Promise

I had a friend Ryan at the age of five. Yeah, that’s my son’s name kept my son’s name the same as his name. He had one of those hypnotizing light blue eyes, grey hair, and a frail body.

Ryan and I were best friends as our parents were childhood friends. But before his fifth birthday, he started feeling sick. He was the one guy who cared about me, used to keep his word and protect me even though he was weaker than me. On the day of my birthday, I asked him to promise to live with me for a decade at least. As that’s the time limit I could get from the tickets we used to buy favors from each other. If you ask me now I don’t know why I did so I could have asked for candy or something. Then, he started spending his time in hospitals, of course, I was angry. Why would he spend his time at the hospital and not with me? And at the age of fifteen on the day of his birthday, he left this world. I wept on his grave crying why he didn’t keep his promise. I was naive back then.

After he left away I never wanted to make friends, every year on his birthday I used to visit his grave. Some years passed I got married and my wife gave birth to my son. The reason I kept my son’s name by his name is that they were born on the same day.

Everything was alright for nine years but before his tenth birthday, he fell sick and fainted. I visited Ryan’s grave on their birthday and told him deplorably I was going to lose my son. After a day or two, I got a call from the nurse that Rayan was awake while I was at work. I drove towards the hospital but I was in shock when I saw him. He was lifeless had whitish-blue eyes like a ghost was characterless. I asked the doctor about that but he said he had no idea. We returned home.

After that day he was a completely different person. He was always weak but was acting more friendly towards me than his mother, which was strange. ” Do you want to ask me something?” he always used to ask me I answered no. I used felt Ryan was around me when I was with him.

On his fifteenth birthday, he was with me. We were doing his birthday preparation he said, “I kept my promise.” and fainted. I freaked out. I took him to the hospital and when he opened his eyes after some hours. “He is suffering from amnesia” Doctor told me. He couldn’t remember anything from the last five years.

After returning home, I asked my wife if she noticed how his eye’s color changed. But she couldn’t spot any difference.

It happened a decade ago today he remembers nothing and is living his life with his children and wife. But I regret not asking him when he said, “Do you want to ask me something?” and I don’t know Why? How? That happened and don’t know why I didn’t answer him ........
