"Having read Loss of Innocence (the 'warmer' version of this story) twice, I was familiar with the plot and thought I might be tempted to skip passages of description to get down to the nitty-gritty! I was so wrong in my assumptions!!! This author is so skilled that he has a way of describing places and situations that put one straight into the scene. Every single word needs to be read and absorbed! This is a love story like no other., perfect love where a man is willing to give his own life to protect the woman he loves. I was enthralled from the start and my attention did not wane once. At times, I shed tears because the writing was so poignant and moving. Yet the humour shines through in the way that Doug Haldane plays down his obvious intelligence, making him seem shy. An accident which could have cost the lives of a whole family, brings Doug to meet Susan, and it's love at first sight for the both of them. A promise to her parents that he will do his best to get Susan, with her serious health issues, to a hospital miles away, sends them on a walking journey together, where their love becomes stronger. Another promise is made, this time between the two of them. While Susan's condition slowly deteriorates, a hungry and injured bear follows them. Doug has only minutes to prepare to meet the bear, and one of them will die! By this time in the story I was unashamedly crying. The excitement and terror! A mere man up against a frantic and angry grizzly! Will that promise ever be fulfilled, or will Doug die a painful and gruesome death to prove his love?"
