Arrival at Simbi

Once, an old woman arrived at a place called Simbi on the edge of a great Lake. Her clothes were in rags, her body was thin, and her face was ugly and wrinkled. As she walked into Simbis thunder echoed in the hills behind her, for it was the beginning of the rainy season.

When he saw the Old woman arrive, the chief drank deep from his calabash, and said something to his companions. They all laughed.

"What brings you here, old woman," he shouted rudely.

"Oh sir!" she replied." I beg you let me shelter here, for the rainy clouds are gathering and soon it will rain."

The chief looked at the old woman in anger and amazement.

"There is no place here for people like you!" he shouted, push off."

The old woman had no alternative. The people of Simbi laughed and pointed as she wearily walked up the hill away from Simbi.

On the Outskirts, there lived a poor widow. She took pity on the stranger, and welcomed her into her small house.

"All I have is a little porridge," said the widow."But you are welcome to share it with me."

The old woman was moved by the widow's kindness. She sat down and told her what had happened. Then, lowering her voice, she said,

"You donot know me, do you? My name is Wuon Koth, and I came here to give the people of Simbi the power to make rain. But fortunately I discovered in time that they did not deserve it. They ill -treated me, treated me very badly and because of this I shall destroy them. But you, my good friend, do not deserve to die. Come with me!"
