Chapter 1: news
Odette sat at the head teachers desk trying to comprehend the news she was just told.
Just moments ago, she was sat in history like any other day when the deputy head came to take her out of class and into the heads office only to be told that her mother had overdosed. The news didn’t really phase her, it was a long time coming, seeming as her mother had been taking drugs and drinking alcohol on the daily since she was 8 years old.
The girl didn’t have much of a reaction, to all the teacher’s surprise. Odette had not really had a relationship with her mother since she’d started drinking when she was younger, although she had sought one out, the young 8-year-old wondering where her loving mother had all of a sudden disappeared too.
Of course, she’d been straight out denied that relationship with a slap to the face. Her mother didn’t tend to hit her often, mostly only a slap to the face or sometimes putting out her cigarettes on her, but nothing ever too drastic.
Now a days the most she interacted with her mother was when she had to remind her to pay the bills or get up for work. Her other may have been a major addict but had still managed to maintain a stable job that just allowed her to pay the bills. How though, was still a mystery to Odette.
The head teacher looked at the girl in front of her with shock written all over her face. How is she not having the slightest reaction to this? She thought to herself. If it where her in the 16-year-olds shoes she would have at least shed a tear or two.
“so, will I be going into care or...” Odette trailed off. The only thing playing in her mind at that moment was where she would end up. She knew they wouldn’t let a sixteen-year-old live on their own, and even if they miraculously let her, she knew she wouldn’t be able to maintain a job whilst also managing her schoolwork and onto of all that taking care of Clara.
Wait! Clara!
“what’s going to happen to Clara?! She can stay with me, right? You can’t take her away from me!” she exclaimed. Almost pleading at then end
The head teacher’s expression turned from one of shock to one of sympathy. She was well aware of the situation and of who Clara was. She thought it was amazing how much Odette just loved that little girl and couldn’t help the tiniest little sting of jealousy she felt at how much love that small girl would grow up with.
“no need to worry Odette I can assure you that Clara will indeed be staying with you.” Anyone could see the girl visibly relax, a little tension gone from her shoulders, the tiny sigh of relief that escaped from her mouth and how she slouched a little.
“thank you” she practically sighed out again “so where is it we will be staying?” if they were nor going into care, she could only come up with one slightly logical explanation too where they would be going. But she quickly dismissed er thoughts. They have not tried to contact me in 9 years. No way it could ever be them. Odette thought bitterly to herself. Although she could not deny that tiny little bit of hope that bit away at her heart that it would actually be them.
“well, some social workers took a look at your birth certificate, they found the name of your farther and tracked him down. He said he would be more than happy to take you in. when the matter of Clara was brought up, he seemed surprised but none the less agreed to take her in as well. So, you will both be going home with them today.
Your mother passed in the early hours of the morning so they were able to get down here so they could take you both home with them today.” the deputy explained calmly. She then gently tilted her head to the back of them room.
Odette gave her a questioning look then proceeded to turn her head towards the back of the room.
There stood, from what she could remember, her farther and oldest brother. How she hadn’t noticed them when she first walked in, she did not know. Perhaps she was just too wrapped up in her thoughts to take in her surroundings.
“hello Odette” Enzo her brother said, smiling at her warmly. Odette briefly mad eye contact with him before moving her gaze over to her father. His face too held a warm smile. One that Odette did not return to either of them, keeping her face as it was before.
“Enzo, Leonardo” she didn’t address her farther as dad. She couldn’t. he hadn’t been that to her in a long time. 9 years to be exact. But that didn’t stop her from noticing the look of hurt that flashed across his face. But as bad as it sounds, she couldn’t really bring herself to care. Shed worn that look too many times before. And she partially blamed him for that. Had he of just visited her once. Maybe only even a phone call and her life would’ve taken an entirely different turn. She wouldn’t have suffered the way she had, and she could’ve had a better childhood. Not forced to grow up and raise herself at the age of 8. She could’ve had a family.
But then, she thought, but then I wouldn’t have Clara. If she had had her dream childhood, then she wouldn’t have Clara. And she was so grateful for that little girl. That girl was her world, and she would do anything for her. She didn’t care about the unfortunate circumstances that had to of happened for Clara to even be here. She only cared about the little family that Clara had ultimately given her.
And that’s all she could ever ask for.
So that was the first chapter of A Bullet Through The Heart. I hope you like it! This is my first time writing a story purely from my imagination. Also, I’m happy for you guys to give me any constructive criticism, just don’t be too mean 🙂
Also, I know there’s a lot of brother books, but I have seen or read one that’s got a similar plot to this one yet so if there’s a book out there that is similar to this one it is purely a coincidence. Anyway, thank you for reading!
Peace out✌️
