A Well Crafted Mystery
"Well, honestly, this was a refreshing mystery novel. The twist and turns in here constantly pushed characters - and me at that matter - from comfort zones, handing one shift after another. Besides the whole small town atmosphere, the tightly knit community, was nicely portrayed as well, with people knowing one another and building up rumours, or spreading news and so on... I loved the characters as well. Paul and his mood shifts or how flexible Sarah and Danny were - able to forgive and be friends again multiple times. It felt realistic, especially concerning long term (childhood) friendships. Talking about the ending of this novel, it was a satisfying one. I was hoping for this book to end differently, but the way my expectations were broken was amazing, and I honestly adore the ending, since it threw me off. Simply wonderful! The blend between mystery and supernatural was greatly done. Talking about the writing, I liked the povs and the occasional snarky or sarcastic comments coming off from the characters' minds, the jokes themselves seemed honest to both Cora's, Sarah's' povs and were something different, a refreshing way to intwine humour. The few things, that I personally didn't like start with the writing style as well. So, firstly, what I missed was little more description of places, like Cora's house, the fair etc. Secondly, the ending scene in 48 chapter. Don't get me wrong, I personally loved the finale, and the last few paragraphs were gold, but I do have a question, how it happened, since the ending was concerned more about Cora's emotions, mind, than how events proceeded to the final outcome. Another thing I could note, was more apparent in the start of the book. There were a few scenes, when a certain phrase would be said in a narrative and then would be transferred to dialogue after a couple of sentences, looking exactly the same, word for word. There were also a few missing words here and there and I think I remember a confused 'of' instead 'off'. These mistakes were more in the beginning and the end. A little touch of proofreading should clear those off. And they did not disturb my enjoyment of the novel. All in all, a huge thank you goes to the author for writing such a mesmerising mystery novel. It was a true pleasure, especially since I haven't read a mystery in a while now. Kudos! Lastly, I'd encourage anyone who'd be looking for an entertaining mystery/horror book on Inkitt, to pick this gem up! ^^ "
