Everly

"This is where our story begins!" Cassidy exclaimed.

"Okay, I'm happy you're excited and all, but come help me with the boxes." I said, struggling to pick up one of the heavier boxes. Cassidy and I moved out of our old town, and we finally moved to New York like we always wanted to when we were little.

"Holy shit..." Cassidy mumbled. “I can’t believe we finally did it….”

As we both carry in the last few boxes out of the moving truck into our apartment I notice a couple arguing. I don’t wanna be nosy so I just left it alone. After placing the last box on the floor I sit next to it. “That should be the last box.” I said as Cassidy walked out of her room.

“Okay I think I’m going to start getting my boxes unpacked, and then head to bed for the night.” She answers back.

I do the same, but I only open the ones that are labeled “Open first!” on it. Opening the first box I reach in and grab my blankets, pillows, and pjs for tonight. I’m not worried about my bed tonight, I'll set it up tomorrow. “Shit my first day at the office is tomorrow.” I say under my breath. I walk off and head into my room.

I slip off my light blue tee shirt and jeans, and slip into my pjs and head off to bed.

I wake up the next morning to the aroma of coffee from the other room. “Hey babe!” Cassidy said with a smile on her face.
“You look happy this morning.” I said in response. She turns around and hands me coffee in my favorite mug.
“Can I just not be happy in the morning?” she said with a scowl.
“No, something happened. So what happened?” I challenged taking in the first sip of my coffee.
“Fine. I went out this morning to get coffee grounds.” she stopped.
“Oh my god what?” I say out of anticipation.
“Well as I’m checking out this guy comes up, and he offered to pay for it.” she added.
“A guy offered to pay for coffee beans, and that’s why you’re happy this morning?” I replied. She rolls her eyes and sits down beside me.
“Yes and it was a nice thing to do. It made my day better.” she replied with a scowl.
“The day has barley started.”
“I know but still it’s a new city and-“
“It’s fine I get it.” I laughed.

I got a publishing offer from one of my moms friends. They ended up finding the book I was writing, and she said I have talent. When I got a call the next day from a woman named Lory she told me to meet up with her. The interview went well and she moved me down here. I asked if I could take Cassidy and she said yes. So here we are.
Setting my mug into the sink I leave her alone and walk into my room. I shuffle over to my windows to open it and feel the morning air. God it feels nice.
“Hey Everly!” Cassidy shouts out.
“I’m going to get breakfast from the cute bakery down the street. Want anything?”
“No Im fine for now!” I call out answering her.
I hear the door close and I head back over to the window. I peer over the fire escape and I see the same couple arguing like yesterday. I don’t wanna eavesdrop but I couldn’t help it.

“I can’t fucking stand you!” a short blonde cried.
“Then leave, I'm done fucking dealing with you and your shit!” This time a man with brown hair shouts, towering over her.
She stomps off and I stay there for a second seeing if she comes back. All of a sudden he glances up at me and I freeze. He scowls then stomps inside.
I scurry back inside my room and shut the window.

I look around to see if I can find the box with all of my clothes in it but I struggle to find it. Damnit. I walk around the place to see if Cass took it by accident into her room, but it’s not there. Maybe I left it in the car. I walk over and put my slippers on. I grab my keys and I head to the car. As I open the door I see my box labeled, “Everlys clothes!” As I reach in to grab it I hear something bang on the hood of my car.

I bounce up and the guy from earlier is standing there. He has a scowl on his face. “Can I help you?” I inquire.
“Actually you can.” he pauses waiting for me to respond.
“You can mind your own fucking business.” he demands. My face feels hot.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop. I was just out getting some fresh air-” I said looking up at him as he cuts me off.
“What’s your name?” he asks.
“Everly Scott, and you?”
“Justin.”
“You don’t have a last name?” I add.
“I do. ” He says with a smirk on his face.
He turns and walks into the building. What the hell I didn’t even do anything wrong. What a dick. I reach and grab my box and leave. I walk up the stairs to get to my apartment, and I hear a deep voice coming from next door.

“Yeah I talked to her. Hopefully that’s the last time I have to run into her.” I realize that it was Justin talking, but I hurry and unlock my door.
I don’t want to ever see him again. He could have at least been nice about it. I scurry to my bedroom and open the box. I pull out a pair of skinny jeans and baby pink tee shirt. It’s my first day in the office. I don’t know what to wear, but I think this should be good enough.

I walk to the bathroom and pull my hair up into a messy bun. I pull out a few strands to frame my face then grab my makeup. I don’t really know how to do makeup. I just stick to the basics. I apply a little mascara and a clear lip gloss. I lightly apply some peach tone blush and I’m done. Grabbing my favorite body spray I spritz a little around my body.

I walk out to put on some nude color heels and breakfast and I'm on my way. As I walk out of the building I take in the beauty of the city. I wouldn’t have imagined in a million years I would be here today. I start to walk when I see this cute little coffee shop just next door. I realized I just had coffee, but I’m a caffeine addict.
Walking in I could tell that it’s pretty old. It has this sage green wallpaper with cute little white tables and chairs. “Hey what can I get started for you today?” The lady behind the counter asked.
“I will have a-” I stop and look at the menu.
“I’ll have the cold brew caramel latte.” I answer with a smile.
“One cold brew caramel latte coming up. I’ll bring it right over when it’s ready.” she replied.
I walk over and sit over and the table by the window. I look down and check my phone to see that Cass texted me.
Cass: Hey what are you up to right now?
Me: I just went to grab a coffee at the place next door then I'm going to the office.

A few seconds go by before I get an answer. Cass never waits to respond.
Cass: Okay I’m going to walk around and see what there is around here.
Me: Okay be safe. Don’t get kidnapped.<3

Just as I reply he walks in. Justin. I hope he doesn’t say shit to me like yesterday

The blonde lady walks over to me with my coffee. “Here is one cold brew caramel latte.” she says a little to loudly.

All of a sudden I feel Justin’s eyes heavy on me. I try to move to get up but I feel stuck. Anxiety is being a bitch to me right now. I try not to look up and just focus on my phone, but he comes up to me.
“So I see you are already getting used to the city.” he says.
“Well I rather get used to it here sooner or later.” I scowl.
“Hey no need to have an attitude.”
I roll my eyes and look back down at my phone. He doesn’t have to be such a douchebag. I notice that he sits down right in front of me.
“Can I help you?” I try to hide the bitchiness in my voice, but I think he noticed.
“I didn’t know I couldn’t sit and enjoy coffee.” He winks.

Whatever but I’m not talking to him. I still feel his green eyes burning into me. I look up and catch his gaze. We hold eye contact. He looks down and my lips and back up into my eyes. My heart starts to race. Stop it Everly, just get up and walk out.

Before I can stand he starts to lean over the table. My face becomes heated. He parts his lips and he leans over to me. He’s inches from my face now. He leaned into my ear.
“Guess I’ll see you around, huh?” he whispers.
Before I get the chance to say something he walks out.
