Prologue
The humid summer air hangs wet, dripping rain all over the world. The white noise from the rain fills my ears. I run. An old bus stop stands tall, weathering the rain. I see you running into the same bus stop as mine and my heart begins to race. I’ve been looking at you for months now, as we’re in the same 9th grade class. God, you’re beautiful. Your wet hair further sculpting your face and the rain caressing your lips. Oh how I wish I could be the rain that touches you. You speak. I try to respond but no words come out of my gaping mouth. You turn awkwardly, pretending to look for a bus that’s never coming. Finally, I manage to speak: “H-hi!” And so begins our friendship in which I love you but feel as though those words will break you and destroy the beauty that we have created.
