Read-on-able! Only read a bit, opinion so far
"I've only read the start of this, but intend to finish as it's such a great idea with solid characters. My biggest advice would be to prune, prune, prune, to get to the gold nuggets, like dialogue and the really intriguing plot! The characters come across well through dialogue and actions, and they seem likeable, which is a great plus. Most editors and agents will tell you not to start a story with a character waking up and going through their daily routine, which this, unfortunately, does. But somehow, it kind of works - probably because the mystery kicks off quite quickly! But I would keep that dislike in mind and get used to not doing stuff the publishing industry frowns on. Similarly, dialogue tags beyond 'said' and 'head-hopping' so the point of view changes in a scene. SUGGESTIONS: When I say 'prune', I mean primarily the minutiae of detail, eg, 'dried his face of the water on a towel' could just be 'dried his face' and no need to mention the towel - what else would someone in a bathroom wipe their face on? That kind of thing. Concentrate your writing on words that are needed, not bloat. Similarly, the 'after' thing. Instead of 'X put his mug down on the table after filling it with water' - 'X filled his mug with water. He placed it on the table.' 'Events' writing should be chronological, unless there's a good reason to point the reader to one event over the other. I do want to continue with the story to see what happens - that's an achievement we all strive for, so nicely done. I want to see if there is a reason for the 3 AM drop, and I want to see how this phenomenon will affect these guys, where there'll be the breaking point and stakes raised - how and why this'll change from 'Oh,yeah, we get mysterious object dropping from the ceiling, weird, huh, but we're used to it,' to 'We are in so much trouble'..."
