Chapter 1

“Oh, I see!” said miss Lovat with her quivering voice. “I believe you.”

" Really?” said Coraline with a pleased face.

“Yes.” replied miss Lovat.

Coraline went away to get a drink for herself. When she approached near the centre of the garden, she gave a loud squeak looking down at the tulips. A white mouse sped away with something in its mouth.

“Huh!” thought Coraline, ” That mouse looks familiar... Oh no! that is the circus mouse and it has the broken piece of one of the souls.”

Before Coraline could string her thoughts together, the mouse started speeding away.

“Wait don’t go!” said Coraline

“Please come back!” she yelled as she chased the mouse. But it ran away.

“Is everything alright, Coraline?” said Coraline’s mom with no interest in involving herself in her wild imaginations.”

“Nothing “said Coraline with a grin but she kept wondering what it could all mean.

Later that night, Coraline heard a very quiet meow. But something was unsettling about it. It was as if there was no soul in it.

Coraline woke up with a jolt and looked around. Although it was dark, she could make out a distorted figure. The creature ran with a swift, sudden movement. Coraline jumped out of her bed in pursuit.

She found herself in front of the tiny door. She pinched herself hard to make sure it wasn’t a dream when she noticed the dark figure had stealthily disappeared muttering “buttons…”

Coraline thought about what that could mean. It certainly didn’t bring back any happy memories.

Tired, she went back to bed and quickly fell asleep.

The next day, Coraline gulped down her breakfast and rushed to Miss Lovat’s house.

It was a tall, ancient building painted black and brown. Coraline knocked on the door and waited gingerly.

“Oh, welcome dear! What makes you come here?” asked Miss Lovat royally.

“Well, there was an... Incident, last night.” replied Coraline

“Come on Wyborn! Your friend Coraline is here” barked Miss Lovat.

“I am coming!” cried Wybie as he came from his bedroom, heavy-eyed.

All of them sat down at an old chestnut coloured table.

Coraline looked around, “The house is old-fashioned.” Coraline mumbled.

“Um... Coraline?” said miss Lovat.

“Oh sorry!” said Coraline as she went on to tell them about the strange creature from last night.

“Oh, I see! Be careful Coraline!”

“I will be” she nodded persuasively.

“I should go see Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, they were a tremendous help last time. They had warned me about the danger I was in.”

“You should!” exclaimed Miss Lovat.

“Okay then, bye” Coraline waved goodbye and left Miss Lovat’s house like a cat on hot bricks.

Coraline darted towards Miss Spink and Miss Forcible’s house downstairs. The sisters were primping around with soft rock songs.

“Oh, hallo Coraline, what makes you come here?” said Miss Forcible holding up her glasses.

“The last time you had anticipated my fate” said Coraline in nervously. ” Could you please do it again”

“Sure darling!” Miss Forcible said wiggling around. “This is a new flavour ‘Blue Lemonade’.”

“But this time I will predict the future” remarked Miss Spink pushing her sister aside with pleasure.

“Drink it up dear, yes that much” said Miss Spink looking towards Coraline.

Miss Spink took the cup, carefully twisting and turning it.

Coraline looked at the departed dog angels before tying her eyes to the briefcase below the shelves. She recognised it at an instant. It had the sticky gumball candy which had been considerably useful last time.

“You made me that grey marble with that candy.” Said Coraline.

“Well, I haven’t opened it since the last time I made for you,” remarked Miss Spink reaching for the briefcase. As Miss Spink unfastened it, Coraline caught sight of three labels aligned as per the years in ascending order. 1902, 1920 and 1960.

Confused, Coraline asked what these years meant?

Glum, Miss Forcible replied “These were the years where we had carved the grey marble for three little girls about half of your age but unfortunately, they all vanished. But you needn’t worry my dear!”

“Okay, that’s enough! stop scaring her” barked Miss Spink.

“So, what’s my future?” asked Coraline timidly.

“Ooh, Coraline I see a button and a very distorted figure”

“What does it mean?” asked Coraline.

“Well, it’s not danger. Off you go then.” Said a high-pitched Miss Spink.

Without commenting Coraline left, anxious. She decided to go home. As she was going, she pondered about the other mother. When she approached the kitchen, she saw her dad had cooked lasagne.

The lasagne was horrible to look at. As soon as Coraline tried it, she knew it was just as disgusting to eat. She decided to have some canned baked beans instead and told the same to her parents.

“Fine Coraline, at least have some of your veggies.” Sighed her mother.

Coraline sighed back.

“Well Coraline, please go to bed yourself tonight. Dad and I have a lot of work. Maybe tomorrow I will read you a story.”

Coraline left the kitchen and went straight to bed.

The wind blew a whisper in Coraline’s ears “Have you learned some manners?”. Startled, she woke up. She decided to go to the drawing-room to the other world door. There she saw a green light peering through the closed door. She spotted some fur near the door. She thought it must belong to a circus mouse but on closer examination, she found it to be too long to be a mouse’s fur.

She went back to her bed wrapped up in her thoughts and soon fell asleep.

The next day, after a filling breakfast, Coraline went exploring. On her way to the well, she met Mr Bobinsky.

“Oh Caroline! how are you doing?” said he joyfully.

“Great” replied Coraline, still a little upset that he didn’t get her name right.

“So, any new circus performances?” asked Coraline hoping for a yes.

“No, the mice are hiding at night and keep saying that she is back, she is back.”

“oh, that is weird” said Coraline almost certain that they were talking about the other mother. “ok got to go through.” She quickly left and tumbled to Wybie’s house.

She told him about everything and insisted the other mother had come back.

Wybie’s grandma commented from the kitchen “But why! There isn’t any little girl she could be after? There is only you.”

“Yes” replied Coraline “what if she is after me?”

“It could be possible”

Coraline was terrified.

“Well, what should we do? We have no key or the souls or anything that could help us” said Coraline without pausing to breathe.

“why don’t you both go and explore the gardens of the pink palace?”

Coraline was ready as it is. She may be afraid, but she is full of courage when it is needed. That’s how she saved her parents and the souls of the three trapped children the last time she was face-to-face with the other mother.

But Wybie was a little scared, he did not want to fight the beldam.

“Wait, before you got there, have some biscuits and keep some apples with you. Just in case she traps you again” smirked grandma.

Once they fished the handful of ginger biscuits Miss Lovat had offered them and packed the apples, they set off to explore the gardens. In the gardens, they didn’t see anything unusual. Just red tulips and some turnips. They were sure that Mr Bobinsky must have planted them.

When they reached the centre of the garden, they found an interesting key- it had a button head and a small, black cat below it. The shaft was encircled by 3 long tails.

“Do you think this will lead us to the other mother?” gasped Wybie examining the key.

“It could…” hesitated Coraline. She carefully placed the key in her beloved brown bag.

She made her way back home.

At around midnight as Coraline was fast asleep, there was a soft rapping at the window. Half awake, she opened her eyes and looked around.

“Oh, it’s you” said Coraline looking towards the window.

meow went the cat.

“Come in. Do you want to sleep with me?” asked Coraline.

The black cat blinked its eyes slowly.

Coraline took it as a yes and quickly fell asleep again.

She woke up, this time in her dream. She met the three souls.
