Chapter 1

I lay alone in my room listening to the soft snoring of my cat, Misfit. There are wet spots on my sheets from tears that have escaped my eyes in the last half hour. I just came home from school. The hell that contains me in it’s grip, that has not hint of letting go anytime soon.

My phone lays next to me, it’s not like I’m going to get a text or call because I haven’t had a friend in two years. I have somewhat survived that hell alone, not that it bothers me any. I mean it’s not like I get picked on, fuck I’m lucky for somebody to look in my direction.

My phone rings, I’m startled by the sound, it has been a long time since I heard that sound. I want to charish it forever, but I have to pick it up, I need human contact with somebody who isn’t my parents.

“Hello?” My hoarse voice mumbles. I haven’t heard my own voice in a while considering my parents are out of town, they’ve been gone for a week. I figured why the hell bother talking if nobody talks to me.

“Good afternoon ma’am, do you happen to be Ms. Adelyn Black?" His voice is soft and kind. It's like honey drizzling onto a fresh baked biscuit.

"Yes. Who are you?" My voice wakes up Misfit. He struts over to me and curls up in my lap. "I'm the leader of the San Diego police force. Your parents were pronounced dead at 2:37 am on December 23. They got into a car accident and were in the hospital for two days. They both died of internal bleeding. Now since you're only 15 I'm obligated to ask you if you have any immediate family located around you."

Tears stream down my face. I seem to have lost my voice but I manage to get out "Yes sir. My aunt lives in Chicago, it's not close I know but she is the only family member I can think of." My voice cracks every couple words. "Thank you. We will be sending you a plane ticket and money for a cab. It will most likely be there in a couple days. The plane is scheduled for Friday." He seems genuinely sorry. "Thank you sir."

I throw my phone at my wall I scream at the top of my lungs, I punch a hole in the wall. I storm downstairs and grab all the booze in the house and take them back upstairs. "Time to forget, Misfit, time to forget"
