Chapter 1: The attack

The day started out just like any other. My brother and I were playing at the playground after school; waiting for our mom to come pick us up. I was on the swings when it happened. My brother, Eli was pushing the swing for me as I yelled “higher! Higher!” It was another stormy day in our smallish village so we didn’t think much of the rain that was pouring down on us until the tornado came. It wasn’t like a normal tornado that we would hide from in a cellar, it seemed scarier but at the time I didn’t know why. We ran as fast as we could while Eli was pulling me along, he was older than me by 2 years so he was always trying to protect me and this time I was grateful. “Where’s mom?” I yelled over the loud noise of the only school I ever knew getting destroyed and thrown all over the place. “I don’t know but we need to get to the storm cellar!” Eli yelled back. We got to the closest cellar we could find and huddled into the corner farthest from the door. “Eli, I’m scared” I said as I clinged onto my brother. “I know, we are going to -“ Eli started to respond as the cellar door flung open with a loud crash. He ran over to try and close it back up

when the tornado took him. It was almost like the tornado stopped to grab him. It may have just been the fear coursing through my veins but I could have sworn I saw some kind of hand. It didn’t seem human. “ELI!!” I screamed and cried. I started to get up and run after him when I tripped over some lose stone on the ground and hit my head. Everything felt weird and blurry until all I saw was my own tears until I passed out.
