chapter 1
Night drive
I had been working the night shift at work, start for 4pm, finish for 3am, the shift was a drag but I pottered in doing my usual welding and fabricating trailers for a good firm that treated its staff like people unlike some that treat them as numbers. The job in-tailed fabricating small parts into a much bigger and heavier metal trailer used for the base of some sort of oil rigging structure abroad.
It was a fairly new job and I enjoyed it but this night not so much, I would have felt the opposite to this if I had gotten some sleep during the day, but the water company has been working on some under ground pipes out front of my house for the past 3 days and with the yelling over the loud machinery the digger and what I think is drilling equipment I did not had much rest.
That aside I finished my shift and it said 3:02am on the clocking out machine on the wall as it makes this horrible beep noise when I scan my card and cringe at the sound that always goes straight through me. I walked to my car which was a mere 15meters away from the entrance of the building, I unlock it, hop in, throw my bag and jacket over the passenger seat, slouch back with my hands on my face I rub my eyes and sigh.
Just to get through the drive home, it was a 52mile round trip with 5 mile of motorway and the rest country lanes, I usually enjoy the country roads but how crumpled I felt right now I didn’t want to do anything silly, I would later learn to regret. I fired up the car and pulled out of the works car park, it was silent not a peep on the road and I thought great nobody to be stuck behind. so shouldn’t take me long to get home I approached the motorway took the slip road and carried on down it for the remaining 5 miles till I hit the country roads at the end.
