thought flitted through my mind as he closed the distance between us. Just before he reached my side, he opened his mouth, his eagerness palpable.
“Excuse me! Excuse me, sir... Do you happen to have the time in South Africa Standard Time (SAST)?” His voice rang out clearly, cutting through the ambient noise of travelers shuffling by and the distant announcements echoing through the terminal. It startled me at first, drawing the attention of over fifty fellow travelers who were waiting to pass through security, their heads snapping towards us, momentarily intrigued by the interruption.
Stunned into silence for a brief second, I took a moment to process his question. “Yes, I do, my friend. It’s 9 PM,” I replied, my voice returning to me as I pointed to the watch on my wrist.
A twinge of embarrassment washed over me as I observed his struggle to communicate in this foreign environment. His brow furrowed slightly, and I could tell that the words were tangled up in his throat, each syllable fighting to escape.
Yet, in that moment, I felt a sense of camaraderie with him. Hearing another English speaker, even one grappling with the nuances of the language, provided a flicker of comfort amidst the chaos that surrounded us. It made the otherwise overwhelming airport atmosphere feel just a little less daunting.
As he visibly relaxed following my response, I realized that this encounter marked the start of what would evolve into a long and meaningful friendship.
As he drew closer, I couldn’t help but notice the friendliness that radiated from his eyes and the genuine warmth of his smile—a bright and welcoming contrast to the sterile and impersonal environment of the airport. In that instant, the hectic hustle and bustle transformed into the backdrop of a budding connection, making this crowded terminal feel more inviting than it had moments before.
He reached out his hand and introduced himself with a firm yet friendly grip. “Hello, my name is Destin,” he said, his accent thick but his enthusiasm infectious.
I paused for a moment, considering my own hesitation. What the heck, I thought to myself, after all, we were both strangers in a strange land. I might as well say hello. “Hey, what’s up? My name is Thomas,” I replied, a smile breaking across my face as I leaned over slightly, eager to bridge the gap between us.
As my curiosity deepened, I leaned in a bit closer, feeling the atmosphere between us shift. “So, what brings you here?” I inquired, sensing that this encounter held the promise of something remarkable.
His expression shifted, and with a hint of surprise, “So what’s a young man like yourself doing in Africa?” Something was intriguing about him; he didn’t fit the mold of a typical traveler to such a vibrant yet challenging continent. I couldn’t shake the feeling that his presence held a hidden story waiting to be unraveled.
“I’m actually on my way to assist the FBI with an investigation,” he explained, his voice steady but laced with urgency. “It’s a missing person’s case. A young American girl has disappeared, and this is the sixth case involving an American child in just the last two weeks.”
His words hung in the air, heavy with significance, and I felt a jolt of shock run through me. The gravity of the situation struck me hard. “Okay, you have my attention,” I blurted out, unable to contain my intrigue. The FBI? Wow... I would’ve never guessed. The mere thought of an American child missing in a place like this added a layer of complexity to our encounter, transforming it from casual small talk into something far more consequential.
I mean, this kid definitely didn’t fit the mold of your typical FBI agent.
He wasn’t clad in the standard black suit and tie that you’d expect from someone in that line of work.
There were no mirrored sunglasses perched on his nose, no large trench coat billowing around him, and certainly no bulletproof vest emblazoned with the bold letters “FBI” across his back. Instead, he wore a simple, casual outfit—a worn graphic tee and faded jeans that suggested a laid-back attitude rather than the serious demeanor that typically accompanies someone in law enforcement.
Maybe my perception was skewed; perhaps I’ve just watched one too many crime thrillers and have developed my own narrow-minded stereotype of how an FBI agent should appear.
I was left to wonder if this unassuming figure was indeed involved in something as serious as federal investigations, or if he simply enjoyed breaking the mold.
“Yeah... Well, it’s a long story,” he replied, his voice laced with an air of mystery, as if he were holding back a wealth of intriguing experiences

Your story has a very visual energy. I could see each scene as comic panels while reading. The emotions and atmosphere are very well done. Have you thought about an illustrated version?
