Summary

The book tells the story of Helga, who spends 5 years in America and is confronted with cultural differences not only in dating. The story begins with a preamble to Helga's life, which tells of her origins and the background to "Dating for Survival". Coming from the German province, She wants to fulfil her personal American dream and decides to go to America as an Au Pair in order to learn English and experience an unforgettable adventure. For her big American dream she comes up with some ideas and is very creative - first of all when applying as an Au Pair. She is chosen by a family that turns out to be an extraordinary stroke of luck. The family is very wealthy and gives Helga a first insight into a world she has never known before. Helga makes her first experiences with dating in America, but only meets bizarre guys and sees the whole thing as fun and as a good way to get good food. After a year as an Au Pair, Helga decides to stay and study in America. Just like the year as an au pair, her studies are only a means to an end, and so is her creative application for a study place, which she also gets. The scarce financial means become even more scarce due to the self-financed studies. Therefore, Helga continues to use the proven means of "Dating". The necessity becomes ever larger to finance itself their living (speak - good meal) among other things.
