‘Poetry, words written from the heart of man. Pen to paper, heart to hand, soul to mind. It is a perfect way to express affection, without speaking out in normal dialogue. I feel like this poem here can express everyone’s emotion at this service today.’ M read, smelling like old cigars smoked by the oldest tongue.
M fumbled around in his expensive blue over coat and pulled out a folded and scrappy piece of paper. Bond couldn’t care less about the funeral. Just another dead MI6 agent who no one knows the name of, Bond thought. M opened up his large mouth and started to read ‘Don't cry for me now I have died, for I'm still here I'm by your side,
My body's gone but my soul is here, please don't shed another tear,
I am still here I'm all around, only my body lies in the ground.
I am the snowflake that kisses your nose,
I am the frost, that nips your toes.
I am the sun, bringing you light,
I am the star, shining so bright.
I am the rain, refreshing the earth,
I am the laughter, I am the mirth.
I am the bird, up in the sky,
I am the cloud, that's drifting by.
I am the thoughts, inside your head,
While I'm still there, I can't be dead.’
Applause rang from every direction in the National Church of England, tears being shed and hugs being shared. But Bond didn’t participate in anything. Bond had no reason to. He had no life long partner or family to share affection with. All he had was a corpse, a corpse of someone he had once loved but had been taken away from him. But Bond had gotten over that a long time ago. Bond heard footsteps coming from the trees he was stood by.
‘James!’ A nearby voice said.
‘Money penny.’
‘You are never that cheerful are you?’
‘It’s a bloody funeral Money penny.’
‘I know, I know. But still, we can’t be depressed the whole damn thing can we?’
‘Cut to the chase, what do you want?’ Bond eagerly asked.
‘Well, these are M’s words not mine before you get angry but…you have…’
‘What?’
‘…been dropped as a double 0.’
‘Nice jokes penny. What is the actual news?’ Bond replied.
‘It isn’t a joke James, I’m sorry.’
Bond looked down at the ground, confused. It also started to rain, the drops hitting his dark hair and his slick black funeral suit. Instead of trying to edge a response from Money penny, he ignored her and walked to his Aston Martin DB5.
‘James! Come back!’ She screamed.
‘You won’t be seeing me for a while.’ Bond shouted back.
‘No James please…
He was already gone. The engine turned on, smoke blowing in Money Penny’s face.
Bond picked up a CD from his glove box. It was a Louis Armstrong song, We have all the time in the world. One of Bond’s favourite songs, the one played at his wedding. ‘We have all the time in the world
Time enough for life to unfold
All the precious things love has in store
We have all the love in the world
If that's all we have, you will find
We need nothing more
Every step of the way
Will find us
With the cares of the world
Far behind us
We have all the time in the world
Just for love
Nothing more, nothing less
Only love
Every step of the way
Will find us
With the cares of the world
Far behind us, yes
We have all the time in the world
Just for love
Nothing more, nothing less
Only love
Only love’
Bond turned into Heathrow airport, still surprised about his demotion. Bond walked through the glass doors straight to the reception area.
‘Hello sir! What may I help you with today?’ The young woman at the desk asked.
‘I’d like to book a flight to Cuba, I’ve got a suite there already.’ Bond replied.
‘Do you? Well what is your name sir?’
‘Bond, James…
‘Got it!’
‘Oh great. Could you hold onto this for me?’
Bond took out a bit of paper and wrote, ‘I retire’ on it.
‘I think a friend of mine will be coming here. Could you show this to him?’ Bond finished.
‘Sure thing James!’
‘Call me Bond, James…
‘Bye Bond!’
Bond put down his head in annoyance and walked to gate 7 where his flight would await. This was a chance for rebirth for Bond, leaving all of this rubbish behind and starting something new in Cuba. Bond reached for his smart phone and blocked every contact he had linked to MI6. M, Money Penny, Tanner and Q included.
‘Mr Bond, your flight to Cuba is ready!’ A flight attendant told him.
‘Thank you Ma’am.’
Bond hopped onto the plane, where he would never be seen again.
