Chapter 1

VICKI

I still remember how dark and cold it was—the needles that constantly poked my body, and the smiles of the people who did it. I always wondered what would happen if I were at my full strength—had enough energy to make them suffer too.

How would their faces look?

How would they react?

How would—

“Vicki! Quit being in the dark zone already!” A voice shouted. I was in the middle of meditation when the light of my heart, Jessie, decided to ruin it.

“It's not the dark zone! And why do you keep calling it that?” I shout back.

My room door was closed, so it always bothered me how she could tell where my mind was.

“Because all you do is go back to those fucked up memories!” she replied.

“Language!” I exclaimed.

“Will you two shut up!” The other light of my heart, Tori, exclaimed. “Some of us are trying to get our beauty sleep!”

“What beauty sleep?” Jessie asked. “I thought you ‘oozed’ beauty?”

“Only when certain idiots don't shout at two o'clock in the morning!” Tori hissed.

“We're not shouting! We're talking!”

“Talking is when you're in the same room! Not while the doors are closed and people are supposed to be sleeping!”

With a wave of my hand, I make the two lights of my heart appear. Jessie and Tori both float in the air for a second before landing on the carpeted ground with a hard thud. Tori growls, her red eyes glowing among her messy jet black hair as she clutches a pillow in her arms.

“What the fuck?” she hisses.

“Language!” Jessie scolds, pointing her finger at Tori. Her white hair was braided back, and her brown eyes gleamed with joy as she smiled.

“Oh, shut it!” Tori said, throwing the pillow at Jessie, hitting her square in the face.

“I love you too,” Jessie said, hugging the pillow.

“I like how all this started because I was meditating,” I chimed in.

Tori and Jessie both glare at me. “Oh, please,” Tori scoffs. “The last thing you were doing was meditating.”

“Agreed,” Jessie nodded. “You were doing that weird revenge alteration of the universe thing.”

I furrow my brows. What is it with this girl? Where does she get these ideas from?

“It's called illumination of vile,” I corrected.

Jessie rolled her eyes. “Whatever,” she said, getting to her feet. Flopping back, she landed on my queen-sized bed with a slight bounce. “While we're here, might as well have a slumber party.”

“You know we're too old for slumber parties, right?” Tori said as she and I stood up.

“You're never too old for a slumber party. Older people change the name to a ‘sleepover’ or ‘sleeping over’.”

“Well, you got the sleep part right,” Tori said, climbing onto the bed. “I'm gonna get comfy,” she sighed.

I jump onto the bed and crawl in the middle of the two. “Okay, goodnight, lights of my heart,” I cooed, pulling up the blankets.

“Yuck!” Tori gagged. “Stop calling us that!”

“Why? I love you both so much.”

“Then just say that instead of that mushy stuff,” she said, rolling to her side with her back to me and Jessie.

“Oh, Tori,” Jessie whined. “You know you love it.”

“Goodnight!” She grumbled.

The room soon filled with her soft snores, and Jessie and I followed suit as well. The nightmares of the past no longer haunt my dreams, but are instead lit by the lights beside me.
