Chapter 1: So you think you can play?
-Mari-
Not so surprisingly my day started out with an awful video game. Maybe it was a warning, a warning that my brother needed a guide to better video game purchases.
“Holy fuck this game was awful.”
I slowly set my controller down in silence a scowl on my face as I bit my lip. Very carefully I moved my fox tail into my lap, however, no matter how much I tried not to get fur on the comforter I couldn’t help but notice a few long, white, fuzzy hairs sticking to the fabric.
“Mari...why didn’t you warn me before we played this thing?” Evan practically pleaded, his white fox ears twitching frantically behind his small black horns.
I slowly turned to my twin both of my hands raised before I began to use sign language because my phone wasn’t in reach. “I did warn you. I said that it was Duke Nukem Forever! And do you remember what you said that the box art looked cool so that we should buy it!” I signed exasperated.
“I know but-”
“No exceptions, I specifically told you do not buy that piece of shit I’m pretty sure it’s banned all around the world!” I snapped.
A scowl crossed his face then he smirked slightly. “Wait, how can it be banned all around the world if people barely live in the north pole, did the seals undulate themselves all the way to the UN to complain? I don’t think-”
“Shut it! You know what I mean!”
“I-I thought you were joking or overreacting. I honestly didn’t expect something like that, I’m a guy and I’m definitely a tits guy-”
“Gross,” I answered quickly making sure he saw my hands.
“However that alien scene was just weird and gross. There’s sexy tentacle anime porn then there’s whatever we saw,” Evan grumbled.
My eyes narrowed and I let out a small soft sigh, I crawled across my bed and grabbed my phone off of the nightstand.
“Evan I swear to god that you better not be getting a boner on my bed!” I typed the voice from the phone causing Evan to flinch as it emitted an ear-splitting yell.
Evan scowled at me before he let out a sigh. “Of course not you idiot. Besides like I told you that game was just disgusting.” He mumbled as he leaned down and reached into the GameStop bag on the floor, after a moment or two of rustling through the bag he let out a relieved sounding sigh. “Thank god I kept the receipt.”
Evan climbed off of my bed before looking back at me. “Do you want anything? I’m gonna ask dad about dinner before we go to Gamestop to return this,” he informed me.
I nodded as I raised my hands. “Yeah, can you bring me some soda I’m thirsty? I’ll get the game and meet you downstairs,” my hands were relaxed, my tone calm.
Evan let out a snort his ears twitching briefly as a warm smile spread across his face. “Sure thing Mari.”
When he left I got up off of my bed and went over to my Playstation that sat on the tv stand, as I was ejecting the disk my new school uniform caught my eye, its royal blue color practically shining beneath the sunlight that streamed in through the curtain. I frowned as I laid my tail across my feet scrutinizing it through the lens of my glasses.
Tomorrow, I’ll be in school, a new school with no one besides Evan to help. I’ll have to use my phone but then again people will more than likely just leave me alone because they’ll think I’m deaf or they’ll realize I’m a siren and run away.
I bit my lip as I reached out and grabbed my blazer holding it out in front of me. My uniform was a bit large, because I was a pudgy girl, not fat, not obese but pudgy or rather plump. I scowled as I looked down at my tail.
Since there are school uniforms, they probably don’t allow piercings or brightly colored hair, but my hair is so dark it should cover up the royal blue I put in it.
I frowned as I twisted one of my wavy, shiny, black, locks between my fingers practically yanking my hair up to my eyes so that I could find the royal blue I’d dyed in it.
Fuck, if I can’t find it then they definitely won’t.
“Mari! Are you ready to go yet?” Evan called up to me.
Since I couldn’t yell back I instead stomped one foot twice. A moment later I heard his laughter drift upstairs. With my phone and the awful game in hand, I went downstairs.
My dad was in the kitchen filling out paperwork for his job. The moment I came down though he looked up his vibrant, violet eyes settling as they looked at me. One of his hands rested in his currently frizzy black hair his small horns almost impossible to find in them. He was a male siren which meant that his voice was practically useless. He couldn’t enchant nor could he entrap.
I tucked my phone into my pocket and smiled. “Hi dad, how was your day?” I asked as I opened my arms for a hug at the end of my signing. Evan handed me a can of soda which I shoved in the pocket of my hoodie.
He let out a chuckle as he got up and came over to us using one hand to fix his black locks. “Did you kids have fun with your video games?” He asked as he wrapped both of us in his arms.
“Absolutely not dad, in fact, I’m convinced that Satan himself made it!” Evan told him looking utterly disgusted as the fur on his ears bristled.
I felt my dad’s chest rumble as he laughed before he pulled away. “So I’m guessing you’re returning it?” He asked in between bouts of laughter.
“Yup,” Evan answered as I nodded.
“Have fun then, and be careful on the road, no phone, and hands-free devices when necessary. I love you both,” dad told us a warm smile on his face.
I stood on my tiptoes and gave him a kiss on the cheek before I followed Evan out to the car.
Since the nearest Gamestop was twenty minutes away I took my 3DS out of my purse. Every now and then I would take a sip of my soda before returning it to the cup holder. The soft yet familiar Pokémon theme echoed out of my handheld console, the sound washing over me almost like a warm blanket as my body tingled and I smiled slightly.
“What are you playing Mari?” Evan muttered as he ran a hand over his neck.
“Detective Pikachu,” I answered slowly as I used one hand to sign.
“Is it fun?” He asked softly the car was stopped at a red light and Evan was tapping one finger on the steering wheel. The soft tapping of his finger kept time with the blinker of the car. Strangely enough, it was a pretty quiet night in the distance I could hear the soft sound of crickets outside of the window. A small rustling sound reached my ears as my tail brushed up against the interior of the car.
I nodded a smile on my face. “I like it, it’s really colorful and fun. It may be an easy detective game at times but it is good.”
Evan’s ears drooped for a moment seemingly bored as he drove before perking up. “Wanna talk more about our new school? Even though I went with dad to the open house I still barely know anything about it.”
I scowled and adjusted my glasses slightly. “What was it like? Prestigious? Snotty? Regular? A Dump?” I asked quickly my curiosity getting the best of me.
“Oh yeah because if your school’s a dump it’s really exciting. Oh, my god, Becky look it’s trash! Hey, Susan, do you wanna play dog shit frisbee, or maybe we could act like nature’s trash bandits!” He mumbled rolling his eyes.
I gently slapped his arm which caused him to smirk slightly. Then he let out a sigh and shrugged. “Well, it did look pretty nice and clean. It’s not a boarding school or anything but definitely really nice looking.” He told me.
“I just hope I can get my uniform over my horns.” I signed before letting out a soft sigh and slumping slightly.
I love and hate these horns they’ve ripped some of my favorite clothes.
Evan glanced at me before he carefully reached over and ran a finger up one of my horns which curved upwards. “You could always cut them down and trim them like I do, there is literally no reason for you to keep them that way,” he reminded me.
Moments later my face turned red and I looked down practically burying my face in my tail. “I really like them though, mom said that dad used to have long horns too,” I told him as I signed quickly.
Evan let out a small snort. “If you keep growing out your horns people will mistake you for a troll,” he said letting out a snicker.
I punched him in his side with slightly more force which caused him to flinch. “If you keep moving your ears like that someone is going to mistake you for a werewolf.” I countered smilingly slightly.
“These are fox ears, how will people mistake me for a werewolf?” Evan practically demanded as he parked the car I could hear him trying to contain his laughter.
I sat up, looked my brother in the eye, and raised my hands before signing very carefully and precisely.“Mom gets mistaken for a Kitsune all the time, and with how moody you are what’s to stop people from getting your Myth species wrong?” I demanded.
Evan’s eyes went wide as he looked at me, then he pressed his lips together his face turning red, but instead of bursting out into a fit of laughter he just let out a bunch of high-pitched giggles. His fox ears twitched quickly, he turned away from me took a deep breath then turned back. “Are you coming in?” He asked as he turned the car off and climbed out.
I nodded and followed my brother into GameStop. Since it was late there was a larger line at the counter because for some reason everyone always waits till the last minute to return everything, while Evan returned the game I looked around for a better one, eventually, I ended up at the Nintendo switch display. I picked up one of the joy-cons and was about to select the Rayman Legends demo when someone else picked up the second Joy-con.
I looked at the guy, he was an Asian Myth that looked around my age. Slightly long black hair that fell over his shoulders, his bangs were in his face hiding his eyes as he briefly looked down at his controller. I noticed a slim, white, almost shiny tail with a triangle tip swishing around. As he turned his head slightly his glowing, strangely dark blue eyes met mine the color was like looking at someone shining a light from beneath the ocean and I couldn’t help but notice two different little glints the silver ring on his lip, and the hoop earring in his left ear that had a small dangling cross on the end of it.
An incubus Myth? Probably a mixed one.
“I...I hope you don’t mind a second player,” he asked softly in a hesitant tone.
I shook my head and instantly went to grab my phone from my pocket but found both of them empty, it didn’t take a moron to realize that I had left all my stuff in the car.
Well fuck!
We both turned our attention back to the game, there was silence between us however in a strange way we were communicating through the game. Our characters were only a few steps behind each other as we climbed the level to the tune of the music using parachuting frogs. We rode the violent wind, slid on ginormous tree branches like water slides, glided through the air like doves while narrowly avoiding curling vines the color of bamboo that had thorns like spikes. So when we finally reached the end of the level and our characters began dancing on that golden altar I couldn’t help but let out a giggle. Around us were the shuffling of feet and the laughing of excited children.
The guy looked at me with a small smile on his face, “You’re pretty good at this level, I always have trouble timing the music to the jumping on the frogs because of how slow they descend when they parachute. But thanks to you I was able to keep pace.”
I scowled a slight amount of blush on my face from how excited I was.
Well, fuck me for leaving
my phone behind. But I will admit that this was a hard level even for me. How...do I talk to him though? Well, I guess could try sign language on him to see if he understands just in case.
ughter.
