Chapter 1

You may think I'm some kind of freak.

I have the lowest voice in all of Indiana. I pride myself in having an obsession with Ludwig Van Beethoven.

My hair was unkempt. I hadn't cut it in six months, like Beethoven himself.

And somehow, after a terrible day of finals, on impulse, I dyed it a dark, night blue.

The box my friend gave me said it was cerulean.

Nice try, Zwigy.

So now, my friend, I have a story to tell you. About how I ended up in the huge mess called Parkview Behavioral Health Hospital.

And also about how I made the best of it.

My name is Johnson. I was named after my father, John. Like some kind of viking. Nobody lets me live that down.

And I, the night blue, tired, and conceited Johnson Hawkins was very, very depressed before I walked into that building.

I was lonely and scared shitless. Every day before that was a nightmare, precisely.

This is the story of how I realized it didn't have to be.
