The begining...

As I sat there on top of the trees, I wondered what my purpose was...I sucked in a deep breath, the cool air felt good. I looked at the setting sun. It would soon be twilight, I smiled. how peaceful it seemed, how dreadful it felt. I took a few more deep breaths, and I hopped down from the trees. my bare feet hit the ground without a sound, and I started to walk back home.

It was a normal Tuesday morning for my family. The Eddisons, First there is my older brother Oliver and sister Ruby. Ruby was a year older than me- i was sixteen, she was seventeen- She was your typical popular girl, Brown long hair, Blue eyes and freckles. She was always so perfect, had her whole life planned out, study hard go to college, get a job marry a man. I always thought it was boring; having a normal life, to make my life the same as everyone else’s.

Oliver was two years older than me, He was tall, dirty blonde hair, large round glasses, he also had blue eyes and freckles. He was getting ready to move out, start his own life. I was closer to him. He was the only one who knew me well, who knew me beyond the outside, The only one who could see through my lies, but understand the reasoning behind them.

I was the first to wake up. I rolled off my bed and thumped on the floor, Oliver walked in and he started giggling, I glared at him. Then he checked his watch and told me I was about to miss the bus. I jumped up and slipped the first thing I could find, A black polo neck and a plaid skirt, I pulled my coat off the hanger as I shut the front door behind me. The air was dense and cold. I took a deep breath.

School. I hated school, the main reason i didn’t like it was because everyone there was shallow,

No-one was interesting, they all tried to fit in; Too much.

I walked to my first period, social studies.

As i entered the classroom, Marissa and her group of friends -who were hovering over her desk and staring at her phone- Looked up at the door and stared at me, The corner of Marriasa’s lips turned and she whispered into her friends ear, then she turned back towards me and said “What?” aggressively. She tossed her curly blonde hair behind her shoulder

“I mean you were obviously speaking about me” I said smoothly as a faint smile crossed my face

She gave me a look as if she were shocked that I spoke.

she raised one eyebrow, turned to her friends and continued giggling. Ugh. I rolled my eyes and walked past her and slumped down into my seat.

Break came soon enough, I walked through the halls and sat at my usual table.

Alone.

After school my sister got into her boyfriend’s red, shiny car. I guess I was walking then. offended, I glared at her whilst walking across the School’s parking lot. she looked backwards as her boyfriend was about to leave school grounds and then noticed me. She looked at me blankly for a moment and then turned around and shrugged it off.

I stopped in my tracks and stared at the car that was slowly moving out of my sight.

I took the long way home. It wasn’t like there was any reason to rush anything, Wasn’t like anybody cared when I got home and I’m guessing no one even cared if I got home. I smiled darkly. The smile faded fast. I decided to focus on where I was going. It was a long path. It went from the roads down a dirt path that led to my favourite place in my city.

The beach,

It was located behind a small Forest, Meaning you would have to hike for a few minutes to get there. No one knew about it. That’s why I liked it.

As I reached the beach I glanced around, no one was there. I hadn’t come here in awhile. It was my happy place. I decided to pick up a few rocks along the way. This beach was special; I’d always felt some sort of connection to it. I sat on the sand and my eyes drooped closed. Finally I heard a voice. My eyes popped open automatically. I looked around to see who had spoken. There shouldn’t be anyone there, I kept searching until I gave up, it must’ve been all in my head. I closed my eyes once again but this time, there was something in the darkness, something that shouldn’t have been there, a soft glow. I opened my eyes and saw that same familiar glow.

It was a rock, a glowing white rock.

I walked over to it and stared at it. It must have washed up onto shore, I picked it up. It wasn’t fully opaque. I lifted my hand up and put the rock in front of the setting sun. The light that shined through it blinded me, I flinched away dropping onto the sand. I tossed the rock in front of me. And put my head in my hands. there was a disturbing buzz coming from my head. I didn’t like it. The buzz got louder and louder until it eventually became unbearable. My eyes opened. The stone glistened in what was left of the sun. I stood up and walked over to the stone. Should I take it? Something felt wrong, almost like I shouldn’t be there. Almost.

The walk home wasn’t long. As I reached the door I knocked three times before Ruby opened it. She looked at me apologetic for a moment as if she were about to say sorry, for making me walk home alone.

The look of her face changed into a blank stare. I brushed past her and walked through the entryway and up the large set of stairs located in the center of the room. I brushed my hands along the golden railing and ran up the hallway and into my room, I shut the door slowly and pulled out my homework and plopped it onto my unmade bed.

I switched the lamp on and pulled my jacket off, thud. I looked onto the floor and remembered the rock id found. It was purple now I lifted it up and stared into the misty rock. It looked as if the rock held steam inside it. I watched the steam roll around inside the rock, swoosh around slowly hitting the sides, I watched it turn clockwise, then anti-clockwise, then clockwise again, from side to side, up and down. Moving, swirling, splashing.

I blinked.

How long had I been standing there? my legs were starting to wobble and the environment seemed darker…

I blinked a couple more times.

I lifted my hand up to check my watch,

There was no watch.

I didn’t own a watch, i had broken it a while ago,

But how long ago had that been? A month? Two? More importantly, how long had I been standing there. I walked slowly over to my door. Trying to steady my now shaking legs.

I grasped the handle and pulled the door open. My legs gave out and I fell into the door,

slamming it against its frame. I slid onto the floor and exhaled.

I didnt realise I had been holding my breath.

I stood up once again and turned to the door. I pulled it open, The hall was dark. Deserted.

I stepped out into the hall and walked towards the study. One of the only rooms with a clock. I creaked open the door- and instantly closed it again. Someone was in there. I turned around to go to my siblings rooms. Dad wasn’t home, neither was Oliver...so it must have been Ruby. hopefully. I creaked Ruby’s door open and stepped inside.

“What do you want?” she said as soon as she saw me. My blood ran cold. If she was in here, then who the hell was in the study!

“Oh...Uhm nothing i was just checking if-”

“Yeah, Weird. Now get out!” she cut me off

I closed the door behind me. My body seemed frozen. I shakily walked over to the study. I put my hand onto the door handle, Or at least I tried, I ended up twitching my finger. It felt as if I couldn’t move, Which was silly. Of course i could move...Right? I tried to move my hand again but nothing. I was just standing there, like a statue. I heard shuffling from inside the room. With all my strength I lifted my hand and pulled open the door. But nothing, I hadn’t moved. Had I? I didn’t know, I didn’t necessarily care either, I was in the exact same position as before. I took a deep breath and slowly moved my hand towards the door, this time I knew I was reaching for the door, about to discover who had broken into my house.

Nothing.

Nothing at all, just a stack of papers and a closed window. I walked inside. The room seemed normal, Had nothing been in here? Was it just all in my head..? I stepped towards the window. It was locked, I whimpered and slid onto the ground. I tilted my head upwards and noticed the clock.

One a.m.

It was one a.m?!

No. The clock had to be wrong…

It couldn’t possibly be one a.m! I had gotten home from the beach at seven. Which means i had been staring at a rock for six hours!

“No way, now, way, no way” i found myself repeating.

I heard shuffling down stairs.

What if it went downstairs?

I had to check! I stood up. But slid back down the wall again. The door creaked open and Oliver walked in. “No way, no way, no way, no way.” He sat down next to me. “Are you okay Dee?” he said, concerned. “No..Im not okay i just-” i paused “I’m going insane” i tried to smile. It wasn’t a nice smile. “What?” “I-Don’t know.. It’s just, school right- and then- to the beach...a-and now it’s…`` I trailed off. ’What?” he repeated. “I- I don’t know, okay!” I Snapped harshly. He stood up and walked towards the door. “I’m here if you wanna talk...OK? He shut the door behind him
