Chapter One

“Trivia…Trivia” I hear my name but in the faintest of tones. I feel like I’m about to pass out so I close my eyes and let darkness suck me in.

“Trivia, wake up!” I heard my mom’s voice coming from the entrance of my room. I woke up immediately so as to not give her the chance to hit me. It was Christmas morning but I’d be damned if she’d let me sleep in.

I stood up and she was gone before I could say good morning. I contemplated on going back to bed but I decided against it. I don’t want to be beaten or yelled at on Christmas morning. I quickly wore my oversized sweatshirt and baggy shorts— which are not close to being my size— and also put my hair in a bun. Once I got out of my bedroom, I walked towards the kitchen to check the time and it was 4:35 am. Of course, my older siblings were asleep. It’s no surprise.

“Good morning mom” I greeted her. “Merry Christmas”.

“Go wrap those things in those bags.” She said while pointing to bags near the decorated Christmas tree that was beside the television. Do it quickly before Jess and Cece wake up. I am going back to bed” she said, totally ignoring my greetings. “When you are done, do the dishes too.”

“Okay,” I replied. Tears were on the brink of bursting out but I held it back. I wonder what it would take for my mother to ever love me and take me as her daughter or even human.

Present Day

I opened my eyes and gasped for air. My eyes quickly went shut because of all the bright white bulbs facing me. I could see people with blue masks and scrubs surrounding me. I’m sure they are here to kill me. But, what have I done to them?

“Please don’t kill me. I have money. I’ll give you money.” I yelled while trying to pull my hands away from who was holding me.

I opened one of my eyes to look at my hands and I saw that I was restrained to the bed I was in. Why was I on a bed?

“Trivia? Do you know where you are?” one of the killers asked me. I look around me. I felt drowsy again and knew that I would pass out soon. I tried my best to stay awake. I could smell the medicine they had been injecting me with. I lazily opened my eyes again and I could see all the pity eyes staring at me. Where am I? I kept trying to keep my eyes open. I have to be strong. I can’t let these people kill me. I was crying, trying to stay awake but I couldn’t.

“I’m going to prom with Sebastian!” my sister yelled to the person she was speaking to on the phone as she walked across the living room passing me intentionally. She knew I had a crush on Sebastian and really wanted to go to the prom with him. I don’t blame her though, she is more beautiful than I am. She is the photocopy of our Mother. Light-skinned, thin lips, slim body shape, longer and lighter hair. Unlike me; I am the only dark-skinned person in my family. I would think that I look like my dad but I don’t know because I have never seen him before. I have more body fat than my sister and based on experience that is less attractive for people. My hair is shorter because I couldn’t handle it long and Mom takes better care of Cece than she does of me. Cece doesn’t really have to try as hard to go on a date with any boy in our high school.

I sat down on the lounge chair in the living room, folding my legs up and hugging it towards myself. I could smell food from the kitchen that made my stomach growl.

“Trivia, what is your sister planning to wear to prom?” My mom asked as she walked out from the kitchen. “I know you are not going.”

“I don’t know what she wants to wear,” I said.

“This means you don’t care about your sister,” she said. “Why can’t you ask her what she wants to wear to the prom? You are sitting there doing nothing,” she continued.

I kept quiet, not facing her and staring at my toes hoping that this phase will pass soon just like the other times that she had questioned me about my concern for my sister. She went behind the chair, slapped my neck and walked out. I assume that was for ignoring her question. Well, I’m used to it so I don’t react.
