Chapter One
Present day…..
She thought she had everything she ever dreamt of, but sitting at the therapist’s office, she came to the heavy realization that everything had been a sham…….
Two years ago….
“I don’t care about what you or any other person think about my choice of who to marry, it’s my life and I get to decide what I do with it” Emily said to her dad. They had been on this topic since she brought home the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with, Her dad had taken an instant disliking to him but Emily was having none of it. “ I don’t know what he did to you, but Josh is a nice guy and I’m not going to give him up because of your ridiculous assumption about him, I’m going to marry him whether you like it or not” she ranted.
Her dad’s face was tight with anger as he replied “okay then, I now know I make ridiculous assumptions, but mark my words, the day you marry that boy, I will no longer acknowledge you as my daughter, and I hope you will come to your senses very soon”.
Present day……
Emily sat huddled in a corner of her therapist’s office with a cup of coffee in hand and looked up at her saying “you know, Susan I should have listened to him”. Susan gave her a sympathetic nod and gestured for her to continue.
Two years ago……
Emily went ahead and got married to Fred – her fiancé; the wedding was a small ceremony because her dad, brothers and other family members refused to attend. Her dad even went as far as cutting her off and removing her from his will. With all these new developments, Emily and Fred had to struggle to keep body and soul together, she worked three different jobs and came home in the evening to take care of chores. Most times, she would be very tired and had drifted off to sleep without doing anything, keeping the house clean and tidy became a real struggle.
Fred, as usual was still a supportive husband, he encouraged her and always grabbed any opportunity to profess his undying love for her. “You need to stop overworking and relax Em, you cannot continue to torture yourself live this” he said to her one fateful evening as they sat by the fireside after another long and exhausting day of work. “I know Fred, and I promise to relax, I know you will be by my side, won’t you?” she asked. “You know I love you and you have my word that I will always be beside you, cross my heart and hope to die”. He stated with a tone of finality.
They continued like this for the next few months, their finance was becoming balanced and the struggle was minimized. Fred continued to be supportive and showered love on her in every possible way. Everything was calm and serene but she never knew it was the calm before the great storm.
