Chapter 1

I have to do a change. Better I have to MAKE a change. Have you ever looked around and seen your friends carrying on with their lives and you feel stuck? Well, I am. Constantly. Since high school I am a bookworm, nerdy and a little awkward. Cliche right? My mom constantly compares me with my cousin's. She's always like: " did you see Vanessa? She got her economy degree! And is engaged to be married with some upscale company CEO's son. Ow and Greg started his own start-up, it's an app!" She talks and I roll my eyes inside my skull.

But I am rambling and forgot to introduce myself. My name is Luna, I am a 25 yo. I still live with my mom and dad. I am an only child and I am a forensic psychologist. I love my job, but it's slow since it's not that big of a town. I work in the justice department. I graduated top of my class, with a lot of recommendations from my teachers. But my parents didn't like that I chose this path. I think it’s because they really don’t understand. The idea of their little girl talking with dangerous criminals was unspeakable! It was a part of the job but not all of it. And there are a lot of protocols for that.

Anyway, I have been nursing the idea of transferring for a bigger city and finally got the balls to fill the application. I didn’t tell anyone yet.

I was at work, minding my business and I got the email. I was accepted and I was going to move to D.C. ! I was so excited! I started to apply to multiple specialization classes I wanted to take and my paycheck is getting an upgrade! I was happy! And then I realized I have to tell my parents I was moving out. I only could think “Oh fuck!”. I shared the news with my so-called boyfriend. Yeah I have one of those… He said: “Congratulations babe!” And the next thing was: “ But how are you going to keep working from here? Are you going to have to travel back and forth?”

Luna: No, I am moving there.

Jeff: You are, what? I don’t believe in long distance relationships.

Luna: So what do you suggest?

Jeff: Don’t take it.

Well, he was a high school sweetheart. I thought about ending this relationship for a long time now. My parents love him. But we never moved on, it felt odd to say the least.

Jeff: Why don’t we talk about it on Friday over dinner?

Luna: Sure…

But my mind was made. That too was a page I needed to turn.

I called my mom and said I won’t be home for dinner. I knocked on Jeff’s apartment door, he didn’t answer right away. I knocked again. No answer. So I used my key and I heard noises coming from his bedroom.

Luna: For fucks sake Jeff!!

He was watching porn with his headphones in the tv, rubbing his dick. When he saw me he rapidly fixed his pants and jumped out of bed. I looked at the tv screen. There were two dudes.

Luna: OMG it’s that gay porn?

He was pale as a ghost and fumble with the remote to turn the tv off. I went to his living room and sat down on the couch. I am here with a purpose, I am not backing out now. He came out of his room looking a little defeated.

Jeff: Luna I can explain…

Luna: Jeff, you don’t need to… I came unannounced and caught you in a… Private moment. For that I’m sorry.

Jeff: I gave you the key, you should come in unannounced.

Luna: Jeff, we have been friends since Junior High. Best friends. But maybe we should get back to that.

Jeff: What are you saying?

Luna: We should break up.

He hung his head low and covered his face with his hands. Oh GOD please don’t cry.

Jeff: Is it because it was gay porn?

Luna: What?! No! I’m taking that job in D.C. I’m moving out of town. I don’t mind if you are…

He is silent.

Luna: Look, we are together for 10 years Jeff. I graduated, you graduated. We never talked about the future.

Jeff: We did!

Luna: But never draw a plan. We were over for a long time. We just got too used to each other. It’s been 3 months with no sex and you live alone for fuck’s sake. We don’t want to be together anymore.

He always was a reasonable person.

Jeff: You are right. So, are we still friends though right?

Luna: Yes, we are.

Jeff: So, good luck on your new job.

Luna: Thanks. Well I’m going… This was faster than I imagined.

So I decided to have a drink at the bar. When I walked in, some heads turned to look at me, I am not their usual patron. I ask for a beer and get lost in thought. Soon the one drink turns into four and something snaps me out of my thoughts. A guy around my age sits down beside me.

Guy: Do you like basketball?

Luna: What?

Guy: Do you like basketball?

And motions for the tv.

Luna: Oh no, I wasn’t really watching.

Guy: Oh, sorry. You were watching with so much concentration…

I just smiled and turned my attention to my almost empty glass.

Guy: Hard day?

Luna: Not really, just weird.

I don’t know why, but I started to throw up my feelings on this guy.

Luna: I got the job I wanted, I’ll move out my parent’s place, and I just broke up a 10 years old relationship.

Guy: It’s a lot for a day… Sorry about your boyfriend.

Luna: Huh, Don’t be. I am not.

Guy: Bad relationship?

Luna: No, It was mild. It was never getting anywhere. Never too hot, never really cold… Always in the middle.

He nodded.

Guy: I’m Adam, by the way.

Luna: Luna…

Adam: Beautiful name…

Luna: Thanks…

I really looked at Adam for the first time. He had shoulder length light brown hair, and piercing blue eyes. He was wearing a suit, but his shirt’s collar was open and he wasn’t wearing a tie. He was a handsome guy. And suddenly I wanted to keep chatting with him.

Luna: And you? Bad day?

He took a deep breath.

Adam: You can say that…

He let out a humorless laugh.

Adam: I just got fired… And I don’t really feel like going home.

Luna: Sorry to hear it…

Adam: Facts of life right?

I looked at his hand and I didn’t see a ring.

Luna: Maybe you should think that as an opportunity to find a better path to you…

Adam: Maybe…

We talked more, and it turns out the drinks were flowing. We laughed , talked and thank god I can hold my liquor.

Luna: I should get going, my mom is going to freak out…

Adam: I walk you to your car, it’s the least I can do to pay for mine therapy session today…

Luana: Nonsense… Thank you for being a good company for the night.

I stumble a little out of my seat.

Adam: Yeah, you shouldn’t be driving…

Luna: I am not… I’m just calling an uber. Bye Adam, see you around…

I walked out, but when I saw he’s right behind me.

Adam: Just so your uber came, I am calling one myself…

The cold september night air hit my face and goosebumps crawled up my spine. I see he is really tall, with broad shoulders. He took off his coat and put on my shoulders and his movement he came closer to me almost touching but he didn’t. And let me longing. Then I started screaming in my head and took a step back from him. WHAT THE FUCK I WAS DOING? WHAT DID I WANT WITH THIS MAN? I DON’T DO THAT! DO I? He put his hands in his pockets and looked at me with a funny expression.

Luna: What?

Adam: I came into this bar today to drink my sorrows away, I wasn’t expecting to meet anyone. I wasn't expecting to sit beside a hot, smart, funny girl and talk. Thank you for making my day better.

Luna: You are welcome, but where’s this hot girl you are talking about?

He laughed and took a step closer, put his piercing blue eyes on mine and his thumb struck my cheek, without any further notice he kissed me. I immediately warmed up, my heart was hammering in my chest. I could taste the beer in his tongue when he slipped it inside my mouth. The heat from his hand on the back of my neck was making me tingle all over. I started imagining his tongue doing other things and I felt my panties wet. Oh, he was a good kisser. He broke the kiss and I already missed the warmth of his lips.

Adam: And she's a great kisser…

Luna: Well, I must say since you are the 4th guy I kiss, you are in the top 2 of my list.

Adam: Top 2?

He said laughing.

Luna: Yeah, nobody beat Timmy in 4th grade.

Adam: Well, now I am going to fight Timmy for it…

There's A minute silence.

Adam: Well is your uber close?

Luna: Oh shit I forgot to call it…

I search for my phone on my purse.

Adam: What if I call an uber and… We go to my place?
