Prologue
“Oh my, you look beautiful dear.” My future mother in law coos.
“Do you really think so?” I asked nervously. Today is the day I’ve been waiting for my whole life. It’s finally here and it’s all real. I still can’t believe this is happening.
I Dorothea Harper is getting married to the love of my life.
“Yes honey, he would hardly keep his eyes of you.” She says holding my shaking hands in her warm ones.
I look into the mirror and see my reflection. I look like a princesses. I feel like one too.
“Oh Dora you look wonderful.” Midge says adjusting her dress. “Put a little more lipstick on.”
“So it would leave a stain on his lip when the kiss?” Shelly asked.
“Well that’s the idea.” Midge says sitting down on a chair. “So all those hungry bitches would know he is taken when they glance at him in the reception.”
I giggle at her statement. Midge and Shelly have been my best friends since preschool, we all grew up together. No one was able to come between us.
“There are a lot of hot snacks in there.” Mia says entering the room. She is my maid of honor, I was going to chose between Midge or Shelly but once I met her I knew it had to be her. We hated each other, well she hated the fact I was dating her brother. She thought I was only dating him for money but later realized that is was because I loved him.
“Mia, you have a husband who is going to be standing beside Ethan” I point out
“I know that and I love him but when I see a hot guy I don’t hesitate to praise them.” She walks up to me and pull’s me in a hug. “I can’t wait for you to be my sister.”
“Hey, Mia” Shelly calls out making Mia turn to her. “Was any of the hot snacks single?”
“Why? I thought you were dating Todd.” I asked.
“We broke up.” She sighs. “He was cheating.”
“Oh my God.” I whisper walking to her. “When did this happen?”
“A few days ago.” She shrugged.
“And why didn’t you tell me?” I say looking at her in the eyes so she wouldn’t lie.
“You were so excited about the wedding and I couldn’t bring myself to ruin your mood.” She says looking down and I wrap my arms around her
“You could have told me.” Midge say joining the hug.
“Or me.” Mia says.
“Or even me.” Grace says. “I’m older and could give you an advice.”
“You were all so happy.” Shelly pulls away from the hug. “I didn’t want to ruin the mood.”
“It doesn’t matter dear.” Grace says walking towards us. “Whether we are happy or not you tell us what’s bothering you.”
“Thanks guys.” She say crying.
“That’s what best friends are for.” I say with tears at the brim of my eyes. She didn’t want me to be sad at all so she hid this from us, me.
“Please stop crying, you’ll both ruin your makeup.” Midge says.
“Shut up.” Mia say. “Let them both pour out their sadness.”
“I’m not sad. I’m anything but sad. I am happy. Very happy. To have two best friends who love me so much. A sister who adores me. A mother who care for me and I’m getting married to the man of my dreams. Why should I be sad. I’m happy. These are happy tears.” I say through my sobs.
“Aww.” They all coo and all come for another hug.
“Thank God we use the waterproof makeup.” Midge sighs a sigh of relief making us all laugh.
I look at the clock and see the time. It’s almost time. I pull away from the hug and start to pace around. I feel the nervousness kick in.
“Calm down.” Shelly says. “Everything would be fine.”
“What if he changes his mind?” I asked.
“I’ve seen the way my son looks at you, he wouldn’t change his mind.” Grace says calming me down.
“Now come one we have one thing remaining.” Mia pulls me to the mirror and climbs a stool.
“What?” I asked staring at myself.
“Your veil.” She whispers and puts it on my head smiling down at me. “There we go Mrs. King.”
“Thank you.” I smile at her watching her come down and adjusting her hair do.
The doors suddenly open wide.
“David.” Mia walks up to her husband and pulls him in for a kiss.
“Hi, babe.” He greets. I see his troubled face and instantly knew something was wrong.
“Why are you here?” Midge asked.
“Is everything okay?” I asked worriedly. “Is Ethan okay?”
“I need you to calm down Dorothy.” He says to me.
“What is it? What happened.” Grace asked.
“Ethan didn’t show up.” He said looking at me with sympathy
I felt my heart drop as fresh tears rolled down my face.
“What? Why is he okay.?” Shelly asked.
“We suspected something was wrong so we went to his apartment but he wasn’t there.” He continued.
I felt my heart shattered into a million pieces. Someone wrapped their arm around me but I didn’t care who it was.
“I’m so sorry dear.” I hear Grace croaky voice. “I’m so sorry Dorothy.”
Midge and Shelly both came to calm me down but nothing could ever calm me down Ethan left.
Did even love me? Wasn’t I enough? Did he finally find someone better than me? I thought he loved me.
“Are you sure he wasn’t there? Did you check every room?” Mia asked her husband.
“Yeah, all he things where gone too.” David sighed.
“Why weren’t you with him?” Mia shouted at her husband. “All those groom’s men why weren’t you all with him. I can’t believe it.”
“I was with Jojo.” He snapped. “We all agreed to meet up at Jacob’s this morning but he didn’t show up.”
Midge and Shelly said comforting words to me, Mia was shouting at her husband, Grace was calling her husband and I was numb. The tears didn’t stop flowing but I inside me was numb.
This is the day that I Dorothea Harper is broken beyond repair and nothing can ever fill the void in my heart.
