“Donna, get down here! It’s your first day of school and you’re already going to be late!” Shouted mother from the bottom of the staircase.
My name is Donna Golden. I’m 17 and from Handres, California. A town in Los Angeles. I’m the youngest of one sibling; my brother, Hunter. I’m going into my Senior year at my school, quite excited to finally finish. My brother is already in college. I’m 5’11 with lovely, long, golden brown hair and hazel eyes. I’m part British and part American, but my parents are Canadian. Well..my mother is Canadian. My father is British. I was just raised in California. I’m also on the cheer squad at my school! Go Huskies! (That’s our mascot). I’m a pretty open person. Honest with my feelings and careful with others. Except..I don’t really have anyone to open up to. Veronica Morales, the cheer captain; she’s not the nicest of girls. She could be more cunning and impatient. I don’t get along with her. Nor did I get along with her football captain boyfriend: Elias Somers. He was..hot, though. But I’ll introduce him later!
I scurried downstairs in a gray skirt and long sleeve, light blue shirt. I make my way to the kitchen, grab a buttered waffle from the tray and pick up my school bag from beside the front door. My father, Grant, shuffled happily over to me with a bright smile on his face.
“Oh, Donna! I’m so proud of you!” He exclaimed with outstretched arms. I hugged him and smiled.
“Thanks, pa. I appreciate it.” I replied.
“Have a wonderful year, darling. Get good grades, okay?”
“I promise I will, pa.”
In the kitchen, ma was wrapped tightly around Hunter with tears in her eyes.
“Oh, come on, ma! It’s not that bad. I’ll be back over break.” I heard Hunter say to her.
I stroked my palm down pa’s arm and stuffed my hands in the pockets of my skirt. At my school, it was like a college. We didn’t go home each day. Instead, we had dorms. Each dorm had two rooms, each with two beds. Two bathrooms, a living space, and a kitchen that me and my friend, Jasmine, always managed to fill up. And in our school, boys and girls were allowed to have a dorm together if they wished. Each year I always found a dorm with Jasmine, her boyfriend, Miguel, and twins, Aaron and Amari Damon. Now..Amari is Bisexual and has a preference for boys while Aaron is straight. I used to have a crush on Aaron. Not gonna lie, he was pretty cute. Not to Jasmine though, of course. She had Miguel. And I have to say this! Jasmine and Miguel are endgame. Why wouldn’t they be? They’ve been together since their Freshman year.
I called for Hunter and he made his way down the hallway. I ordered that we had to leave. I’d drive Hunter to college and then bring myself to school. Ma came down the hallway, sobbing. She smiled once she spotted the two of us.
“Aw..how much I love you guys. I can’t believe I had to do this so many years in a row. Have fun, kids. I’ll see you over break.”
Ma kissed me on the cheek and did the same with Hunter.
Let me introduce my family. Beginning with Ma (Darci). Ma is 6’2 and a year older than my father. She’s got my hair color with Hunter’s eyes (Chestnut brown). Ma is Canadian with a pure Canadian accent. She had been born and raised in Canada and moved to California when she moved out of her parents house at the age of 20. She had Hunter at the age of 22 and me at 24. Ma is kind and patient. A trustworthy person for sure. Really clever when it comes to engineering as well. Pa (Grant) is a year younger than ma. He’s got ash blonde hair and my eyes (hazel). He’s 6’1 and British, born in the U.K. and moved to California at the age of 19. Pa is patient as well. Loyal. Funny. Pa is a wonderful man who had a nursing major in college. He’s no longer a nurse, though. He preferred to spend time with me and Hunter so we didn’t grow up with a father who was barely home. And then you have Hunter. He’s a bit older than I am. 19 and in college. He’s 6’0 and looks just like ma. Hunter is Gay as well but without a boyfriend. And of course, I support Hunter. But..Hunter is a dark, impatient person. He likes to isolate himself. He plays football in college as well like he used to do in High School.
We headed out the door, waving to pa and ma as we left. I shut the door behind us and pa locked it. I took my keys from the pocket of my bag and unlocked the car. Hunter got into the passenger seat while I got into the drivers. We shut our doors and I powered up the car, putting my hands on the leather wheel. I backed up, out of the driveway, and started towards Hunter’s college.
“Hunter, you’ve gotta be more open to people. Get to know more people! Maybe you’ll get a boyfriend. You can’t be so isolated all the time.” I began.
“I can be as isolated as I wanna be.” Hunter responded, crossing his arms.
“Well, don’t you have a crush? Someone you think is cute?”
“Yeah..I think he’s straight, though!”
“Well then go to talk to him! You can’t know if you don’t ask.”
“I don’t wanna ask. Too nervous…”
“That’s because you’re constantly by yourself and not around anyone else speaking to them! You need to talk to people. And if you really want a boyfriend then actually speaking up is step one.”
“I don’t want to, Donna. I’m too..shy of a person. And if I did talk to them they probably wouldn’t like me because of how impatient I am..how..quick-tempered I am.”
“Then find someone who doesn’t mind that. Who loves you for who you are.”
“I’ve tried, okay? But nobody likes people who are as impatient as I am.”
He turned his head and looked out the window at the sun which was facing his direction, watching the cars pass by.
“Well..try your best because I can’t speak to you anymore until Christmas break starts. We’re here. Have fun, okay?”
He looked at me with a slight grin. “Okay.”
“Thank you. I’ll pick you up when break rolls around. But for now, I’m gonna be late and my teacher is gonna be mad, so I’m gonna go.”
Hunter shut the car door, swung his bag over his shoulder, waved back at me and eventually disappeared in the front doors. I drove off, finding my way to school. I found it, finally, and got out of the car then realized:
“Ugh..” I grunted, frustrated. “I parked next to Veronica.”
I recognized Veronica’s bright pink Tesla beside my small, worn-out Mazda. I ignored it, grabbed my bag and went inside. The line was greatly long and moved forward slowly. And of course..as I waited, Veronica stepped up behind me.
“Oh..” she mumbled. “It’s you.”
“It’s me.” I sighed.
I may not like Veronica..but..she was beautiful. A fierce looking girl. Her butt length blonde hair and wonderfully bright blue eyes. She was shorter than me; 5’8 with an athletic built body. She was American with a pure American accent. Veronica is straight and in a relationship with my first grade crush: Elias. And boy..did I still have a huge crush on him. He. Was. HOT!
I finally made it to the front of the line. The receptionist lady handed me my schedule, lunch period, ID card, and pointed to the dorm lists on the desk. I looked for the one with “Jasmine Aleise” on it. I spotted it. It read: Jasmine Aleise, Miguel Sarya and Jack Quinszey. Jack Quinszey? I wondered. Who was that? I’ve never heard of a Jack Quinszey before. I signed my name on the list and left the line, watching Veronica sign her name on the list that had Elias Somers on it.
At the second desk, I was handed my dorm keycard, snack bags, a couple of bath towels, and cups. I took a peek at the keycard number. Room B18. The same room I had with Jasmine and Miguel last year. I wandered around and eventually found the B dorms elevator. I stepped in with all the stuff in my arms and pressed the 9-18 button. It brought me upwards. The doors opened on the second floor and I stepped out. I looked at the sign: 9-13 to the left/14-18 to the right. So I went to the right.
I found my dorm, grabbed my keycard and slid it into the little slot to the right side of the door. A green light appeared and I headed in.
“Who’s here?” It was Miguel’s voice. His low-pitched, calm voice.
“It’s me, Miguel!” I responded. “Where are you?”
“To the right! You and Jasmine are on the left.”
“Thanks.”
I turned left down the hallway and made it to me and Jasmine’s side of the dorm. We had our own bathroom, sink, and bedroom. Jasmine wasn’t in there. I set the bath towels in the bathroom cupboard, cups on the sink, and snack bags in the drawers of our desk. A suitcase filled with bedding and other things was set beside both of our beds. Jasmine had already made our beds for ourselves.
“Hey, Miguel!” I spoke again.
“Yeah!?”
“Where’s Jasmine!?”
“Down at the cafeteria eating breakfast!”
I set my bag in the large desk drawer and went to meet Miguel. I headed into his bedroom.
“Oh. Hi, Donna!” He smiled once he spotted my figure in the door. “How was your summer?”
“It was great, actually. Hunter still isn’t talkative. What about yours?”
“We went to Mexico. Pretty great. Hey..do you know who-“
“Jack Quinszey is?” I finished. “No. I saw him on the dorm list. Never heard of him before. Maybe Jasmine has. We’ll have to ask her.”
The door opened.
“That’s gotta be her!” I exclaimed. And it was Jasmine. She ran up to me and hugged me.
“Wow, Donna! You look..did you dye your hair?” She questioned excitedly.
“I added streaks to it, yes. How was your summer?”
“Wonderful! I went to Mexico with Miguel’s family. Outstanding place.”
“Do you know who Jack Quinszey is?”
Miguel came out of his room to where me and Jasmine were standing.
“I don’t know. I saw his name on the list and wondered who he was. Has he been to the room yet? Apparently he’s our roommate.”
“I haven’t seen him.” Miguel answered, placing his hands in his pockets and waving back and forth on his heels. “The only other boys we’ve ever dormed with were Aaron and Amari. By the way, have you seen the twins?”
“Yeah. Amari was down on the football field early this morning. Aaron is at the baseball field.”
“Hm..I wonder who the twins are dorming with?” I wondered.
“Who knows.” Miguel shrugged his shoulder.
“Uhm..Donna..” Jasmine quivered for a second.
“What? Is something wrong?”
“Uhm..the twins dormed with Veronica and Elias.”
“Veronica!? Why? That girl is an evil beast.”
“Isn’t she?” Miguel grunted.
“I just said that..yes. I wonder why they chose Veronica and Elias.”
Jasmine shrugged.
“Who knows? I think the twins were getting tired of us, anyway.”
“Hm. Whatever. I guess we’ll just have to meet this Jack guy.”
“‘This Jack guy’?” Came a new voice. “Are you talking about me?”
We all turned to the door, confused. A boy stood there. It must’ve been Jack. He had wonderful, thick blonde hair and marble gray eyes. About an inch taller than myself with an American accent and fairly pale skin. He looked Asian and American mixed based on his face.
“Uh..wonderful to meet you guys. My name is Jack Quinszey.”
I smiled at him. “I’m Donna Golden! These are my friends Miguel and Jasmine. It’s wonderful to meet you too.”
“Great! Thanks for..accepting me. I’m gonna..go get changed.”
Jack walked in and closed the doors then headed into his and Miguel’s bathroom. He locked the bathroom door. I checked my watch: 8:00.
“Uh oh..” I said nervously.
“What is it?” Asked Jasmine.
“We’re late for class..what class do you guys have?”
Miguel answered with:
“English.”
Me and Jasmine had Chemistry.
“Yeah..the chemistry classroom is halfway across campus. See you later, Miguel.”
Jack came out of the bathroom.
“Where are you guys going?” He questioned.
“Class. We’re about to be late. What class do you have?”
“English.”
“You can go with Miguel then. He has English, too. We’ll meet you later, okay?” Said Jasmine.
“Okay.”
“Alright..” I spoke. “Let’s go before I get a letter from my ma because I was late to class on my first day.”
