Chapter 1 - The Alpha’s Surprise
~Millennia~
All my life I had been taught that I had to be fearless and smart. That was exactly what I was doing at this very moment. I growled at the rogues in front of me, bearing my white fangs, unlike the rogues who were frightened, not knowing what they were meant to do. The faint light from the moon allowed me to see their brown, untidy coats and confused scared faces. Serves them right for trespassing. I could hear the rest of my pack nearing in, it would only be a few moments before I was accompanied.
One of the three stepped forward and let out a weak growl. That was a very bad move. I barked viciously and leaped forward snapping the wolf’s neck. The snap was loud and terrifying enough to scare the other two to run deeper into the forest. I dropped the corpse on the floor and chased after them. I was quickly joined by wolves of the Crescent Moon pack. The beating hearts of the rogues were loud and fast. I had spent a week trying to find these rogues. They had been stealing from my pack and I was not going to let them do it much longer. Call me short-tempered but what would you have done? We chased them to the river where our border lay. The rogues ran through it and disappeared into the other half of the forest that belonged to our neighboring pack. I dug my heels into the dirt to slow me down and I came to a halt by the river’s edge and was followed by the rest of the pack. All but one followed my actions. I saw a wolf run across the river.
Jenna! Come back! I yelled at her but she did not listen.
Go back to the house, I’ll go get her. I instructed the other pack members and then ran across the freezing river. Water droplets clung onto me as I ran through the forest that I knew so much about yet was so oblivious to. I followed Jenna’s scent overcoming all the obstacles in my way from dodging trees and jumping over boulders.
A meadow of tall grass came into view and the closer I got, the more my eyes captured. Jenna’s grey coat was visible and she was surrounded by other unknown brown coats. A wolf with a coat as black as shadows approached her, at that moment, I ran past Jenna and put myself in between her and the alpha.
You are surrounded, stand down! He barked at me.
Better idea, why don’t you let us leave in peace? I answered back. His eyes became wider.
You are in no position to negotiate. Stand down and shift or I will kill you. He used his Alpha tone on me. I was not about to surrender but I had to distract the Alpha and his pack members long enough for Jenna to escape.
Fine. We submit. I lowered my body onto the floor and made my neck visible – the ultimate sign of submission. The alpha slowly approached me and when he was close enough, I launched at him.
Jenna, run! I instructed her while the alpha and his wolves were distracted by my attack. I did not look to see how far she had gotten because the alpha and I were currently wrestling each other on the ground.
Suddenly I felt a needle penetrate my skin and I looked at the source of the pain and saw a blue tranquilizer drat pocking out of my back. I felt myself lose consciousness fast and the last thing I remember seeing before slipping into the darkness my eyelids brought were the paws of the alpha.

I woke up and slowly sat up trying not to make the spinning in my head worse. I focused my eyes on my surroundings which were unfamiliar and so were my clothes. I slowly climbed out of the warm bed allowing the white covers to slip off me to reveal my body. I analyzed what was on my body - I wore a black shirt and shorts and my gold chain shimmered around my foot.
The white wooden door behind me opened. I spun around on my heels to face a short girl with short raven black hair wearing similar clothes.
“My alpha wants to talk to you,” she said confidently and walked off into the hallway.
I did not say a word as she led us down multiple corridors, each had large sandblasted windows along one or both sides of the walls - allowing the sun to brighten the corridors. The floors were hardwood panels and stained a rich tanned chocolate brown that contrasted with the white walls. If there were no windows on the walls, the walls had paintings of wolves and the forest in which the two packs were located. The paint smelled like acrylic and the brush strokes were fine and sophisticated almost feminine. They had frames made of wood that matched the floors giving the corridors a more uniform look.
She brought us to a set of double doors made of black wood with gold knobs. They had carvings of wolves and just below the frame was the word “αλφα” -Greek for Alpha - in gold metal letters. She opened it revealing a library. We were standing on what appeared to be the second floor of the library
Unlike the rest of the house which used a modern aesthetic, this room looked like it belonged in an ancient castle. The floor had become a dark faded brown and the shelves also possessed that weathered look. There were huge glass doors in the middle of the room that connecting the floor and ceiling. The huge black curtains at either side blocked the full view but I could see a balcony and the forest outside. There was a piano at the base of the doors and was a shiny sleek black. In the middle of the room were books stacked from the floor to the roof on shelves. In the middle of the room was a table with books opened on it.
“Wait here,” she said and left the room closing the heavy doors behind her. I was standing alone at the table of books. I sighed and through sheer boredom started looking at the open pages. They looked old containing photos of forests and wolves.
“Let’s begin with the reason you were trespassing,” I heard the same voice from yesterday. It was stern and belonged to a man.
“I was not trespassing, I was retrieving my pack member who chased two rogues into your territory,” I did not bother looking up.
"Your pack member?” I did not have to look at him to know a smirk was playing on his lips.
“Oh, where are my manners, I am Alpha Millennia Silver of the Crescent Moon pack,” I looked in the direction of the man.
Mate! My wolf, Lucena, screamed. His blue eyes grew wide with mine.
“Now this is something interesting,” he chuckled. It was dark and deep.
“Well that depends how you look at it,” I straightened up crossing my muscular arms across my chest.
“How so?” He took slow steps towards me.
“I am a girl and not just any ordinary girl, I am an Alpha,” I said with confidence not leaving my voice once.
“Fortunately I like extraordinary girls or should I say women,” he said charmingly. I would have fallen for it but I just was not interested.
But I am. Lucena sounded exactly like a love-sick girl.
And you know you are too. She giggled. Lucena was the complete opposite of me.
“Even your wolf agrees,” I had not noticed he was looming over me. His height did not intimidate me even if he was a head taller. His eyes were now pitch-black like the starless night sky.
“You..” I felt his sharp fangs piercing themselves through my skin that was bare. The pleasure was undeniably great yet I was not satisfied with being marked by an unknown random alpha just because I am his mate.
I tried to push his heavy build off mine but he would not budge. I then decided that there was only one thing that may just work. I raised my leg and extended it forward at the speed of lightning towards his crotch area.
He was taken off guard and his grip loosened. I quickly pushed him away and he fell to the floor a few meters in front of me. I could feel the blood trickling down my back.
“How dare you mark me!” My voice boomed through the library.
“I have every right to, love.” He sounded angry. He should not be the one pissed. I wanted to teach him a lesson. He got to his feet quickly, his eyes burned with anger. The door was behind him leaving me trapped in the huge library. I glanced to my right and saw a window. Perfect.
“I would not do that if I were you, we are on the third floor,” he smirked.
“Good thing I’m not scared of heights,” I answered lunging into a sprint to the window. I jumped through it, shattering the glass. I hit the floor and did not waste a moment and started running. I ran into the nearby woods. I hid behind a tree to try and get some air. My muscles hurt but I was not just going to sit here.
I did not recognize where I was, I needed to shift so that I could find and follow Jenna’s scent back to the pack but I would give my location away.
See, you should have just stayed with him. Lucena suggested.
Shut up, Lucena. I don’t care what you want right now, I need to get back. I scolded her.
He knows where to find us, remember. She made a good point. I had been so silly into telling him which pack I was from.
Lucena this is not up for debate! As I argued with my wolf, a howl was made in the distance. Shit. I thought to myself.
I quickly shifted and caught Jenna’s scent rather quickly. I followed it in a sprint. I could hear wolves behind me.
Millennia, they’re gaining! Lucena sounded worried. I sped up and then I heard a river. Almost there. I jumped into its cold water and ran to the other side. I did not just stop there, I kept running. My feet hit the ground with loud thuds and my heart was beating in my throat and my muscles ached. I saw the packhouse.
I ran to the back where the open double doors. I made my way inside. I shifted back into my human form. The tiles below me were cold like ice which helped the pain in my muscles. Last time I jump through a window.
Yeah, no jokes. Lucena commented. I just rolled my eyes. I slowly stood up. I walked over to a locker with the number 1 on it. I unlocked the combination of the steel lock. I opened it revealing a set of clothes that one of the Omegas put in. I grabbed it and quickly got dressed.
I left the room and walked out into a corridor. I walked up the stairs at the end of it and it was not before long I heard footsteps.
“Alpha Millennia,” I heard a pack member greet. I smiled and nodded in their direction. I eventually found myself in my room on the highest floor.
I closed the door behind me locking it to ensure no one walked in on me. I stood in front of the mirror and then removed my shirt over my head. His mark was deep in my skin and it was really obvious at the base of my neck I felt like murdering him with my bare hands. No one touched me without my consent. I covered it with my dark brown hair. My hair was always tied up so that people could see me clearly but today my hair covered my mahogany eyes and small face.
Calvin. I mind-linked my Beta.
Oh Alpha, thank the gods. I smiled at his little response. He was my best friend that always knew how to help me rule the pack. When we were younger, he knew I would be Alpha but never told me so, when I found out I was angry with him but forgave him because my parents had asked him not to say anything about it. I gave him the Beta title not because I felt bad for being angry at him but because he was the only person that believed in me my whole life. He always stood by me. I dug around in my drawer trying to find concealer when I heard my doors open. I turned around quickly to find myself in a pair of strong arms. His embrace kept me made me feel at home. His mint and earth scent was strong.
“I thought something had happened,” he pulled away looking at me with relief. I peered over his shoulder to see a closed door.
“I would not jump to conclusions so quickly.” I smiled dryly. His eyes grew with concern as his face hardened at my words.
“What happened?” He asked with worry. I took a deep breath and told him about my little encounter with the Alpha next door. He kept a stern face the whole time while our eyes were locked with the only movement between us was the movement of my mouth.
“So he marked you,” that did not sound like a question but rather self-reassurance. I brushed away my hair from the base of my neck revealing the deep mark. Calvin took a step back in shock as he straightened. I bite my lip and put the hair back.
“Well?” Calvin always had something to say so this silence between the two of us was unusual. It was not like him to be quiet. I could see the uneasiness in his eyes. He always believed I had no mate considering I was independent and that it was never my priority, unlike some Alphas who spend years trying to find their mate. I guess that was the reason I never looked, I felt that my mate would find me and that was exactly what happened. A knock came from my door turning my attention to a girl who stood there, Alex. She looked like she had just run with the sweat trailing down her body.
“Alpha, there are wolves on the west borders demanding your presence.” She explained her reason for disturbing my conversation with my Beta. If she was an ordinary wolf, I would have yelled at her but she was not. She was my third in command. The west border was where the river separated my pack from my mate’s. I frowned at her explanation. I was not up to the challenge of talking to their Alpha for a second time today but I had to keep the peace.
“I’m coming,” I began walking to the exit where Alex stood when Calvin grabbed my arm.
“I need to tell you something,” his voice was stern and voiced seriousness but it had to wait. I was wasting time standing here.
“It can wait, tell me when I get back,” I said and left the room in a hurry. Alex and I ran through the house to the door and shifted as our feet hit the grass and ran off into the forest to the west borders where the others were.
