Chapter 1

It was the first day of my junior year, just as I was about done dressing, my mom yelled from downstairs “come on Lana, you’re going to be late on your first day” I threw my long thick curly hair into a messy bun, ran downstairs, gave both parents a kiss, got into my car and drove off to Sierra’s house to pick her up. Sierra has been a major part of my life; we’ve known each other since we were 5 and have been best friends ever since. She has caramel skin, ginger curly locs and the most beautiful round brown eyes and long lashes that frame her eyes and a slim-thick body. She made her way into the car and we drove off to school.

Just like any high school, mine was always buzzing with rumors and gossip of what had transpired over the break, word in these hallways were that the old-new girl killed herself, and even though I heard these rumors I never gave them credibility because rumors were spread about me too in my freshman year and I knew how badly they got twisted as they were passed from person to person especially since the old-new girl just moved to the next town over.

This was the day I first met Elijah, the new boy, he had golden brown skin, big dark, black eyes, brown medium-length hair and a lean, sculpted body. He was instantly friends with the popular kids. The only spare desk in our first period math class was next to mine. Sierra who was seated to my left mouthed “how hot is he?”, I mouthed back “you ma’am have a boyfriend”, she shrugged it off. I could barely bring myself to sneak in a few secret glances while he was preoccupied with the algebraic expressions which was explained on the board my Miss Abrahams. I finally understood what love at first sight was, but I couldn’t bring myself to utter a simple “hello” in his direction.

The bell rang to signify the end of the period, Sierra and I packed our bags and headed towards the door that led into the hallway before being stopped in our tracks by Justin, son of the city Major and Sierra’s boyfriend.

“So, ladies there’s a party at my house this Friday, my parents are out of town for the weekend, you should come” he said flipping his short, thick, black curly hair out of his face.

“Yeah, sure” I replied

The rest of the week went by pretty fast. Friday morning, I was awoken by a text from Sierra, it read “you wanna skip school and go do something fun?”, to which I replied “Dude! its literally still the first week of school and you want us to skip already?”, “Uh yeah, I steal a couple of notes from my mom’s surgery and it’ll look like we were sick” she texted,

“Ugh fine, as long as we don’t get caught. Meet me at my house in 40” I replied

I quickly got out of bed, brushed my teeth, did my skincare regimen and jumped into the shower. I threw my hair into a messy bun and wore my favorite white tank with black torn jeans and black 1460 Dr. Martens. By the time I headed downstairs, my parents were already gone. I made some oatmeal for breakfast and sat on the kitchen counter near the window so I could watch the sun rise while I ate.

Sierra texted me that she was outside, I headed out and locked the door behind me before heading to the baby blue Jeep Wrangler that was parked outside, Sierra got out to meet me half way, and said “Uh, I forgot to mention that we’d be skipping with Justin and Elijah since he’s new here we’ll be showing him around. Oh, by the way you’re sitting in the back with him”
