Can we be Friends

"Daddy I don't wanna go to school!" I cried, hugging tightly onto his pant leg.

"Honey it's gonna be great. You'll make so many new friends to play with" my dad said, bending down to my level.

"But I don't want to! I'm scared" I whined.

"You'll be okay, I promise. Now we have to go or you'll be late" my dad said, scopping me up in his arms. He walked me quickly down the hall and started talking to a strange lady.

"Hello, you must be Mia, I'm your teacher, Mrs. B" the lady smiled at me but I only held onto my dad tighter.

"She's a bit scared" my dad said to Mrs.B.

"Don't worry, she'll be fine here" the lady laughed and my dad set me down.

"I'll come pick you up later, be a good girl for daddy okay?" My dad asked me and I nodded. "See you later pumpkin" he gave me a kiss on the cheek before rustling my golden curls and walking away.

"Alright everyone, let's form a line" Mrs. B said as everyone started lining up against the wall. I stood behind a boy, with brown hair and blue eyes.

"Can we be friends?" He whispered to me.

"Sure" I said, trying to give him a bit of a smile but sad that daddy had left.

"I'm Rex" the boy said shyly.

"Mia" I replied.

We spent the rest of the day together, especially at recess. I learned that we liked a lot of the same things and that he was fun to play with. We played tag and hide and seek at recess, ignoring the other kids.

"Gotcha!" Rex said as he patted my shoulder, tagging me as it.

I giggled and ran after him, enjoying the rest of the game. "Alright everyone! Time to get ready to go!" Mrs. B yelled and everyone started running inside. She helped us get everything packed up and I said goodbye to Rex when he had to catch the bus.

I smiled thinking about playing with Rex again tomorrow when my dad showed up. "Hello pumpkin" he said to me as he bent down. I ran over and jumped at him and he scooped me up. "Why are you smiling?" He asked.

"I made a new friend daddy" I grinned at him.

"I knew you would, what is her name?" He asked and I started laughing.

"No daddy, he is a boy. His name is Rex" I said and my dad seemed surprised but patted me on the head.

"I'm glad you had fun with Rex today. Do you think you want to come to school again?" He asked.

"Yes daddy, I already told Rex I would see him tomorrow" I said happily and my dad nodded.

******the next year********

"I can't believe my little girl is in grade 1!" My dad said as he started tickling me.

"Daddy stop!" I laughed and he withdrew his tickle attack.

"Okay pumpkin, have fun in there" he said as he walked me to the classroom.

"Thanks daddy!" I smiled at him and walked in, looking for Rex. I saw the familiar brown haired boy waving at me.

"Come sit next to me Mia" he shouted and I ran over to him, giving him a hug.

"I missed you Rex" I smiled at him and he nodded to show he felt the same way.

The teacher started class and let us stay in the seats we picked. Occassionally during work time Rex and I would help each other with the hard questions. But we were both relieved when the bell for recess rang. Rex and I were the first people out of the classroom and we ran straight outside, immediately in a game of tag.

"I can't believe you got me again" I whined at Rex as he dodged my hands. He laughed but kept running around me.

I liked Rex. He was my best friend in the whole world and we always had lots of fun together. When Rex noticed I wasn't playing anymore he walked up in front of me. "What is it?" He frowned.

"Will you marry me?" I giggled.

"Sure, we're best friends already" Rex shrugged and smiled at me.

"What will we use for rings?" I asked.

"I have some ring pops in my back pack. After we eat the candy we can use those" Rex said and I nodded.

It didn't end up being until next recess when we had our 'ceremony'. I pretended to be in a dress and we swapped the rings. "I love you Rex" I smiled a toothless grin at him since I was missing my front teeth.

"I love you too" he smiled at me and we hugged. I admired the plastic ring on my hand and we spent the rest of the day playing happily with each other.

"Bye Rex, I love you" I hugged Rex and he hugged back.

"Bye Mia, I love you too" he waved at me and walked off to catch his bus. It wasn't long after that my dad came to pick me up.

"Hi pumpkin" he said as I leapt at him and he twirled me around. "How did school go?" He asked, taking a sip of water as we walked out to the car.

"Good! Rex and I got married!" I giggled and my dad spit out his water, going into a coughing fit. "See the ring" I asked, holding my hand up to him.

"Sweetie that's something grown ups do" he said and I pouted.

"But I love Rex, he's my best friend" I sniffled.

"I'm glad you have such a good friend Mia" my dad said as he hugged me. "I'm just surprised" he chuckled as he picked me up and put me into my car seat.

"Can Rex come over to our house tomorrow?" I asked.

"No pumpkin, daddy has to work so grandma is going to come play with you. Doesn't that sound fun?" My dad asked.

"Grandma is the best!" I smiled and bounced in my seat as dad laughed at me.

******** grade two********

I ran up to Rex at recess, crying and he frowned at me. "What's wrong?" He asked.

"The ring you gave me doesn't fit" I sobbed, holding the ring in my clenched hand.

"Don't worry, I'll just give you a new one" Rex said as he pulled me into a hug.

"But where are you going to get one?" I asked.

"I think I have a spare one in my backpack, mine didn't fit either" he frowned.

"Oh! I can make you a new one" I smiled at him and sat on the floor since it was indoor recess.

"How will you do that?" He asked as I pulled out some string.

"You just tie it together like this until it's the right size" I showed him as I started making a blue one for him.

"Can I make yours?" He asked and I handed him some pink string. "Okay what are the steps?" He asked.

It took us the whole recess but by the end we had two make shift rings made out of the string I had. "Thank you for helping me Rex, I love you" I hugged him.

"I love you too Mia" he smiled at me and hugged back.

I didn't want to get rid of the plastic ring so I used some string to make a necklace for it. At the end of the day Rex came over to say goodbye and saw what I did. "Can you do that for me?' He asked with wide eyes.

"Sure" I smiled, I took a piece of string and put the ring on it, tying it around his neck.

"Thanks! I really like it" he said before his bus was called.

"I love you Rex" I told him as he was running off.

"I love you too Mia" he smiled at me and ran off while I waited for my dad as usual.

"Hi pumpkin, what's this?" He asked, looking at my necklace.

"My ring didn't fit so Rex and I made new ones and I turned the other one into a necklace" I stated as I smiled at my dad.

"That's a good idea" he smiled back at me.

"Can I invite Rex over for my birthday?" I asked and my dad frowned. "Pleeeeease?" I begged.

"Okay..... since you're birthday is this week he can come for the afternoon" my dad said and I squealed happily.

"Thanks daddy!" I hugged him and he laughed.

"Come on, daddy has to get to work" he said as he scooped me up and put me into the car. I can't wait to tell Rex!
