Chapter 1 ~Avalon~

Avalon is a sophomore in highschool and it’s her first day. She wakes up at 8:00 am from her mom screaming her name.

“AVALON!” Her mother screams, “IT’S YOUR FIRST DAY AND YOU ARE ALREADY LATE!”

Avalon rolls over and checks the time. “Damn it,” she whispers under her breath. She slowly crawls out of her bed and shuffles to her dresser sitting in the corner of her room. Avalon sneers remembering how her and her mom were supposed to paint the stupid pink dresser. Her mom doesn’t remember anything. Avalon yanks the top drawer open and pulls out a beat up, oversized t-shirt and a ripped pair of jeans. She pulls off her old clothes and slowly slides on her new ones.

“I should have showered,” Avalon says to herself. She hasn’t had the energy to. Ever since it happened. It’s too hard for her to think about. Avalon ties her long brown hair into a messy bun, flopping to the side. She creeps her way out of her bedroom and down the hall into the bathroom. She slams the door behind her.

From the kitchen her mom yells, “BE READY IN FIVE MINUTES, I’M NOT KIDDING!”

Avalon sighs and shrugs it off. She grabs her toothbrush and quickly brushes her teeth, disregarding the smear of toothpaste on her cheek. She walks out of the bathroom and walks into the kitchen where her mom is waiting impatiently. Her mom starts tapping her foot, glares at her with her sharp blue eyes, and clutches onto her purse signifying she is late.

“Let's go,” Avalon’s mom rushes, “I don’t have the time.”

She never has the time. Avalon grabs her bag, throws on her beat up converse and heads to her mom’s old subaru. Her mom already started the car by the time Avalon slid into the passenger side of the car.

“What is going on with you?” Her mom asks. Avalon ignores her.

“Is it about dad?” Her mom asks as she speeds off to Avalons school.

Avalon flinches when her mom mentions him. Dad. That is what put her into such a depressive state. Avalon begins to feel her cheeks burn from the anger she has been building up. What kind of parent abandons their child especially at the age of 15. She clenches her fists, her nails digging deep into the palm of her hand. The pain eases her anger slightly. Avalon notices her mom glancing at her.

“WHAT!” Avalon screams. Tears begin to form in her eyes. Memories begin to flood into her mind, overwhelming her until she bursts out crying. Her mom reaches her hand out and pats Avalons thigh.

Her mom lets out a sigh. “We will talk about it when we are back home. Your dad loves you and you know he does.”

Avalon wipes her tears away and turns to the window and watches the trees pass by.
