Chapter 1

"Help"

I look around for the source of the shrill voice note that indicates distress or a call for help.

"Help"

Grabbing my dagger as I start swimming towards the coral reef from where the sound is coming from. I see a young mermaid with ruby locks fighting against a fishing net.

“Stay still” I command and quickly release her from the net with the help of my dagger.

“Aren’t you supposed to be at Mer school right now? And don’t you know that young mermaids aren’t allowed to venture so close to the surface! What would you have done if I wasn’t on border patrol today?”

“I’m sorry warrior ,I was just looking for Zippy...he escaped when I wasn’t looking” she replies with her head down pointing at the seahorse.

“What’s your name young one?”

“Ember” she replies. Her name does justice to her beautiful red locks, while I have freaky long greyish white hair that is impossible to keep out of my way.

“I’m Merlia , you can call me Lia, now Ember you better hurry to Mer school before I drag you there myself, and make sure to keep an eye on Zippy this time”

“Okay!” she replies bobbing her head excitedly, mostly because she didn’t get in any trouble and swims back towards the pod.

Swimming around the reef I decide to swim one last round before my patrol ends. Why is a high warrior like me stuck on patrol duty? Well probably because I prefer swimming around the reef compared to being stuck in that cave, but that doesn’t mean I can skip any of it, I got to get both jobs done, patrol ,defense lessons, surveillance of our security etc. If it’s so much work why do I do it? Mainly because I enjoy it most of the time, it’s a huge honor and it allows me to have the privilege of handling with really cool weapons.

“Sierra, I’m back where are you?” I ask looking around our cove for my younger sister. I grab my trident and decide to go look around when I couldn’t find her anywhere.

Swimming around her favorite reef, I call out her name

“Sierra”

“Lia! Help! Lia!”

I swim towards the sound of her voice as fast as my tail could carry me and halted suddenly taking in the scene before me.

I could feel the blood drain out of my face as I tried to process this situation.
