Chapter 1
Hi, my name is Rachel. I am a 19-year-old first-year medicine student at AN University. Because of my good GPA and my family’s poor financial status, I got a full scholarship. My dad works as a security guard at a bank. My mom died due to cancer when I was 5 years old. My dad remarried Sarah.
Sarah hates me. I don’t know what I did. I have a younger step-sibling, John. He is 4 years old. I love my brother. He is so cute. After marrying Sarah I feel my dad had become distanced from me. I feel very alone at home. I didn’t have any friends at school. I was bullied because I was a scholarship student at a private school. I had 2 part-time jobs to earn my own pocket money. I wanted to study hard and make my dad feel proud of me. At least then my dad would like and treat me like John. I yearn for my dad’s love.
After high school graduation, I moved to Newyork for college. I had enough savings from part-time. So I was able to rent a cozy little apartment. I share it with my friend Anna. Anna and I met in College. We share many classes together. Anna’s family is one of the founders of our university. She owns the apartment. But still, she is very sweet. She doesn’t treat me like dirt as my old schoolmates did.
Anna has a fiance Peter. He is in AN business school. He will be graduating this year. His family owns a company that has pharma, tech, and many other fields. I have a huge crush on him after seeing him for the first time. I still remember that day. I was working my part-time job as a bartender in a pub near my house. A handsome grey-eyed man sat in front of me and ordered Whiskey. I was so lost in his eyes I didn’t notice Anna next to him. I felt sad knowing he is already taken.
“Rach, Let’s go to the mall. I need to buy a dress for the Cummings family event.“I came out of my trance.
“But I need to complete my assignment. Tomorrow is my deadline.“I said opening my laptop.
“Please Rach you know how important it is for me. I promise I will help you.” she opened my wardrobe and throw a random dress at me.“Now change into these and meet me out in 5 mins.No more talking” she demanded.
“You promised to help. I will kill you if you won’t.“I closed the door and quickly got ready.
We went to a mall and Anna was trying dresses while I am looking through the dresses. My eyes stopped at the long peach plain strap dress. It is pretty and simple. I looked at the price tag. Shit! it’s 4579$. I quickly put it back.
“Hey, how Am I looking?” she was in a light blue lacy full gown with a sweetheart neckline.
“Anna you look beautiful,” she asks me to stay near the cash counter and goes back to the trial room.
after paying for the dress, we go to Swarovski. They have beautiful jewelry but I can’t afford it. She bought two necklace sets. Once we are home as promised she helped me with my assignment.
Today is the charity event day. Anna comes to my room and puts a bag on my bed.“Open it.”
I look shocked to find the long peach dress with shoes and jewelry in the bag.“Anna I...”.
“You are coming with me to the party. And I saw you drooling at the dress and you are welcome.”
“Anna this is too much. I can’t accept it. I don’t even know anyone at the party.“I give the bag back to her.
“Please Rach, you know me and Peter. You won’t regret it.“I think hard before saying yes. She hugs me and tells me that she has hired a beautician for hair and makeup.
I am ready. I look in the mirror. I have never worn a dress this expensive before.
We reach the cummings mansion. Woah it’s so big. Anna hugs her parents. They never liked me. They think I am a bad influence on Anna. Heck, I don’t have any bad habits. I never knew being poor is bad.
“Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Niegel” as usual they ignore me. I feel so out of place. Anna breaks the tension by saying that we are going to get drinks.
“Don’t mind them. They are like that. Am sorry.“Anna says once we go near the food.
“Anna it’s ok no need to apologize.” I smile at her.
“Hello, Girls. Good evening” I hear a voice say behind me. I shiver. I quickly turn and take a sharp breath looking at Peter. He is dashing in the navy blue suit.
Anna goes to him and kisses him. I feel a sting in my heart. I excuse myself and go to an empty place. I see a balcony and go there. I know it’s wrong but I envy Anna. She has everything I don’t.Loving Parents.Loving fiance.Money.Beauty.
“What are you thinking about?“I hear a voice whisper in my ear. I know who it is. My feet are struck. I can’t move. I feel his hard body behind me. He turns me to face him.
“Anna is not here.” I quickly say. Peter brushes a strand of my hair behind my ear.
“I was looking for you. You know you are always on my mind.“His lips are few inches from mine. I can feel his breath on my lips.
“Peter what are you doing? This is wrong. You are my best friend’s fiance.“I move back only to be stopped by the railing. He closes the distance between us and wraps his hand around my waist.
“I don’t love her. She is like a friend to me. Our parents made the engagement only to merge our companies. Once I complete my education, I will break the engagement. I know you like me. I saw how you look at me” After saying this he leans down and places his lips on mine.
I say still. After a few seconds, I push him off me. I walk away from him. I find Anna behind him with tears in her eyes. She quickly runs away seeing me.
“Anna wait...Anna” I follow her outside. She takes a cab and leaves. Oh god, what did I do?
