Chapter 1~ The Dancing Black Fuzzy’s

I heard crying from behind the locked door my siblings were behind, I could hear a hushed voice speaking to the crying, scared voice, trying to calm and comfort them. My heart slowly broke as I unlocked the door where my little sister sat next to my little brother, crying on his shoulder looking scared out of her mind. I slowly opened the door letting it creek to announce my presence in the room, both of my siblings jumped up in surprise and fear as my brother shoved my sister behind him, seconds later, a sigh escaped him as he realized it was just me.

"You scared me, I was about to hit you.” He said as he lifted Annabella back on the bed they had jumped off of. I smiled then nodded at him making my way towards both of them after locking the old white door behind me.

"Kale," Annabella said, calling me by my nickname from pronouncing my name wrong when she was little. "Daddy was yelling at Andy again." She snitched before Andy could shut her up.

I looked at him giving him the look, asking if he was okay, to my sadness he nodded his head as he started to twiddle his thumbs together. LIAR.

I dropped my old school bag and grabbed my 14-year-old brother in the small closet, where barely any clothes hung and glared at him. He knew I caught him, besides him being a lair and Anna snitching, they were good kids.....Unless I had to drag my baby brother into stealing food...I always hoped I could keep him out of my struggles, but sometimes, it would leak through me.

He slowly took off his warm blue hoodie showing me his arms that were bruised with fingerprints up his arm turning a dark purple, yellowish. Guilt rose through my chest, swallowing up my soul as I stared holes into his arm before he quietly covered it and smiled.

"You can't always be here to protect us you know." He whispered so little Annabella couldn't hear. I nodded slightly in a daze filled with guilt and regret for not being here early. I had to get money somehow. I worked 2 jobs in the day and one at night to pay for Annabella's and Andy's school funds, plus food and the bills our father doesn't pay. I was mentally losing it, most days I can't feel my body as I force myself to go without sleep and food throughout the week. And here I was worried about myself when my brother was getting abused.

"Micheal?" Andy's voice rang through my now ringing ears. I looked into his dull brown eyes that were slightly hidden behind his curly brown shaggy hair as he finished slipping on his hoodie. His eyes held concern but his face looked as if he didn't care. Damn that resting btch face. I smiled at that thought, knowing full well that he was a little me that spoke. Should I be proud? No. Am I? Yep.

"Let's go." He said, grabbing my arm as he led me out of the dark closet that opened into a sleeping Annabella.

"I can sleep on the floor tonight if you would like." I shook my head as I crutched down, pulling out a pillow and blanket that I used for the floor. I then made my way towards the small lamp making sure Andy was tucked in with Annabella. As I clicked the lamp off I heard a door open from downstairs, was he living? Or was he coming home? I waited for a couple of minutes before I heard light snoring then I made my move. I slowly got up and threw my brown, worn-out hoodie back on as I made my way to the locked door, opening it and slipping out, I made my way downstairs to be greeted by.....Nothing.

"What do you think your doin’ boy?? A thick, hoarse voice spoke from behind me. As if spider crawled up my neck, goosebumps littered my skin as I slowly turned around to face the man I called father. "Do I nee-need to repeat myself stupid??!" He slurred as he stumbled forward towards me. I backed up towards the worn-out couches and broken tv. Fear started to paralyze me as he got closer with his vodka bottle half empty. I couldn't think, I couldn't move, I couldn't escape. All I could do was repeat fuck in my mind. And fuck was right, as the vodka bottle meet my head making my body fling across the room as the shard embedded themselves into my skin.

"DAD?!!!" The voice echoed through the small house as the world spinner and black fuzzy things danced in front of me.

"Michael-......Ok?.......Stairs......KALE.........Go back" Pieces of conversation rang in my ears as I was dragged up, where up? How up? I didn't know I just felt like I was being levitated but with cold arms randomly shaking me. Sleep I didn't have taken its revenge? Food I hid instead of eating taking its toll? I didn't know, but it didn't hurt. It felt quite good. That was the scariest thing, I wanted it, and my body wasn't fighting the now huge black puddles that were taking over my vision and then, nothing.

Silence.

Peace.

Darkness.

Heika van Walderveen: I had to get used to the style. It’s a lot of switching and getting back into the story of the characters. Also the different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning. But once you’re used to it, it’s really quite original. The plot is good, but it’s only book 1 (out of 3), but so far so good...
