Chapter 1

Our story begins on a warm summer day in a neighborhood in Wyoming. The wind was softly blowing through the grass making it dance. Children playing with their friends under the trees and in the trees. The excitement of the children really brings life to the neighborhood. At the end of this street there lives a young boy, his name is Theodore. Theodore, who prefers to be called Theo, is also excited for this lovely day. Theo hopped out of bed this morning to see the bright sun smiling at him through his window. He ran into the kitchen where his grandmother sat waiting with an already prepared breakfast, sausage and eggs. “Good Morning Theo” she says chipperly with a smile. Theo smiled big at his grandmother, you should know that Theo doesn’t talk very much. Grandmother pats the seat next to her looking at Theo.

Theo sat down and began to chomp on his breakfast. As he wiped his face on his sleeve he headed for the front door. Grandmother stopped Theo in his tracks “haven’t you forgotten something?”. Theo peers over his shoulder with a confused look, she smiles and jesters for a kiss on the cheek. He springs over to her side and gives her a loving peck. Theo has kissed his grandmother’s cheek many mornings. In fact it’s a routine, her soft, warm, fuzzy cheek was something that comforted Theo. He smiles at her and then heads back for the door.

As he reaches the front yard the sun falls through the branches of the trees landing on his face. Making Theos green eyes almost look as if they were glowing. Theo looks around the neighborhood, looking for a fun way to spend his day. When suddenly the old blue denim blowing in the wind catches his eye. Across the street lives Miss Ruth, At her home lies a small garden. In that garden a scarecrow, to protect her veggies and fruits, lives on a stand. Theo sees the scarecrow withs its ragy clothes and hat knowing that it is out all hours of the day and night. The scarecrow seemed so unhappy having to guard fruits in the cold of night and the heat of summer. Theo sought to save and protect every scarecrow, so he made a plan to rescue that sad scarecrow.

Theo scouted Miss Ruth’s yard and noticed that her car wasn’t there. Miss Ruth’s red car with creaky doors was missing from the driveway. Theo’s face filled with glee knowing that the rescue would be much easier without her presence. Looking both ways before he ran across the street heading to Miss Ruth’s backyard. Theo climbed the fence into the lush garden that Miss Ruth had done so well with. Theo has known Miss Ruth for a while, he could tell her scratchy voice and bushy hair anywhere. She may be grouchy, but is very nice in her own way. Stepping over all the strawberries Theo decided to take one as a reward for his heroism. Once he reached the scarecrow he pulled a small red knife from his front pocket. Which he used to cut down the pawn in Miss Ruth’s garden games.

Theo threw the scarecrow, which he named Samuel, over his shoulder. He climbed over the fence with Samuel and bolted for his backyard. Theo carried Samuel to his Playhouse in the backyard, there is where he hid Samuel. Theo felt very similar to Sam in a sense, neither of them talked very much, or had many friends. Theo had made a new friend, he smiled from ear to ear knowing that he wasn’t alone. That he had a friend, his first friend in the neighborhood.

Samuel with his Tattered denim overalls and straw hat seemed to be perfect for Theos play mate.
