A Sprinkle of Change
BAM! The crash of metal on tile resounded through the room as the door swung open and pure rage flew into the room.
How did she find out? I’d been careful to hide it from everyone until we were ready to announce it together.
The little sprinkle of happiness and pride I had found solace in was ripped away when she threw my notebook at my face. I quickly ducked and it sailed right into a beaker on the shelf to my left. Glass tinkled to the ground as pages of five years’ worth of joint research danced around the lab like genetically enhanced snow while my partner went on a rampage.
“You’re supposed to be my best friend. How could you work with that arrogant bastard after all he put me through?!”
How was I supposed to tell her that the world did not revolve around her, especially not when scientific advancement was involved? Prior experience taught me that was a short trip to a further tantrum. Oh well, might as well be direct.
“I can work with him if it means we can cure hereditary birth defects in embryos. This did not concern your relationship or lack thereof with the man. Now stop this and calm-down.”
Ignoring any type of personal space, she got in my face and poked me hard in the chest with a sharp, well-manicured nail. “Don’t tell me to calm down, heifer. You wouldn’t have hid this from me if you didn’t think I’d be upset.”
“I never hid it, just didn’t share it. There’s a difference. It was never relevant to our conversations.”
“There goes the android again,’ she remarked exasperatedly, throwing her hands up in the air. “Call me when Morganna returns!” A flourish of sun-kissed hair nearly whipped me in the face as she turned and exited my lab in a whirlwind similar to the one she entered in.
Maybe my mother was right to tell people she gave birth to a brilliant robot that walked around in the skin of a human. Oh well, that is a matter to contemplate on another day. Now I have to organize the mess left in my lab partner/best friend (maybe ex-best friend for now)’s wake.
Potential Nobel Prize Winners don’t accomplish anything with papers strewn all over their lab.
