Chapter 1
Before I ever became an Alpha, nothing made sense.
There was still hesitation in my ability to lead. I was speaking and ruling for two-hundred werewolves who were realistically strangers at most. I knew they respected me as their Alpha, but I didn't feel like I fulfilled the entire qualifications of a true Alpha. It was easy to say only half of me wanted this position.
Four years passed in my reign as an Alpha. It still did not feel like it was for me. Every single day felt like another day feeling more incomplete. I thought I would have it all figured out by now. Since it was my duty to keep the pack safe, I made sure they never saw the fragmented Alpha someone gave them.
My recurring thoughts of failing my pack often stemmed from my lack of self-awareness. I grew up thinking I was only cut out to be one thing. I had no other reasonable alternative if I wasn't who they claimed me to be. I never thought I would be torn between two different lives. I didn't ask for this; I didn't ask to be this miracle wolf.
My secrets kept building up because I lacked the trust to share them. Until one day, my Beta returned to the pack. He and I knew nothing of each other, we were strangers too. As a child, they sent him to live off in a place no normal wolf could even reach. Twenty years later, he was back, and he carried the same ill fate I did. He was the first person who knew of my secret.
"Rendezvous at the fringe of the territory. Suspected breach by an outsider," Kai, my Beta, said as he entered the room.
I assumed he was mind-linking with another pack member. It was safe to assume it was our Gamma, Wilson. After all, Wilson was expected to handle the patrolling. Nothing and no one entered this pack without seeking him first. Wilson handled any intrusions first before it made way to me. They knew I had other things to focus on so they minimized the problems by handling some of them for me.
"Wilson is almost at the border. He has Nolan covering the fringe of the territory since they're around the area," Kai said.
"The outsider? Who is it?" I questioned as I placed my glass down. It was empty now, and it probably should have been my last drink.
Kai shook his head. "No word on whether it is a human or werewolf yet." He turned away slightly and his eyes shifted from the usual dark brown to a golden shade.
"I assume they can efficiently handle this problem. If Wilson needs any assistance, you will assist him. I'm not worried about this problem."
"I'm sure Wilson will get rid of them before they can even enter our pack. Wilson is always on top of his duty," Kai said. Although, it sounded more like he was reminding me.
The Beta and Gamma of the pack were in charge of specific tasks, at least in my pack. My Beta, Kai, handled the punishment of any prisoner I held and managed the training for all wolves. Ideally, his purpose was mostly based on punishing others— violence, but he expected I had to give him confirmation before he did any killing. Then again, I trusted Kai's judgment so much, I almost never had him ask for permission to kill a prisoner.
The Gamma, also known as the third in command, was Wilson. He was to maintain the security of the pack. No one could enter the pack without his permission. He also handled the minuscule complaints of the pack members. If it was too big of an issue, only then would he bring it up to me. Another priority Gamma's were given was guarding their Luna. There was no Luna to guard in my pack, so it was only one less task Wilson didn't have to do.
My mother was Luna a few years ago, she no longer needed protecting. I didn't think my mother ever allowed anyone to guard her. She was too much of a strong-willed woman. I could only hope the next Luna wasn't as stubborn as my mother. If there was a Luna in this pack, she would need a guard. I created too many enemies in my twenty-one years of living. Some weren't even by my own choice or actions.
Kai and Wilson had their duties within the pack. As an Alpha, I could not do it all alone without the help of others. Unlike other Alphas who valued their pride, I could admit I needed the help. I would never admit it out loud, but I knew. They knew though, Kai and Wilson, how much I appreciated their efforts on the roles they played in the pack.
As an Alpha, I ruled the pack. I could give out any order and punish whoever the fuck I wanted. My main priorities were expanding the land, unifying treaties, and controlling the pack finances. Alphas couldn't just pull money out of thin air, we had to do the same things humans did to maintain a decent life. We had to work.
My father owned a cybersecurity software company. He surpassed his first million not too long after meeting my mother. That was over twenty-two years ago. By now, we were making way into higher digits. I was lucky I was born into wealth. I wasn't doing nearly as much work as other Alphas, but I still contributed to the human world and werewolves by owning this company now. The other werewolves and humans didn't even realize it.
"Are you busy?" Kai asked.
I shook my head. "I'm not. I planned on expanding the company but I'll put that on pause. I need to blow off steam."
"They didn't agree with your terms?" Kai asked as he shook his head.
"I didn't agree with theirs."
Kai made a confused facial expression. He was communicating with Wilson; I assumed. When they were done, Kai looked at me with an odd look. I couldn't tell what he was thinking. If anything, it seemed like the problem involving our trespassers, intensified.
"It's a... human," he said warily. "She was near the border and she went running in another direction. Wilson says she's the daughter of Michael Desrosiers, that rich guy."
"What did you say?" I growled as I stepped closer to Kai. Kai held his hands up and eyed me suspiciously.
There were red flags flashing in my mind. I was concerned now. Only a few minutes ago, I was sure that Kai and Wilson would settle the issue, but now I realized I had to intervene. There was a person of interest at the mention of Michael Desrosiers. One of his daughters was important to me. No one knew of the interest I took in one of his daughters, and no one would ever find out anytime soon.
The history between Michael Desrosiers and I was next to nonexistent, but one of his daughters caught my interest long before I realized what was happening. Everything happened so fast when I met his youngest daughter. One day I was just some wolf celebrating his birthday and the next, I was diving head first to save someone that would forever fuck up my life.
"I don't know which daughter. Wilson couldn't identify her. We only know it's one of Michael Desrosiers daughters because he recognized the scent. She was running for the hills though. It didn't sound too good," Kai answered carefully. He took a step away from me.
"I will not attack you. I just need to find her," I said as I barged past him.
Kai kept up without problems. "Why do you need to find her?"
"I need his daughter alive if I plan on making any deals with him. I can't have one of his daughters dying because it will delay my plans," I lied easily.
I wasn't stupid enough to confess my true reasons for saving a human's daughter. It was a damn good lie because Kai didn't question me any further. To Kai's knowledge, I was only saving Michael Desrosiers daughter because death could cause setbacks in future agreements. Little did he know, there was much more than that. I could never live with myself if a certain daughter died.
As soon as I was outside, I shifted into my wolf immediately. When I said I felt incomplete, I wasn't saying it because it was for some pathetic excuse. Whenever a person shifted into their wolf, their wolf had its own conscious mind. The wolf was in control while the human parts of a person lingered in the back of the mind. For me, it was never like that. Every single time I shifted, it physically pained me to do so and there was nothing else there.
It was just me.
For a while, I could never figure it out but then I put all the puzzles together and figured out why I was the way I was. It all went back to being called a so-called miracle wolf. I wasn't a miracle. I was a mistake my parents made one night. They thought I was a gift waiting to unravel.
I kept running with all other thoughts dissipated. Nothing else mattered at the moment. I had other problems to worry about. I didn't know if I had to save a person tonight. As far as I knew, it could have been any of Michael Desrosiers daughters. I wasn't taking any chances though. Either way, death would not be an option in this scenario. I'd save whoever I needed to.
The closer I ran to the border, a specific scent enthralled me. I recognized the scent. There was no going back now. The closer I got, the stronger her scent became. It was like all inhibitions I had were lowered and heightened all at once. At times, whenever I smelled her, my inhibitions lowered significantly, but today wasn't like those days. I had to be on my best to make sure I saved her from whatever she was running from.
I had even run past Wilson and the other wolves who were originally waiting for me. They tried to get my attention, but I was long gone. I was following the scent of a lost human girl and now, the smell of an unfamiliar wolf. It was too early to tell whether it was a rogue. I wouldn't know until I was within sight of the lone wolf.
I had lost sight of my pack members in my search for the human. I halted when her scent was in one place. There she was lying on the ground. She was still breathing as I could hear how harsh it was. She turned her head and gasped when she saw me. There was no hesitation when she got up. She ran again, and it pissed me off when she did. I don't know how the Hell she was able to get back up so quickly.
I was quick to assume that she was running from me, but there was another wolf near me. I heard the snarling and turned to face the wolf. The wolf was a male and near my territory. The normal order I gave Wilson was to let a lone wolf pass, as long it wasn't on my territory, but this was different. He was after a person I cared about on my territory.
The wolf was unfamiliar that much was clear. He was large which only furthered my suspicions about him. He was almost the size of an Alpha, but not a Beta. He radiated the same authority as I did. It made little sense for an Alpha to run alone, especially so close to another territory. He was snarling at me but soon dashed past me.
He was chasing her.
She wasn't actually scared of me. She was afraid of the brown wolf. My wolf was white. It wasn't a common color for wolves, but it also wasn't anything significant either. I might have startled the brown wolf because the color wasn't common, at least not here.
I went charging for the wolf without a second thought. He was fast and smart. He dashed between trees and bushes. With the ability I possessed, I easily could keep up. I was nearing the brown wolf. He snapped his jaws at the girl's leg and she fell. I heard something crack, and that only fueled my anger.
She cried out in pain. I knew she was crying. The sound of her sobbing was the loudest thing I ever heard. There was something about her agony that made me break. She was trying to touch her knee, but her hands were shaking so badly she could not touch it.
I lunged at the wolf that was about to bite her again. I bit into his side which effectively threw him out. While he was howling in agony, I went for the kill. I was a second too slow, and he dodged me. I ended up rolling to the tree painfully. He wasn't doing any better. He was bleeding out. My ability to ignore pain was also my greatest strength. I got up and went straight for the wolf again. This time I made sure not to miss.
I locked my teeth into his neck and tore at the flesh. The wolf cried out in agony but I didn't care. I left him to fall to the ground as he bled out slowly. He was struggling to breathe. It was only a matter of minutes before he shifted into his human form.
I turned to look at her. She was panting on the ground. She was watching me the entire time. She was afraid but there was something about her facial expression that made me uncomfortable. One of her hands was extended on the ground, almost as though she were reaching for me.
"Daniel!"
It was the sound of my mother's voice. She was running towards me. She was fast. She halted at the sight before her. To my mother, there was a dead wolf that now shifted back into human, and there was an innocent human girl injured.
"What's going on?" she asked. She dropped to the ground and gently touched the girl. She tossed shorts at me, but I didn't shift.
"Daniel?" my mother repeated.
I didn't shift back. I only stared at the human who was in pain. It actually hurt me to see her like that. She was crying badly, and I didn't know how to stop her tears. I went closer to her and lowered my head. I licked her knee to which she screamed. It was definitely broken.
"Why are you acting like that? You care about her."
I went over to the shorts and shifted back. My back was facing them. I pulled on the shorts and reluctantly turned around. She would see me for who I was. I would have to alter her memory. I would have to make her forget me again.
"Daniel, stop ignoring me. I'm your mother. At the least you can tell me why you caused bloodshed because you killed another Alpha!" my mom said.
"He was hurting her," I breathed.
"She's the daughter of Michael Desrosiers. This is his youngest daughter," she said.
I turned to look at her. The girl was laying there in silence. Her eyes were closing probably from exhaustion. She glanced at me only for a second, and her eyes went shut. I finally walked towards her, kneeling to lightly touch her face. Her face felt cold probably from all the running she did. It was a little cooler now than it was earlier, I couldn't imagine how long she'd been running. Her face felt sticky from the sweat that was starting to sit on her soft skin.
"Daniel?"
"She's just a girl."
"You can heal her. I haven't taught you how to heal injuries yet. I can show you later. For now, I will heal her for you," my mom whispered.
I watched as my mother lightly grazed her fingers against my mate's legs. She stopped at her knee and grabbed it. My mate's eyes shot open quickly, and she screamed in pain again. She was trying to fight my mother but my mother was unbothered. The energy that emitted from my mother's hands went to my mate's injured knee. I heard the sound of snapping which sounded more painful than before.
I placed my hand on my mate's cheek and her first reaction was to turn into my hand. She was crying softly now but didn't fight me. She panted again. Her eyes were falling shut once more. I was sure my mother healed her.
"She looks exhausted again," I said more to myself.
"She somehow outran an Alpha wolf. She's human. It will tire her," my mother reminded me.
"She's dirty. I can't even imagine how long she was running from him."
"She's a fighter."
I shook my head. "She's my priority. I need to make sure she's comfortable. She's with another man—" I stopped mid sentencing and the growls reverberated in my chest.
"Daniel, you're very concerned. You seem to know about her. How do you know?"
"I just do."
"Is there anything else you want to tell me," my mother began but stopped when she heard the rustling of the leaves.
"No."
She could only nod.
"Alpha Daniel," Wilson said respectfully. "We lost sight of you and couldn't trace the scents right away."
"It's fine. Someone dispose of that body elsewhere. I've other matters to attend to. Be discreet and don't make a mess," I said.
Wilson nodded. "And the girl?"
I was already lifting her into my arms. The electricity between us was stronger than anything I ever felt. She was warm and soft. Her head was rested against my bare chest. Her soft breathing was the only thing bringing me solace right now. Even her scent was enticing.
"I'll worry about her," I said as I walked away.
I gave no one the chance to ask me any more questions. I ran so I could bring my mate to a more suitable place. I brought her to my home. I lived alone and no one would be there to disturb her. She needed time to recover and rest. I didn't know how much time that would take.
It concerned me about how she even got so far in the forest in the first place. She should have never come here. I didn't even want to think about what would happen if I never showed up. My mate could have easily died and I would have been an Alpha that was bound to an eternity of loneliness.
I carried my mate to one of the guest rooms. I laid her down gently. She was completely still. If I didn't have enhanced senses, I couldn't tell she was still breathing. She looked so peaceful. While I left the room for a brief moment to grab a shirt, I heard a soft noise.
"Daniel," my mother said as she appeared in my room literally.
I growled at my mother out of instinct. "What are you doing here?"
Her appearance startled me which was saying a lot. I was usually in tuned to my surroundings. My mother was one of the few who could sneak up on me. I was surprised my father hadn't shown up yet. He was never too far from my mother.
"I understand you're upset, baby. I want to make sure you're okay," she said. I held up a hand, to stop her from continuing.
"Say nothing else," I mumbled.
"I need to teach you how to heal. What we are — we can't exchange or feed people our blood. Unlike the other Alpha's, you can't share your blood. You know this," she said.
"I'm aware."
"When you're trying to heal, your hand should always be on the individual. It's always better to touch their injury or if it's severe, you have to literally touch their heart. In this case, your mate's injuries aren't that extensive. You wouldn't have to break her chest to heal her," she finished.
"I don't know how to transform my energy into another person. I've only..." I couldn't even finish the statement.
The first time I exchanged and transferred energy was during sex. It was intense and nothing like I ever felt. I didn't know what was going on at the time. It was like a strong rush pushing through me. At the time, I didn't really care about a mate's or its importance. I didn't even know my mate until after. After that, I never did it for a bit.
I was probably celibate for a year and I broke the streak. I slept with other women to forget her, my mate. All my attempts were hopeless and didn't serve to benefit me at all. I had stopped for a bit again recently. I felt like I was betraying her every time I did it with someone else.
"You didn't know and I should have told you," my mother said.
"You should have," I agreed bitterly.
"I will not have you practice on this human. She's quite delicate," my mother added.
"What was she doing out here? Alone?" I asked quietly.
My mother shrugged. "Only she knows."
"How long do you think she will be out? Her family will look for her. I plan on returning her before they realize. I don't want to this turning into a big headline," I said as I sat on the bed.
"It'll be a while, Daniel. I will find your father in the meantime. Call me as soon as she wakes up. I'll alter her memories so she doesn't remember what she's seen."
My mother left shortly after. My mother was always trying to fix a mess that wasn't hers to begin with. What my mother didn't know was my ability to pick at a person's memory. I knew I got it from her, but I never told her I could do it. I had a habit of keeping secrets from my mother.
To the other packs, my mother was merely a human. To this pack, everyone saw her as their former Luna. To me, she was my mother and so much more.
That's how I became the miracle baby. I was my parents only biological child. I was something more than a werewolf. What I was would've made me an abomination to the werewolf community. Unlike other Alpha's, I was significantly stronger than them. I could command other Alpha's had I wanted to. If I was a normal werewolf, I wouldn't feel so displaced.
There was a sharp inhale.
I stood up quickly and backed away from my mate. I didn't want her to think I was planning on doing anything bad to her or anything creepy. It was already bad enough she was in a stranger's house. In her mind, she never met me because I always took her memory of me away. She'd be mortified to see me looming over her.
My mate shuffled in her sleep, but she didn't wake. It was odd how she was so responsive in her sleep. I could tell she was light sleeper, but considering the state she was in, she shouldn't have done any moving. She would have been too weak to do much of anything.
I had considered letting her stay here, but that thought only lasted for a fraction of a second. I knew the right thing to do was to actually leave her out in the forest. The idea might have seemed bad, but it was the best choice. It was the perfect idea because a mate was supposed to protect each other from harm, and I was. I did. All I had to do was leave her close to the road, enough that a person would see her and save her.
I would watch her from a distance. Even though what I was doing wasn't the most romantic gesture, I knew she would be safe. I'd have to call anonymously and say there was an unconscious girl. It was for the best.
Having someone else find her would be better than her waking up in a strangers house. As much as I wanted to keep her here, I didn't want to have her wake up to me-- a stranger. I wouldn't be able to stand the mortified look on her face when she saw she was in someone's bed.
So, I did exactly what I needed to do.
I brought my mate back into the woods. I was more discreet and made sure none of the pack members saw me. I was more stealthy than the rest of my members. As I carried my mate to the edge of the woods, I made sure to place her in the most noticeable spot. Cars would drive by and one would see her.
I touched her face gently. Her natural reaction was to turn towards my hand. Even in her sleep she could feel the tingles that came from her mate. She remained against my hand until I pulled away.
"I'll never do this to you again," I said quietly.
I hid a few feet away from her. My mate looked peaceful. I didn't like that I had to leave her there, but it was for the best. I remained at a distant, watching her. I stayed because I wanted to and because I had to make sure someone found her. It didn't take that long.
A car pulled on the other side of the road. I saw a woman coming out of the car. I'd recognize her from somewhere-- I think she was my mate's best friend. I didn't know how she was able to find my mate. She grabbed her phone and dialed the police. She was frantic, but as she was speaking to them, she was also looking around.
I felt like she knew someone else was watching her. It was me, but there was no way she would see me. She eventually stopped when she heard sirens. I knew it was my cue to leave. My mate was in good hands, and all I could do now was wait for the next time I saw her.
Whenever that was.
