The hot August air rushes through, as four bikes cut through it like butter. The black bike ahead of them all, the owner not even paddling because there’s no use. The orange bike not far behind tries to catch its predecessor. The white bike trying hard to catch the orange bike, but it seems no matter how hard she pedals, the bike can’t go any faster. As for the pink bike, it is just having a nice stroll, paying no mind to the three ahead moving hastily towards one destination.
They reached a park quickly, The black, orange, and white bike all seem to arrive nearly at the same time. The bikes are tossed aside as the owners rush towards a single tree. The pink bike is placed down softly, as it’s owner walks slowly towards the same tree.
A 5 foot five boy with curly hair as black as his eyes, with skin as dark as caramel, but seems to be darker because of the August heat, is the first to the tree. Not far behind him a 5 foot eight boy, with orange hair to match his bike, and freckles to put the whole look together, reaches the tree immediately after. A girl with long blonde hair, and green eyes. No taller than 5 foot three, reaches the tree a little bit after the red haired boy. As a brunette with blue eyes, and long legs, walks toward them and sits right next to them, leaning on the tree.
The first boy out of breath says, “ I won, so now you have to do what I say.”
“ I would’ve won if you guys hadn’t cheated and started before go,” says the blonde haired girl.
“ Well Kate, life is not fair and it’s best to learn it now,“ says the boy with the orange hair.
Kate crosses her arm, “ Dallas, you cheated and you still lost. At least I didn’t lose embarrassing myself.”
Dallas shrugs his shoulders, “ you know I can never pass up an opportunity to make a bet. Even if I lose. Isn’t that right Josh.”
Josh, the first boy, nods in agreement still out of breath from the race. “ you know, that habit of yours is going to get you in real big trouble one day,” Josh says through a giggle.
“ Well if I go down, I’m taking you guys with me.” They all laugh. When they finish catching their breath from laughing too hard, they sit down next Kameron, who is texting heavily on her phone.
“ Who have you been texting so much lately,“. Kate ask trying to peer her head to see the phone.
“It’s nobody,” she said, quickly turning her phone off, “just some upperclassmen we met during orientation.”
“ Already got a high school boyfriend,” Josh teases.
“ The baby is all ready to leave the nest,” Dallas says through a fake cry.
“ ha ha, very funny guys, he’s just a friend that’s it”
“ Well friend or not, he better be nice to you or I will beat him up.“ Dallas flexes his muscles. Everyone laughs.
“ Don’t hurt yourself now,” Kameron says through a laugh.
They sit down talking for hours, about small stuff, and big stuff, They talk about everything and nothing at the same time. The conversation seems so important but so meaningless to outsiders, it was like they can talk forever and everything they said would’ve been the best thing from the last thing. The sun was about to go down when Josh says, “ I know what I want you guys to do now.”
He sits and waits for everyone to look at him, “ Will you spit it out, it’s almost time to go home,” Kate says.
“ I want us to make a pact,” Josh says as he sits up from the grass.
“ A pact?” Kameron says.
“ What kind of pact,” Dallas asks.
“ I want us to make a friendship pact. I want us to promise that we will stay friends forever, no matter how hard high school is, no matter how much new friends we make, no matter how mad we get at each other. I want us to promise that we will talk it out, we will never leave each other ,we will stick by each other side ,and we will be friends forever.” Josh says this with so much passion, it catches the others attention.
“ I’m down,” Dallas says, putting his hands in the middle of his friends.
“ Me too,” Kate says putting her hand on top of Dallas’.
Josh places his hand on top of Kates. They all stop for a second and look at Kameron, who has not put her hand in yet. She looks reluctant, then she finally places her hand in with the rest of her friends.
“ Friends forever on three,”Josh says.
“ One.” Dallas says.
“Two.” Kate follows.
“Friends forever!” Josh says by himself, and then the others say it a beat later. “ come on guys I said on three, not after three.”
“ Well nobody actually goes on three,” Dallas says annoyed.
They argue for an bit, then continue to play like there was no tomorrow. However, tomorrow was one of the biggest days of their lifes , it will be one they will remember forever, one they will tell their kids about, and one they will learn life lessons from. Tomorrow was the first day of high school.
