The Cross

"Liam they're here," his twin sister, Lucy yelled.

"Coming," he said while turning off the tv in the living room.

She opened the door.

"Hi Lucy," Robert and Nick say in unision.

"Hey guys."

Moving to let them through, Liam came and immediately pulled them to his new ps5 console. Lucy shut the door as Mrs.Sear pulled out of the driveway.

"Woah, I thought these were sold out," Nick said.

"Dude, how did you get it?" Robert asked amazed by the white and black console.

"They were and still are sold out, I still have no idea how my mom managed to get

it."

Turning it on, Robert got three ps5 controllers from the counter.

"My mom got me and Lucy controllers and one for when she has time to play with us. Lucy can we use your controller?" Liam asked.

"Sure, I'll be upstairs."

They played on the ps5 for an hour then Nick asked Liam "weren't you building a house? You said something about a wooden house the other day."

"Oh yea, I only got through 3 walls we can work on it now if you guys want to and Im making an actual house not one of those small tiki hut things. Lucy we are going outside!" Liam yelled.

"K I'll be there in 5 minutes!" She yelled back.

They opened the back door that looked onto the woods. They walked up a short path into a clearing.

Lucy ran up to them panting and said "mom told us we weren't supposed to go into the woods when she isnt here."

"We are only going to the wooden house, we are going to go into the woods for 5 minutes to get supplies and we will come right back" Liam assured her.

"Fine."

Nick ran ahead to the small wooden house that was made of sticks, bark and leaves. It was held together by mud which had dried bonding all the materials.

"How's this mud holding all this together?" Nick asked, the architect in him coming out.

"The mud by the stream is mostly made of clay so it acts like a rock hard glue when it dries," Liam informed him.

"That's awesome."

"Hey can we get started already?" Robert asks holding a bunch of leaves and sticks.

"Alright me and Robert will start collecting things and I know two aren't gonna get dirty so you can tell us where to put it," Liam told them.

"Ok," they all agreed.

Liam and Robert went searching for large sticks and leaves by the small, slow moving stream which was about 3 minutes down the path.

"We probably should have brought a bucket for the mud," Liam said.

"Yea lets get these sticks back to the shack and we can go get a bucket."

"Rob! Rob! Look at what I found!" He yelled.

In Liam's hand was a beautiful silver cross the size of his palm. It was adorned with purple, green, and blue gemstones.

"Wha.. woah, that- whe- how?!" He stuttered.

"I don't know how this is so clean, it looks like it was just placed here," Liam ignored him.

They both ran back to the wooden house without another word.

"Guys look what I found," he yelled again when they got there.

"Let me see," Nick said.

He started lifting his hand up and down weighing it.

"This is pretty heavy. If we're keeping it I want the base."

"Where did you find it?" Lucy asked.

"Close to the stream"

"Was it in a circle of rocks?"

"Yea there was a small circle around it."

"Put it back right now. It'll bring you very bad luck. I read all about rock circles. Your never, ever supposed to touch what is inside of them."

"Calm down, its fine," he said.

"Yea, those things aren't real. You probably read it off wikipedia or something," Robert said.

"Fine, do whatever you want but I don't want to be cursed so I'm going home," she said.

As she walked home, the guys decided they would each get 1/3 of the cross. Robert and Liam each got half of the gemstones and Nick got the silver base.

While checking his phone Robert said "Dude, we spent 2 hours on this already , My mom will be here in about 10 minutes so we should head back."

They quietly started back up the trail, each of the admiring their piece.

"How much do you think this costs, Nick," Robert asked.

"I don't know, it really depends on what type of rocks those are and what type of metal this is. The base for example, could cost from 5 dollars to thousands. Depending if this is some really rare metal or if its just really heavy plastic." He said.

They entered just as the doorbell rang.

Lucy yelled "Rob, Nick!"

Opening the door Mrs.Sear said "Hi sweety."

"Hello," Lucy greeted her.

"Hi, mom," Robert said.

"Hello Mrs.Sear," Nick said

They both walked past her to her car.

"Your mom still hasn't arrived?" Mrs.Sear asked.

"Not yet she had to work a little overtime today," Lucy informed her.

"Yea she's going to be here in about 30 minutes," Liam said.

"Alright if you ever need anything just give me a call" she said

"Ok we will," Lucy replied

Mrs.Sear turned and walked to her car as Lucy shut the door.

"You really shouldn't have taken that thing," she said.

"For the tenth billion time, its fine," Liam said.

"No, it's not, what if you got cursed, what will you do?"

"Nothing, cause I wasn't. You read too many weird books."

"I dont know what the curse was but I'm sure its bad luck to take it out of the circle and especially bad to break it."

"We didn't break it the gems come out and your just jealous you won't get any money from selling them."

"Most curses start the day after it is put upon someone so start watching your back tomorrow," Lucy said as she walked up the stairs.
