Chapter 1 - Tasting Euphoria
Book 1 in the series - Enjoy!
Adella:
It was meant to be a fun night out on the town with some of my closest friends. A way to forget my most recent break-up with my now ex, Justin and the earth-shattering pain that went along with it.
'That bastard… that fucking cheating prick!'
I hope he and Brittany are happy together. They deserve one another, that’s for sure.
With my heart already torn into more than a thousand tiny pieces I honestly hoped that my friends could deliver on their promise of a memorable night out.
I wanted to get absolutely wasted and just dance the night away without a care in the world.
Due to the breakup, I felt hollow.
Used.
Worthless.
Maybe I just needed to feel alive again.
Little did I know, my entire life would soon change as I was unknowingly led down a dark and dangerous path, into a world that would open my eyes for good.
Allowing me to see a whole new world… a world that I could never have imagined even existed.
A world of the undead.
One thing was for certain; tonight would indeed be a night that I would never be able to forget.
Zain:
The nightclub is filled to the brim with hundreds of intoxicated humans in all shapes and sizes.
They’re all drinking heavily and dancing the night away beneath the menacing strobe lights.
Partying on around us with absolutely no clue of the danger that we pose to them.
I can hear the pulse of the brunette woman standing closest to me, throbbing over and over loudly within my head and I grit my teeth together fighting to gain control of myself.
It has after all been over eight hours since my last feed and I can feel the urge creeping back as I intentionally turn my head away from her and focus on something else.
I tell myself that this is not the time, nor the place to succumb to such desires.
Besides, I have a mission to complete.
Tonight, my fellow Vamperial Hunters and I are on the hunt for blood. Human blood to be exact.
And it would seem that we’ve hit the jackpot with this place.
“Zain, red-head at your three o’clock.” Jarred leans in and speaks into my right ear over the roaring music surrounding us.
Any human wouldn’t have been able to hear his words over the thundering bass of this place, but we vampires have special abilities.
Heightened senses, which includes exceptional hearing.
My glowing neon blue eyes immediately glance across towards the direction he’d suggested and fixate on a tall red-haired woman giggling with several of her friends seated around a large sofa.
They appear to be enjoying an array of colourful cocktails, filling their systems with alcohol and tainting their precious blood.
There are six of them by my count, and each one is different in appearance. They all look highly intoxicated by the way they are laughing and staggering around the place.
A perfect target one would suggest.
I smirk in satisfaction and turn back to face the others for a moment.
A single nod of my head is the signal for them to make their move as both Leo and Jarred nod before heading over to introduce themselves.
Our plan is simple.
Leo and Jarred are bait to first infiltrate the group of women and then lead them outside with promises of a party they can attend elsewhere.
Once the girls are all outside, they are ushered into the limousine already waiting for them at the curb.
Finally, as we depart each of the women are then sedated for the long drive back to the Vamperial City.
The plan is fool proof.
It’s worked more times than I can count, and we’re always careful never to do it more than once in the same location.
In all the years I’ve been doing my job I’ve never once been caught or questioned by any of their kind.
It only takes a matter of minutes before both Leo and Jarred are happily drinking away with our targets, and as I watch on from my position I have to admit, those bastards are good at what they do.
The players.
It appears the infiltration stage of our plan is complete.
Time to move on.
I signal for the others to head outside and ensure that everything is prepared.
Finally, I make my move in through the pulsing crowd of nightclubbers to go and join them.
Easy peasy…
Adella:
Once I have finished fixing my makeup in the nightclub bathroom, I make my way back out, manoeuvring throughout the inebriated patrons until I can see my own group of friends.
Smiling and waving at Stephanie, I notice that there are now two rather handsome-looking men drinking with them and I pause in hesitation.
‘Since when was tonight about hooking up? I thought guys were off the menu.’
I frown at the idea of meeting guys so soon after my break-up.
The last thing I wanted to do was talk with guys on my night out.
I feel gutted and raw right now as I simply stand there watching on from where I am, at a distance away.
But after a moment of trying to compose myself, I finally decide to brush off the feeling and continue making my way over to join them at our table.
Why should I feel this way?
Maybe hooking up tonight would be a great idea after all.
As I’m walking along deep in thought, I suddenly run directly into what feels like a solid wall in front of me.
Whatever it is, it knocks me off my feet and I begin falling downward towards the sticky floor.
‘Yuck!’
I gasp in surprise and terror as I expect to land on my side against the ground, but something strange happens as I close my eyes and wait for the inevitable to occur.
Opening my eyes once more, I can see the floor beneath me but for some reason I’m no longer falling.
It’s then that I feel the pair of cold hands wrapped around both my upper arms and glance up into the brightest pair of blue eyes I’ve ever seen before in my life.
They look incredible.
Unlike any eyes I’ve ever seen before.
Maybe they’re contacts.
And his face… it’s too perfect to be real.
Handsome is an understatement. His hair is short, spiked up and a dark brown colour which almost looks black in the darkened nightclub.
He has stubble covering his jaw and chin and his lips…
Whoa.
I could kiss those lips for days.
Suddenly realising that we’re not moving, either one of us, I shake my head to clear my thoughts and clear my throat as I lean in to try and speak to him over the thumping music.
“Uh, thanks.”
Then he smiles and my heart melts. My entire body feels warm and I feel something ignite within me.
‘How is this guy so handsome?’
As he leans in close enough to kiss my cheek, he finally speaks and I tremble at the sound of his voice. It’s deep yet smooth as silk.
“That was a close one.” he muses.
Caught in some kind of trance, I do nothing but stare back at him as his woodsy cologne floods into my nostrils, causing me feelings I never thought I’d be feeling this soon.
Especially tonight.
Then he does something unusual.
He appears to sniff the air for a moment before glancing down at my hand.
It is only now that I feel the sudden wave of pain flooding over me, and I groan while cradling my injured hand with the other as he helps me back up onto my feet to stand.
I’ve somehow cut my hand and its bleeding.
‘Great… that’s certainly attractive.’
The people surrounding us don’t seem to notice what’s happening between me and this handsome stranger as he continues to fuss over me for some unknown reason.
‘What is he doing?’
He reaches out and takes my injured hand in his, forcefully but gently enough not to harm me. And I allow him to.
He then pulls it in closer towards him to get a better look at my injury under the strobe lights.
“What are you doing?” I ask, but I have no idea if he can hear me.
The music is so loud right now, thumping away in the background of our attempted conversation.
My eyes also move toward my injured hand to assess the damage, and I furrow my brows when I see the large gash I have somehow managed to receive from hitting the corner of the bench.
‘Of course. That’s just my luck.’
Blood is seeping out from the open wound and it has already started to bruise.
“Ouch.” I mutter to myself in pain, pursing my lips tightly together and frowning.
He looks around for a moment, then pulls me along by my hand, across towards a vacant seat not too far away.
I follow along like a lost kitten, unsure as to why this handsome stranger would give a damn about my injury.
‘Why is he doing this?’
Before I know it, the handsome stranger has me seated and crouches down to my level, still cradling my hand as he looks me dead in the eyes.
He leans in to speak into my ear once again.
“That looks incredibly painful.” he announces, his eyes lowering towards my wound.
“I’ll find something to stop the bleeding… wait here.”
I nod, still a little confused by all this as I begin to feel my warm blood trickling down the side of my hand and onto my lap.
‘Shit! Not on my dress. That’ll stain!’
I watch as he then stands and makes his way across towards the bar.
‘What is going on?’
Zain:
‘Crap, crap, crap!’
Just what I need right now.
I’m in the middle of an important mission and now due to my clumsiness I’m having to care for some stranger who bumped into me and hurt herself.
This is the last thing I need right now.
In all honesty, I should just walk off and get on with my part in the mission.
It’s not like I’ll ever see this human again.
With a large huff, I stand at one of the many bars located within the nightclub, waiting for someone to come and serve me.
Maybe they have a first-aid kit in behind the bar that I can use.
I finally get the attention of the bar staff by waving and then explain the situation.
I tell her that I need a first-aid kit and she smiles, nodding her head.
I watch as she then proceeds to search under the counter for a minute or two. And while she does I take a quick look over at the human that I injured.
Just to make sure she’s still there where I left her.
Yep, still there.
Good.
I then glance over at the target’s table and see that Leo and Jarred have already worked their magic perfectly.
That was quick!
Those cocky bastards are already walking the entire group of girls towards the club’s exit for the next phase of our plan.
Which means I’m needed out front.
‘Fuck!’
I need to hurry and catch up with them.
To put it simply, I’m running out of time.
Suddenly the woman working behind the bar finally stands from beneath the counter and hands me the first-aid kit I had asked for.
She smiles at me and I nod my head in appreciation, taking it from her and turning to head back over to treat the human.
It shouldn’t take long, right?
Wipe up the blood, a quick band-aid and we’re done. Then I’m out of here.
Easy.
As I begin weaving through the crowd headed in the human’s direction, I can smell the scent of fresh blood coming from my hand.
It fills my nostrils and without thinking I instinctively lift up my hand and suck off the delicious fluid from the surface of my pale skin.
And that’s when everything changed for me.
The taste…
The wave of euphoria…
The power…
I felt it all within a matter of mere seconds washing over me like a tidal wave of delectable perfection.
At the very moment her blood touched my tongue I am suddenly re-energised like never before.
Filled with an incredibly powerful surge of energy, heightened senses and a strength unlike any other, I have never felt more alive than back when I was human.
‘It’s unbelievable!’
My eyes glow even brighter than they would normally and I take in a deep breath, exhaling with exhilaration at the sensation I am now experiencing.
’Holy shit... her blood… it’s euphoric!’
Having paused after the sensations suddenly hit me all at once, I now know what I need to do.
Those women we had targeted initially can wait.
‘I need to capture this woman!’
I begin pushing my way back through the drunken crowd towards where I had left the mysterious human but to my frustration when I arrive in the same spot, I find her seat now empty.
She’s gone.
‘Shit!’
‘Where did she go?’
I desperately look around in each direction one at a time, with my improved eye-sight carefully scanning the crowd, searching for her as the humans unknowingly dance about around me.
‘I must find her.’
Humans with her gifted ability are incredibly rare nowadays and we vampires haven’t managed to find one in over a decade!
Bringing her in would change my entire life.
I could even get a promotion!
I move about the crowd of sweaty humans, having completely forgotten about my original mission to kidnap the group of female humans as planned.
It seems that I have a more important mission to complete now.
I must find that woman and gift her to the Vampire King.
