New Beginnings
It had been a week since the town meeting. The same day that Cole had declared to Anne that Gilbert had a crush on her. It hadn’t been something that she had put much thought into, thinking that Cole was trying to annoy her. That was until Bash and Mary’s wedding.
Anne had been swept up into the romance of the big day. It hadn’t helped that she was sat next to Gilbert for the service as they watched two people commit themselves to each other. Two people who wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. To grow and learn together and find happiness as a couple. Knowing that regardless of what happened, love would always be there. Her thoughts couldn’t help but stray.
Isn’t it absolutely romantical...
The wedding had finished, and Gilbert had caught Anne outside of the church. She blamed the sentimental mood the wedding had put her in as she ended up telling him about her future plans. His comments about romance though... Could that have been aimed at her? Anne wasn’t sure and she didn’t want to think that they were. There was no way that she could have any kind of positive feelings toward Gilbert Blythe, especially not romantic one. It didn’t make sense to her. He infuriated her in a way nobody else could but there were times when he would do something that would make Anne’s stomach flip. When he had helped to keep Miss Stacey as their teacher. Then there were all the times he had stood up against Billy Andrews and his friends when they made fun of Anne.
It didn’t matter anyway. Ruby was in love with Gilbert and had been long before Anne had moved to Avonlea. She would never betray one of her closest friends like that. So, whatever small, niggling feelings that sometimes paid a visit, Anne knew that she couldn’t breathe a word of them to anyone or risk be ousted for her group of friends. Friends that she had dreamed of having her whole life.
Cole had not even given her an explanation as to why he even thought that Gilbert might like her. He’d ran off before Anne was able to ask any questions. The Cuthberts had only made a fleeting stop to Aunt Josephine’s after the wedding and there was so much else that Anne wanted to talk to Cole about. Gilbert didn’t happen to be at the top of the list. Anne was more concerned about how Cole was settling in and if he liked it at Aunt Josephine’s. it brought her heart so much peace to know that he felt happy there. Anne still left with a heavy heart though, wishing that she could spend more time with Cole.
She could try and talk to Marilla but the last time she tried to bring up kissing it hadn’t exactly gone very well. Whatever feelings there may or may not have been between the two of them didn’t matter now though. Gilbert Blythe needed to be pushed to the back of her mind. Now that Anne was back in Green Gables and things had settled down again, she needed to tell Miss Stacey about her decided vocation and that was what she needed to focus on. Romance could wait but her vocation would not. More than anything though, Anne would definitely not let Gilbert Blythe, of all people, pull ahead of her in school.
Anne Shirley-Cuthbert had come to the realisation that she was just going to have to ignore Gilbert. That was the only thing that she could do. It wasn’t going to be very difficult. He was so caught up in becoming a doctor and teaching Bash about the farm, she was sure that their paths would barely cross. Especially with Anne being terribly busy all the time. It wouldn’t be difficult to dodge him at all.
