Babysitter

Coraline paced around her apartment, talking on the phone. Her older brother on the other end of the line. She walked from her bedroom, to the bathroom, to the kitchen, and the living room. She suddenly stopped. Listening to the sound of her brother's words, trying to comprehend them, on the other end of the phone line.

"What?... what?" She asks, "I can't understand you. I-"

Beep, beep.

"I can't understand what you're saying... James? James?"

Ding dang darn darn dang!, she thinks.

There is a knock on the door, and she rushes to answer it. It's Harmony, the woman, that is paying her to baby sit her young, 8 year old son.

Coraline takes the boys hand, and smiles. She helps him get set up with, snacks and TV, on the big plush rocker, right beside the couch, in her living room. She then goes to talk to Harmony, who has been watching, worriedly.

"Coraline, I-" Harmony starts.

"I know. Your scared for your son. Leaving him with a fourteen year old, isn't the best idea, in your opinion, But you also know... that I've baby sited Carlos numerous times before! He's safe with me. I promise."

"No, no, no. It's not that, I just-" she sighs, takes in a deep breath, lets it out, then takes in another huge amount of air, that seems like two hole gallons, then starts speaking very quietly, and very, very fast, "It's just, that he's been acting very, strange lately, and I'm scared, for him. Yes, you've gotten that part right."

She stops talking as Carlos steps out, "My movie's over!" he says.

"Ok, go sit down, and eat your cookies." says Harmony.

"Ok..." he says a little bit dim.

I finally convince Harmony that Carlos will be 'alright', and she grabs her bag, starts for the door, then suddenly stops. "Remember, if he acts, even the least bit strange... then you know my number. Call it."

Then she steps out of the apartment, and is gone. Coraline can hear Harmony's footsteps, all the way down the staircase, she can hear Harmon's car door slam shut, her car start, and pull out of the drive.

Caroline went back inside. She played another movie for Carlos, and she then, fell asleep.

YukkeTee: This isn’t just a romance. It’s the kind of slow-burn, messy kind of love that feels real—where two people carry scars and walls, and still choose each other anyway. The tension isn’t just between them; it’s in the quiet moments, the way they fumble through vulnerability, and the small, unspoken act...

Neenee73: The author managed to weave instant tension and mystery from the get go. It was a balancing act that kept me guessing and made everyone look like they could be a villain which is on par with the great writers of mystery like Agatha and Doyle. I was jumping at every creak. If you like tension in ever...
