Summary

Rebekah has multiple personalities from abuse when she was a child. As a result her world is magical. She escapes an abusive boyfriend, by going to Paris, but he finds her there. Many happy endings. This novel is based on the true story of the author but employs magic realism heavily to symbolically communicate on many levels about the nature of life, love, beauty and freedom. Rebekah's dreams are increasingly more and more beautiful and intense and the line between reality and dreams blurs, as does the line between sanity and madness. As we explore inside the mind of someone with multiple personalities, from flashbacks to the 1960s and into the jungles, markets, nightclubs and streets of the world, Rebekah is on a journey ultimately to find and return peace to the world, not to punish it.

Chapter 1

Rebekah’s Closet

Amy Jackson

12/1/11

It is October, and the chill is returning to the air, as the leaves begin to paint themselves brighter colors again. A middle-aged woman in a black dress approaches a silvered gray shed and circles it, pouring kerosene on it from an old watering can. Her dress looks like it came from the early 1800s, has all sorts of things attached to it, pieces of old books, spines and pages, bells, pocket watches, so many pockets she doesn’t remember anymore, skeleton keys, pieces of ribbon and string, pieces of colored fabrics, wispy. She is whispering something to herself, and her movements are childlike. When the can is empty she giggles and begins to whisper louder and skip like a girl, reciting a nursery rhyme. Then she begins repeating:

“… Believe what you will, do no harm, and let Karma find the guilty …”

She stops at the door, strokes it with memory, then pulls out a box of matches. The woman thoughtfully strikes a match and goes around the shed again in a reverse circle, lighting it with matches as she goes. The shed begins to catch on fire and she begins to cry and laugh alternately. It makes an inferno and she steps back.

A hand comes to her shoulder and she is with a band of scarecrows, only they are alive. The fire burns to the ground as they dance around it. When the fire is dying, the scarecrows leave her and she reaches for a hand that reaches for her from the nearby woods across the road. It is the hand of a living tree, which takes her into its embrace as night begins to fall …

The next morning, a man’s worn boot kicks at the cold coals of the fire. His hand is now reaching into the ashes for pieces of metal, pieces of woodworking tools …

Hi Amy Jackson,

I just finished reading your story Rebekah’s Closet and I loved it so much. Your writing weaves magic realism and psychological depth into a truly haunting and beautiful narrative I kept picturing it as a visually surreal comic.

I was particularly struck by the opening of Chapter 1, where Rebekah a middle-aged woman scarred by childhood abuse approaches a strange silver-gray shed in autumn. The scene where she pours kerosene around the structure, whispers a nursery rhyme, and begins the ritual burning is so cinematic: fire flickering on a reverse circle, switching between laughter and tears, then followed by animated scarecrows and a living tree. These elements of symbolic imagery and emotional conflict would be stunning visually, blending dark fantasy with raw emotional reality. Another memorable moment is Rebekah’s uneasy escape to Paris, seeking freedom from an abusive relationship, only for her past to follow her there. The interplay between flashbacks and present-day scenes memories merging with dreamlike sequences offers rich opportunity for visual storytelling. Depicting internal layers of personalities, dream logic, and the border between reality and hallucination would be captivating in a graphic format.I’m a commissioned artist, and I’d love to draw your story into a comic or manga. No pressure though.I genuinely feel your blend of emotional depth and surreal imagery could come alive beautifully in illustrated form.
