Prologue
Connor Davis' POV
10 years earlier
I will never forget seeing the most beautiful girl for the first time across the field in front of my college dorm. It was one of the first sunny days of spring and every one was outside either just hanging out on the grass or running around playing some sort of game. I had been playing a game of touch football when a head of long shiny dark brown hair swished behind a girl waving towards a group of friends as she walked towards them. She was tall and willowy as if her limbs just flowed around her. I still hadn't seen her face, but I would bet money that she was beautiful just based on how she carried herself. I was so entranced by her that I tripped on my own feet and the guy chasing after me accidentally tackled me in the process.
I got up and immediately started to look for the girl. I finally spotted her hair sitting with her friends. This time she was facing me and I would've won that bet. She was beyond beautiful. She had soft features and a smattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose and her big doe eyes slightly upturned. I knew instantly I needed to talk to her but had no idea without making myself look like a douche.
"No way in hell would she give you the time of day." I heard my friend Mark laugh jarring me out of my stupor.
"You don't know that" our other friend Matt started, "she could be blind." They both burst out laughing while I still just stared. With the ruckus they were causing, her eyes lifted and looked with mine. A flash of anger crossed her face as I became confused. She jumped up and stalked over to us. While she looked beyond pissed I still couldn't get over how beautiful she was or how I could not see that her eyes were a vivid green.
"Why the fuck are you assholes laughing at us?!" She roared.
Oh fuck these dickheads were fucking everything up. They both instantly shut up.
""We weren't laughing at you. We were laughing at this love stuck shmuck right here." Mark pointed his thumb towards me.
"Then why were you staring at us?" She yelled a little quieter now.
"We were telling him that you'd never give him the time of day unless you were blind. It was a dumb joke not aimed at you at all. Solely aimed at the idiot over there who can't stop mooning over you." Matt now jumped in.
I now finally had the where with all to speak up for myself.
"Hey dickbags, I was trying to figure out how to talk to her without looking like an asshole. Thanks for the help." I said sarcastically at them before turning to her. "Hey I'm sorry they're assholes, but they definitely weren't making fun of you. Sorry about the trouble." And I turned and walked away.
It took everything I had not to turn back to see her reaction. Maybe I would get another chance to not look like and ditto but today was not that day. Before I knew it Mark and Matt had caught up with me and fallen into step.
"Well we might have been assholes, but we made you look like a good dude." Matt laughed "she was dumbfounded when you left like that."
"Well I'll probably never run into her again. So thanks for ruining my shot." I said light heartedly and shoved him
"Eh I don't know maybe karma will be your friend since we were dicks."
I rolled my eyes at this and said sure sarcastically. I doubted that very much, but couldn't help to be a bit hopeful.
For weeks after seeing her for the first time, I constantly looked for that beautiful shines hair or those eyes and was always walking around slightly disappointed. Until one day I was walking through the business building to get to class when I heard a voice call out, "Hey you!" Not assuming it was for me I just kept walking. I heard the voice again, this time it was coming from right behind me so I couldn't help but turn around and see if it was directed at me.
My eyes immediately went wide as I realized that the girl I had been looking for was standing right in front of me. "Hey its you!" I stuttered out.
"Hey, I just wanted to apologize for yelling at you the other week. My friend had just broken up with her dick of a boyfriend and she was convinced that he had told you guys something about her So i'm sorry for yelling."
"What an asshole move. No not at all just my asshole friends giving me shit."
"No worries. I just wanted to apologize since I saw you."
I watched as she tucked her hair behind her ear, not making any immediate move to leave. Fuck it I am going for it.
"Hey you wouldn't want to get coffee or something later today?" I asked trying not to cringe at my awkward self.
"Yea sure!" She answered without hesitating. " here give me your number. I have class until 3 but am free after that. Just text me what time your thinking."
" yea definitely. Sounds good." I stood in shock as she handed my phone back.
She waved as she walked away. Calling out, "see you later!"
I just stood there staring at her contact in my phone, Selene Agosti, before I was pushed back into reality. Mark stood there calling my name.
"Dude you were in la la land for a second. Why are you all spaced out?" He asked
"I just ran into that girl from a few weeks ago."
"The one that yelled at us?" He asked
"Yea she apologized for yelling and I asked her out for coffee?"
"Damn! Don't fuck this up!"
"That's rich coming from you. Did I tell you I saw Soph the other day?"
"Ugh please don't tell me. I've fucked that up beyond belief and now its basically unsalvageable."
"Well its kinda a good dude move on her part, but the whole situation is scandalous papa bear." I laughed
He punched me, "dude don't laugh at my train wreck life please. Focus on you not losing your cool on this date."
I held my hands up in surrender, "ok ok yea you're right, rule number one, always look cool." I said confidently before groaning, "I'm totally going to fuck it up. Why would she say yes to an ogre like me??"
"Dude you're not an ogre, you've got that big Viking thing going on. I'd date you." He laughed
"I'm not entirely sure that helps." I laughed
I was anxious the entire rest of the day leading up to meeting her at the coffee shop on campus. Seeing her walk in only heighten my nerves. I stood up and waved her over to my table. She sank into the chair in front of me.
"So mystery man, you still haven't told me your name." She laughed, "for all I know you could be some weirdo that everyone talks about."
"I hope I'm not one of those weirdos. Connor Davis, nice to officially meet you, Selene." And I stuck my hand out.
She laughed and shook my hand.
"Nice to meet you too. Now that I know your name I can go home and facebook stalk you"
I couldn't help but burst out laughing, "i'm glad you don't beat about the bush. Totally going to facebook stalk you too."
We talked about everything. She was from Ohio and did not have any plans to move back after college. She was an only child and loved the beach more than anything. She was also an aspiring writer. She laughed when I asked to read some of her writing and told me that I needed to wine and wine her a little more before she let me get that close.
"So I get continue to woo you?"
She laughed at that "woo?"
"Yea you seem like someone who loves creative language."
"You might be right." She said coyly
We started walking out at this point. I held out my arm for her to hold. She looked at it confused before looking up at me with a beaming smile as she linked her arm with mine.
"Who knew you were such a gentleman."
"Very few people know, so we have to keep it on the down low. Gotta keep my reputation in tact" I joked.
"Oh goodness you're one of those?"
"God no! I have no reputation. I'm just a lucky guy that you actually said yes to coffee and letting me wine and dine you"
"It helps that you're tall and cute. Modern day Viking without the whole raping and pillaging." She laughed
I couldn't help but burst out laughing. "That's the second time someone called me a Viking today. Its doing wonders to my confidence."
"Oh goodness I take it all back! You're basically a leprechaun." She groaned
"No can do lady. You totally told me I was a sexy Viking and I'm never going to forget it."
"Well I'm going to leave you on that note for the day. I don't want to say anymore for fear that you'll get too cocky and your ego will get out of control. Gotta keep my sexy Viking in check." Saying that last bit softly before she reached up and kisses my cheek before looking over her shoulder at me as she walked away. I stood there in a daze. She was everything I ever wanted and we had barely touched.
She made me believe in love at first sight and I never wanted to let go of that thought.
