Captive

Sadie gazed at her bedroom ceiling. She traced the cracks with her eyes. Her lamp gave of an eerie glow in her dark room. With her hands over her stomach, she breathed in and out.

The door to the old house slammed open, the floor creaking as mother shuffled about. Faint crying echoed in the hallways as mother rustled around the cabinets, cursing under her breath.

Sadie shifted her legs to the edge of the bad and stood up. Nails and excess wood pieced her skin. The stairs creaked and groaned under her soles. The sound of chains clanked in the kitchen.

The ripped couch was infested with insects and beneath the floors was rats and spiders. The walls were torn as they always had been and the windows were covered with rotted planks. In the dim light Sadie could make out her mother's silhouette. The floor was littered with trash and red stains on the carpet.

"You're not usually this messy, mother," Sadie said, bending down and lightly touching the ground. She put her finger up to her lips. Her mouth was immediately met with a familiar taste. Metallic, yet sweet. With her mother working as an assassin, she knew the taste of blood anywhere.

Sadie was her mother's assistant, her hidden daughter. She knew her place.

Mother whipped her head around, her raven-black hair a blur.

She strided forward, slapping her daughter across the face. Her cheek quickly darkened into a bruise, becoming numb.

"Only speak when you are spoken to," mother hissed, her sharp grey eyes shining with annoyance.

"Yes, ma'am," Sadie mumbled, rising to her feet.

She stormed back to the kitchen, and all Sadie could make out was 'little bitch'.

"The captive is in the closet. Take him downstairs."

She glanced over and a sob escaped from the enclosed space. Slowly, the door creaked open to reveal a cage with a little boy trapped in it.

He was a scrawny child, around eight years old. Dirt covered his face and knees, tears leaving clean streak across his cheeks. With his calves hugged to his chest, he shivered violently. He had ghostly pale skin and his dirty blonde hair was moist with his own blood. His hands shook while he covered his face, fingernails chipped and bleeding.

He didn't deserve this.

But she knew that if she didn't do mother's bidding, she would end up just like him. Scared, trapped and alone.

Sadie pushed her thin glasses up, wiping sweat from the bridge of her nose. She breathed slowly, inhaling the eerie scent of her medical mask. Her tools were set out in front of her, neat and organized.

The fluorescent light shone overhead, glowing in the darkness of the basement. Sadie rolled up her sleeves, feeling the coldness of the stone floor under her.

The boy lay on a stretcher, his skinny hands and feet chained. He looked around wildly, his pale blue eyes panicked.

His eyes landed on Sadie.

"Wh-what are you going t-to do..."

"Nothing serious."

Her yellow-orange eyes pierced through him.

"Yet."

Gallandro7: Theoretically this is a trilogy, but this was a perfect solo story. I truly wish it had ended before it became too much. That's a personal opinion. The first book was amazing.
