A mistress is in a long-term relationship with her attached lover, and is often referred to as the other woman.
A mistress is usually not considered a prostitute: while a mistress, if "kept", may, in some sense, be exchanging sex for money, the main difference is that a mistress has sex with fewer men.
There is usually an emotional relationship between a man and his mistress, however this does not mean the man will leave his wife or partner because of an emotional connection. It's because of that, that being a mistress may be considered the 'second option', thus not the priority in the man's life.
