the library
The huge chandelier swung from the ceiling, the light from the lamps glinting off it. It sparkled, shining tiny particles of light around the room. The sparkles hit the huge bookcases lining the walls, and glinted off the spines of the thousands of books stacked haphazardly in the cases.
The light shone down upon the heads of the people below, their heads bowed over books, or craning to see over the large stack of books in their arms. The people were of all ages, all shapes, all sizes, all colours, and sexualities. They read all sorts of different books, from high fantasy with dark covers to non fiction books about home decorating.
The lamplight spilled over the surface of the great borrowing desk. It shone from a lamp balanced precariously on a huge stack of books next to a small girl. It sparkled from a hanging lamp, dangling from a huge ladder leading up to the very top of the huge bookcases.
And everyone in the library, dear reader, looked unusually satisfied. Satisfied with what they were reading. They had satisfied looks on their faces. And the very small girl sitting next to the very large stack of books had a sweet little smile on her face.
The young lady at the borrowing desk was very busy, dashing backwards and forwards as she disappeared through a huge panelled door into the very depths of the library to retrieve things known only to those whose home it is. And although, dear reader, that is not you, it is, in fact, me. So I may share with you the secrets of the inner workings of the library, although I would encourage you not to go shouting around the very dark hidden things that this library may contain. The girl wore wonderful clothes, a combination of academic and dark gothic style. She looked up as the small girl approached the desk, and smiled a beaming smile up at her. The young girl reached up to the desk, and placed her huge pile of books down. She was one of the many people in the library who was smiling, although her smile had sadness behind it, glinting in her eyes.
The girl behind the desk reached across for the books, a gold pocket watch dangling from her pocket as she leaned forward. The small girl reached upward, a small card clutched in her hand. Although I may tell you the secrets of the library, I am forbidden to mention one thing, and this is what the small card contained.
And this is the story of the wonderful story and the lives, secrets, lies, loves, and emotions it carried within it’s towering brick walls
