The Windsors

Even though Ziyah Windsor was the oldest sister of all the Windsors, she wasn’t at all spoiled or the favorite. in fact, she was the least favorite and the most frowned-upon.

“Ziyah, get up here this instant!” Quiana Windsor’s voice could carry for miles because it was so loud. “why did you cut the cord of the chandelier?”

“Mom, that wasn’t me!” Ziyah yelled back. “it was probably my brother or sisters!”

“If you don’t come here, then I’m coming there!” Quiana yelled. "And I know you don’t want me up there right now!”

glass shattered and Quiana shouted at Wafa, Xana and Yar, Ziyah’s little sisters and brother.

“Wafa started it!” Yar, Ziyah’s little brother screamed.

“No, Xana made me eat the worm first!” Wafa yelled.

“But Yar poured the bucket of water on my head first!” Xana shouted.

round and round the blame went, until Ziyah heard Quiana’s footsteps stomping up the stairs.

“Ziyah!”

Ziyah panicked that Quiana was coming and quickly hid the book that she was reading under the covers of her bed just as Quiana came into the room.

“what are you doing under your sheets?” she asked.

“oh, I’m looking for my Pathfinder,” Ziyah replied. “I lost it a few days ago and haven’t stopped looking for it since.”

“well that’s most unfortunate,” Quiana said. “But I see your pathfinder on your nightstand. What were you really doing?”

Ziyah sighed and inside cursed herself for being so dumb. “I was...”

when she didn’t say any more, Quiana glared at her. “I asked you, what were you doing?”

Ziyah sighed again and lifted up her covers. they both leaned over to see the book that had just been revealed. A Beginner’s Guide To Manifesting An Ability, the cover read.

“Ziyah, how many times do I have to tell you, you are only a level one in foxfire, and only two people have manifested abilities!”

Ziyah looked at her floor. “I know, but I just feel like... I don’t know, that I need to have an ability by now, and that if I don’t get one, that the world will basically not want me any more, and then I’ll just be... forgotten.”

“you’ll never be forgotten,” Quiana said softly. Ziyah looked up at her and saw a look that she never saw her mother use before. Love.

Quiana glanced at the clasp holding Ziyah’s cape together, the Windsor family crest; a golden infinity symbol inside of a golden heart surrounded by two golden wings. The crest was made to show how the Windsors never stopped having love for the Elvin world or something like that. Ziyah never really paid attention to that type of stuff.

but then her scowl returned. “you’re grounded for two weeks.”

Ziyah groaned. “but I was just reading a book!”

“Yes, and if you were a parent and knew what I knew about you, then you would keep your child locked up safely in her bedroom. now I am going to go make dinner, and you’ll find it in your room in five minutes.”

Quianna was a Charger and a Shade, which meant that she could control lightning and shadows, but one thing that she wasn't was a conjurer. Ziyah couldn't think of how she would be able to send her dinner up to her room without that ability.

she stomped out of Ziyah’s room and made her way down the shimmering crystal stairs.

now that Ziyah was alone in her room, she could start reading again. Quiana wouldn’t want her to, and she could come into her room any minute yelling at her. then she would really be in trouble.

That’s when Ziyah had an idea. she would go to her friend Talliah’s house. she could have a sleepover there, and she would be safe. then she realized... she was running away from her home.
