Perfect Start to October

"I'm not typically an avid reader, and it takes a really good writing style coupled with an intriguing plot to keep me engaged. But Josh Dean's story had both of those and more. My attention usually wanders while reading, but I found that once I engaged in this story, the flow of the writing kept me scrolling and scrolling both to find out what was going to happen next in the suspenseful and hard to predict plot and to meet the new characters that cropped up. Every introduction was made with carefully chosen words to concisely give you a very clear and specific picture of the person you were meeting. The night shift hospital setting was perfectly creepy, and you are left feeling like you're right there traveling those dark, quiet halls with the book's protagonist. I loved this leading character, specifically the way Dean explains his backstory in snippets throughout and gives him a sort of fantastical way of viewing the world - from pretending his work suit is a suit of armor to pretending he's piloting a spaceship as he's driving down the road. Dean doesn't neglect providing depth to his characters in favor of plot. Both are fleshed out in that way that produces really good writing, that sticks with you long after you've stopped reading. I would highly recommend this book if you are looking for an intriguing, suspenseful horror/mystery story for your October, and I can't wait to see what this author produces next."

Nights in the Ruined City

"Night by night I worked through this book and found it hard to put down. Dean's writing style kept me on edge and engaged in the characters and the mystery surrounding the so-called ruined city. I do not read a lot of horror - I am more of a movie person - but this book kept me in suspense and itching to see what kind of horrors would be revealed. Since I read it before bed every night, it disturbed my dreams for quite some time. The story is fascinating and the mystery is satisfying. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it."
